Objectives : Cupping therapy has been used as various treatment methods in oriental medicine clinic for a long time. Specially, Cupping stimulation caused skin hyperpigmentation which has been used as diagnosis method for extravasated blood & inner organs functional disease. But it was difficult to quantitatively measure and analyze the interrelation between extravasated blood and skin hyperpigmentation. The aim of this study is to measure the acupoint's RGB and melanin change pattern by stimulating under fixed 80kPa negative pressure and to evaluate the extravasated blood. Methods : To evaluate extravasated blood, 10 acupoints (left/right BL13, BL15, BL18, BL20, BL23) were stimulated by treatment 80kPa negative pressure for 1 minute. And then we measured the acupoints' skin color change patterns using the color meter, followed by RGB analysis and melanin change pattern. Results and Conclusions : We could observe the correlation of the acupoints' skin color condition related with RGB change pattern. All acupoints' color change degree were different. Regardless of acupoints' color degree due to extravasated blood, we observed in common the fact that RGB values decreased after stimulation and steadily increased according to time. We observed that melanin index increased after stimulation and recovered before stimulation-condition after the lapse of time. In other words, we confirmed the correlation between raised color change degree and $L^*a^*$ index change pattern. Therefore we observed the possibility of charting the $L^*a^*$ index following extravasated blood.
Clematis chinensis is the root of Clematis chinensis OSBECK and is classified in Ranunculaceae. Clematis chinensis is a traditional medicinal herb possesses analgesic, diuretic, anti-tumorigenic, and anti-inflammatory effects. In this study, the effect of aqueous extract of Clematis chinensis against lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation was investigated in mouse BV2 microglial cells. The aqueous extract of Clematis chinensis at the respective concentration was treated one hour before the lipopolysaccharide treatment in mouse BV2 microglial cells. From the present results, pre-treatment with the aqueous extract of Clematis chinensis suppressed prostaglandin E2 synthesis and nitric oxide production by inhibiting on the lipopolysaccharide-stimulated cyclooxygenase-2 and inducible nitric oxide synthase expressions in mouse BV2 microglial cells. The present study suggests that Clematis chinensis may offer a valuable mean of therapy for brain inflammatory diseases.

Objectives : This study aimed to investigate temperature characteristics by heat transfer type of therapeutic modalities. Methods : We selected heating and cooling modalities that are frequently used in clinical by heat transfer type: conduction, convection, radiation, and conversion. We used ham as tissue model, and applied the modalities for 30 minutes. We measured real-time changed temperature($^{\circ}C$) of the surface, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14 mm depth. Results : 1. In conduction-using hot pack, ice pack, and CryoStamp heating-cooling combination therapy unit($40^{\circ}C/{\sim}15^{\circ}C$), the surface temperature sharply rose close to equilibrium in first 5 minutes. 2. In convection-using smokeless moxa, temperature slowly rose to the maximum at 25-minute elapsed time. But in another convection-using CRAiS cryotherapy device, result was similar to that of conduction. 3. In radiation-using infrared lamp, result was similar to that of conduction, but not reached equilibrium during applying time. 4. In conversion-using ultrasound device, temperature was the highest at 6 mm depth, and not reached equilibrium during applying time. Conclusions : We could comprehend temperature characteristics and proper use of modalities by heat transfer type. It would be necessary to consider in vivo physical conditions in further studies.

Objective: In this study, the effects of Liriope Platyphylla against LPS-induced inflammation was investigated. Methods: Cell viability was determined using the MTT assay. To identify expressions of COX-2 and iNOS mRNA, RT-PCR was performed. Assessment of PGE2 synthesis was performed using the PGE2 immunoassay. Measurement of NO synthesis was performed using the NO detection. Result : The MTT assay revealed that Liriope Platyphylla exerted no significant cytotoxicity in the microglial BV2 cells. RT-PCR analysis revealed that the mRNA levels of COX-2 and iNOS were significantly decreased in the LPS- and 5 mg/ml Liriope Platyphylla treated group. From the PGE2 immunoassay and NO detection, PGE2 and NO synthesis was significantly suppressed in the LPS- and 5 mg/ml Liriope Platyphylla treated group. Conclusion : In these study, Liriope Platyphylla was shown to suppress PGE2 and NO production by inhibiting LPS-stimulated enhancement of COX-2 enzyme activity and iNOS expression. It is very possible that Liriope Platyphylla can offer a valuable mode of therapy for the treatment of brain inflammatory diseases.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate for rhinitis of middle school students and to confirm the effect of oriental medical treatments on rhinitis. We proceeded with this oriental medical treatment programs in collaboration with community health center. Methods : We have given oriental medical treatment, such as herbal medicines(pillet type Gamisinicheongpye-um and ointment) and intradermal acupuncture therapy at Hapgok (LI4), Yeonghyang (LI20), Indang, Bi-ik points, to patients for 9 weeks. Results of this treatment program were evaluated on a 4-point-scale depends on symptoms ; 'severe ()', 'moderate (++)', 'mild (+)' and 'no symptom (-)'. Results : After oriental medical treatments, rhinitis symptoms (sneezing, rhinorrhea, nasal obstruction, nasal itching and dysosmia) were improved significantly compared to before treatments (p<0.05). Conclusions : We confirmed rhinitis treated with oriental medicine should significant improvement and suggest that it is necessary to expand oriental medical treatment programs in collaboration with community health center.
