  • An active stimulating method for juvenile fishes to drive escaping from mesh of the codend was examined by shaking canvas in the bottom trawl followed by shrimp beam trawl. Field fishing trials by a bottom trawl were carried out between the Geomoondo and Jejudo in west of South sea, Korea by conver-net methods to examine the effect on the reduction of juvenile fish as a discard catch by generating a shaking movement of the codend using two pieces of asymmetrical semi-circular canvas. The mean period of the shaking motion with the round canvas was 10-15 s, and the range of amplitude as a vertical depth change was up to 0.4-0.6 m when towing speed 3.4-4.3 k't as estimated by peak event analysis. The escape rate of juvenile fish in conver-net by total juvenile bycatch (codend and cover-net) in 14 trials increased from 20% in a steady codend to 34% using a shaking codend in the bottom trawl, while the marketing catch or total bycatch was similar between steady and shaking cod ends. There was no difference in the body size of the fish and species composition between the steady and shaking cod ends. Above results demonstrate a new method for bycatch reduction actually up to 18% using an active stimulating device, although further experiments are needed to increase an effective shaking motion of the codend in amplitude and period for more bycatch reduction.

  • Concentric annular heat pipes (CAHP) were fabricated and tested to investigate their thermal characteristics. The CAHPs were 25.4 mm in outer diameter and 200 mm in length. The inner surface of the heat pipes was covered with screen mesh wicks and they were connected by four bridge wicks to provide liquid return path. Three different heat pipes were fabricated to observe the effect of change in diameter ratios between 2.31 and 4.23 while using the same outer tube dimensions. The major concern of this study was the transient response as well as isothermal characteristics of the heat pipe outer surface, considering the application as uniform heating device. A better performance was achieved as the diameter ratio increased. For the thermal load of 180 W, the maximum temperature difference on the outer surface in the axial direction of CAHP was $2.3^{\circ}C$ while that of the copper block of the same outer dimension was $5.9^{\circ}C.$ The minimum thermal resistance of the CAHP was measured to be $0.004^{\circ}C/W.$ In regard to the transient response during start-up, the heat pipe showed almost no time lag to the heat source, while the copper block of the same outer dimensions exhibited about 25 min time lag.

  • CFD simulation is widely used in various industries, universities and research centers. In Korea most of the researchers use foreign commercial S/W packages especially in industries. But commercial CFD packages have some problems as limit to source code and very high license foe. So from several years ago open source CFD code has been widely spread as an alternative. But in Korea there are a few users of open source code. Insufficiency of performance validation as for accuracy, robustness, convenience and parallel speed-up is important obstacles of open source code. So we tested some validation cases as to incompressible external aerodynamics and internal flaws and now are doing compressible flaws. As the first stage of compressible flow validation, we simulated Korea next generation high speed train(HEMU). It's running condition is 400km/hr and maximum Mach number reaches up to 0.4. With the high speed train we tested accuracy, robustness and parallel performance of open source CFD code OpenFOAM Because there isn't experimental data we compared results with widely used commercial code. When use $1^{st}$ order upwind scheme aerodynamic forces are very similar to commercial code. But using $2^{nd}$ order upwind scheme there was some discrepancy. The reason of the difference is not clear yet. Mesh manipulation, domain decomposition, post-processing and robustness are satisfactory. Paralle lperformance is similar to commercial code.

  • Geochemical investigations on suspended amorphous iron oxide material from the Kwangyang gold mine and its surrounding area, Cheonnam, Korea have been carried out. The sediments samples were collected from 11 location along Kwangyang mine area and were air dried and sieved to -80 mesh. These samples consist mainly of iron, silicon and alumina. The Fe$_2$O$_3$ contents ranges from 17.9 wt.% to 72.3 wt.%. The content of Fe$_2$O$_3$ increase with decreasing Si, Al, Mg, Na, K, Mn, and Ti, whereas the contents of Te, Au, Ga, Bi, Cd, Hg, Sb, and Se increase in the amorphous stream sediments. Amorphous stream sediments have been severely enriched for As (up to 54.9 ppm), Bi (up to 3.77 ppm), Cd (up to 3.65 ppm), Hg (up to 64 ppm), Sb (up to 10.1 ppm), Cu (up to 37.1 ppm), Mo (up to 8.86 ppm), Pb (up to 9.45 ppm) and Zn (up to 29.7 ppm). At the upstream site, the Au content (up to 4.4 ppm) in the amorphous stream sediments are relatively high but those contents decrease with distance of mine location. The content of Ag (up to 0.24 ppm) were low in upstream site but those contents increase significantly in the downstream sites. The X-ray diffraction patterns of the samples have virtually no sharp and discrete peaks, indicating that some samples are amorphous or poorly-ordered. The quartz, goethite, kaolinite and illite were associated in amorphous stream sediments. The infrared spectra for amorphous stream sediments show major absorption bands due to OH stretching, adsorbed molecular water, sulfate and Fe-O stretching, respectively.