Objective : In this study, we try to identify the herbal formulated by Heo Im from Kyeongheombang(經驗方), and investigate its medical property. Method : Those articles referenced from Heo Im's herbal formulas in "Sauikyeongheombang(四醫經驗方)" were extracted and results were quantitatively analyzed. From extracted empirical formulas, those categorized as externally applicable formulas were grouped by several standards and their medical significance was analyzed. Results and Conclusions : 85 and 66 articles were designated to be referred from Heo(許) in "Sauikyeongheombang" and "Uibanghapbu(醫方合部)" in each category, and 263 and 155 were identified to be Heo Im formulas, respectively. Externally applicable formulas in Heo Im's empirical recipes have following characteristics. First, various methods were used by Heo Im. Second, Heo Im's empirical formulas suggest useful clinical information maximizing therapeutic effect, which is of much value, originated from his practical experiences as a clinician. Third, Heo Im's therapy favorably succeeds the tradition of Hyangyak-medicine and Empirical -medicine. From this information, Heo Im is thought to have had rich insight and experience, not only in acupuncture but also in the prescription of herbal formulas at those days.
Objectives : Moxibustion therapeutics is one of the most popular oriental treatments in Korea. In this study, we operate the Telephone Survey for grasping clinical actual state moxibustion therapeutics in Korea. Methods : Survey questions were developed based on consensus of acupuncture professors. The list of the Korean medical doctors with experiences more than 10 years is provided by the Association of the Korean Oriental Medicine. It has been needed diagnosis technology of the EFG(Electro Functio Gram) measurement concept which is incorporated characteristic of modern science and biomedical engineering, because function abnormality diagnosis can't diagnose with visualization instruments or clinical pathology. The general diagnosis system(EFG system) has been developed to use basic diagnosis instrument that has reappearance, reliance and convenience using the functio diagnosis technology, in the field of western/oriental medicine. Also, we improved sticking electrode and simultaneous measurement method of the limbs 8CH, head 2CH to diagnose body circulation of Qi and acupoints for Oriental Medicine diagnosis/therapy. The result of clinical for adult man 20 persons, the EFG system can diagnose state of 12 meridians and autonomic nervous system. Therefore, in this paper, we designed of oriental medicine diagnosis system by bio-electric response with materialized H/W and S/W for 12 meridians state diagnosis of human body and system construction of the EFG.
This study describes the reliability of pragmatic combinations of acupuncture points for lateral epicondylalgia (LE) as prescribed by physiotherapists who were experts in acupuncture. Raters (n = 14; 33-59 years) independently prescribed acupuncture points for 30 simulated human patients with LE who were surveyed via a printed questionnaire. The frequency and cooccurrence of acupuncture points prescribed for patients with lateral epicondylitis were assessed. Absolute agreement and Light's kappa (${\kappa}_{Light}$) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to quantify the interrater agreement. Raters prescribed 103 unique acupuncture points in different combinations with a median (min-max) of 5 (0-11) acupuncture points. The most prescribed acupuncture point was LI-11 (297 of 420; 71%), and the most common cooccurring acupuncture points were LI-11 and LI-4 (160 of 420; 38%). The absolute agreement for prescribing the acupuncture points ranged from 70% (point GB-20) to 0% (points LI-10, SP-6, LI-11, GB-34, LI-12, and LI-4). Point LR-3 showed the highest interrater reliability for prescribing the acupuncture points [${\kappa}_{Light}=0.112$, 95% CI = (0.055-0.194)], whereas point LI-4 showed the lowest reliability [${\kappa}_{Light}=-0.003$, 95% CI = (-0.024 to 0.024)]. These findings suggest that pragmatic prescriptions of acupuncture points for LE are unreliable among physiotherapists who are experts in acupuncture. Explicit, high-level evidence-based rules for prescribing and teaching combinations of acupuncture points for LE are warranted.