  • In a previous study, a set of polygon-mesh (PM)-based skin models including a $50-{\mu}m-thick$ radiosensitive target layer were constructed and used to calculate skin dose coefficients (DCs) for idealized external beams of electrons. The results showed that the calculated skin DCs were significantly different from the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) Publication 116 skin DCs calculated using voxel-type ICRP reference phantoms that do not include the thin target layer. The difference was as large as 7,700 times for electron energies less than 1 MeV, which raises a significant issue that should be addressed subsequently. In the present study, therefore, as an extension of the initial, previous study, skin DCs for three other particles (photons, protons, and helium ions) were calculated by using the PM-based skin models and the calculated values were compared with the ICRP-116 skin DCs. The analysis of our results showed that for the photon exposures, the calculated values were generally in good agreement with the ICRP-116 values. For the charged particles, by contrast, there was a significant difference between the PM-model-calculated skin DCs and the ICRP-116 values. Specifically, the ICRP-116 skin DCs were smaller than those calculated by the PM models-which is to say that they were under-estimated-by up to ~16 times for both protons and helium ions. These differences in skin dose also significantly affected the calculation of the effective dose (E) values, which is reasonable, considering that the skin dose is the major factor determining effective dose calculation for charged particles. The results of the current study generally show that the ICRP-116 DCs for skin dose and effective dose are not reliable for charged particles.

  • In recent years, the needs for more fuel-efficient and lower-emission vehicles have driven to use the alternative fuel of LPG(Liquefied Petroleum Gas) which is able to meet the more stringent legislations without many modifications to current engine. LPLi (Liquid Phase LPG Injection) system (the 3rd generation LPG injection system) is the core technology to produce power equivalent to a gasoline engine with less emissions. The LPG fuel pump can supply the compressed LP gas in the liquid phase to engine. The fuel filter is attached in the fuel pump to eliminate the remnants in the liquid phased LP gas and the performance of blowoff flow for a pump can be varied with various filters. In this study, experiments were conducted to investigate the performance and efficiency of the impeller type LPG fuel pump under various filter types of microfiber, double mesh and external filter. And blowoff flow for a LPG fuel pump was measured according to the temperature of the fuel.

  • The quantitative mechanics on the sideways walking of the crabs may provide a basic solution for entanglements of the walking legs in gillnets. The gaiting behaviour of the crabs on the flat board and the nettings 10, 16 and 23 mm in mesh size were experimented concerning about stepping positions and times in the laboratory using video set on July, 1984, It was found that the irregular movements of walking crabs in stepping positions and patterns were appeared on the nettings due to the absence of mechanical contact in spite of neural control of compensating, while on the flat surface evolved systematic leg movements. The mean stride length and walking velocity, which were increased with the carapace width on the flat board, as well as the step period and forward by backward stroke time were greater than those values on the netting, not associated with the carapace or the mesh size. Also, the step period and the Phase difference on the nettings revealed larger fluctuation than on the flat board. The joint angles of the walking legs, on the nettings in meropodite-carporodite and thorax-meropodite, which joint was varied especially up to below horizon because of the falling legs through the netting twine, were virtually wider than those on the flat substrate.

  • Nowadays computers can perform symbolic computations in addition to mere number crunching operations for which they were originally designed. Symbolic computation opens up exciting possibilities in Structural Mechanics and engineering. Classical areas have been increasingly neglected due to the advent of computers as well as general purpose finite element software. But now, classical analysis has reemerged as an attractive computer option due to the capabilities of symbolic computation. The repetitive cycles of simultaneous - equation sets required by the finite element technique can be eliminated by solving a single set in symbolic form, thus generating a truly closed-form solution. This consequently saves in data preparation, storage and execution time. The power of Symbolic computation is demonstrated by six examples by applying symbolic computation 1) to solve coupled shear wall 2) to generate beam element matrices 3) to find the natural frequency of a shear frame using transfer matrix method 4) to find the stresses of a plate subjected to in-plane loading using Levy's approach 5) to draw the influence surface for deflection of an isotropic plate simply supported on all sides 6) to get dynamic equilibrium equations from Lagrange equation. This paper also presents yet another computationally efficient and accurate numerical method which is based on the concept of derivative of a function expressed as a weighted linear sum of the function values at all the mesh points. Again this method is applied to solve the problems of 1) coupled shear wall 2) lateral buckling of thin-walled beams due to moment gradient 3) buckling of a column and 4) static and buckling analysis of circular plates of uniform or non-uniform thickness. The numerical results obtained are compared with those available in existing literature in order to verify their accuracy.

  • In P2P streaming management, peer's churning and finding efficient topology architecture optimization algorithm that reduces streaming delay is important. This paper studies a topology optimization algorithm based on the P2P streaming using peer's link information. The proposed algorithm is based on the estimation of peer's upload bandwidth using peer's link information on mesh-network. The existing algorithm that uses the information of connected links is efficient to reduce message overload in the point of resource management. But it has a risk of making unreliable topology not considering upload bandwidth. And when some network error occurs in a server-closer-peer, it may make the topology worse. In this paper we propose an algorithm that makes up for the weak point of the existing algorithm. We compare the existing algorithm with the proposed algorithm using test data and analyze each simulation result.

  • WiMedia provides the data rate of up to 1Gbps, but the transmission range is restricted to approximately 10 meters. When constructing a multi-hop WiMedia network to extend its coverage, conventional hop-based routing may not guarantee satisfactorily the required QoS. We propose two QoS routing techniques for the WiMedia-based wireless mesh network. The proopsed QoS routing reflects the characteristics of TDMA-based WiMedia MAC and develops QoS extensions separately for on-demand routing and table-driven routing. Through simulations, we identify that the QoS routing shows better performance than the hop-based routing. It also turns out that the QoS on-demand routing and the QoS table-driven routing show conflicting performance results depending on the transmission power.
