  • In this paper, the state-space representation of generalized complimentary filter is proposed. Complementary filter has the suitable structure to merge information from sensors whose frequency regions are complementary. First, the basic concept and structure of complementary filter is introduced. And then the structure of the generalized filter and its state-space representation are proposed. The state-space representation of complementary filter is able to design the complementary filter by applying modern filtering techniques like Kalman filter and $H_{\infty}$ filter. To show the usability of the proposed state-space representation, the design of Inertial Navigation System(INS) vertical channel damping loop using Global Positioning System(GPS) is described. The proposed GPS/INS damping loop lends the structure of Baro/INS(Barometer/INS) vertical channel damping loop that is an application of complementary filter. GPS altitude error has the non-stationary statistics although GPS offers navigation information which is insensitive to time and place. Therefore, $H_{\infty}$ filtering technique is selected for adding robustness to the loop. First, the state-space representation of GPS/INS damping loop is acquired. And next the weighted $H_{\infty}$ norm proposed in order to suitably consider characteristics of sensor errors is used for getting filter gains. Simulation results show that the proposed filter provides better performance than the conventional vertical channel loop design schemes even when error statistics are unknown.

  • Most work done in CSCW (Computer Supported Collaborative Work) system has been targeted toward supporting the exchange of documents or messages among group members, and yet support for cognitive aspects such as group organization, division and merge of work, and work flow control. The objective of the study is to provide CSCW environment for the engineering design process such as CAD (Computer Aided Design) and CASE (Computer Aided Software Engineering). The proposed DCWA (Distributed Collaborative Writing Aid) system suggests a mechanism that unifies the group organization, work division, and work flow control in the CAO, CASE, and software simulation tool. In particular, CAD relates the group and work partition by providing expressing the relation of drawing object (e.g., binding, attachment, and proportional scaling) which is owned by different members of group, and CASE combining with the simulation tool supports the flexibility of the work flow control. Simulating the prototype before manu-facturing a product can reduce time and cost in development.

  • Modeling and simulation of human-involved complex systems pose challenges to representing human decision makings into logical systems because of the nondeterministic and dynamic nature of human behaviors. In modeling perspectives, human's activities in systems can increase uncertainty and complexity, because he or she can potentially access all other resources within the system and change the system states. To address all of these human involvements in the system, this research suggests applying the Finite State Automata (FSA)-based formal modeling of human-involved systems that incorporates the ecological concept of affordances to an evacuation simulation, so that human behavioral patterns under urgent and dynamic emergency situations can be considered in the real-time simulation. The proposed simulation methodologies were interpreted using the warehouse fire evacuation simulation to clarify the applicability of the proposed methodology. This research is expected to merge system engineering technologies and human factors, and come out to the new predictive modeling methodology for disaster simulations. This research can be applied to a variety of applications such as building layout designs and building access control systems for emergency situations.

  • 3D spatial-modeling can be used in various safety-enhancement applications and for as-built data acquisition in project-control systems. The objective of the research reported herein was to provide spatial-modeling methods that represent construction sites in an efficient manner and to validate the proposed methods by testing them in an actual construction environment. Algorithms to construct construction-site scenes and to carry out coordinate transformations in order to merge data from different acquisition locations are presented. Field experiments were conducted to establish performance parameters and validation for the proposed methods and models. Initial experimental work has demonstrated the feasibility of this approach.

  • A dedicated reverse engineering(RE) system for rapid manufacturing of human head in a 3D bust has been developed. The first step in the process is to capture the surface details of a human head and shoulder by three scanners based upon the digital moire fringe technique. Then the multiple scans captured from different angles are aligned and merged into a single polygonal mesh, and the aligned data set is refined by smoothing, subdividing or hole filling process. Finally, the refined data set is sent to a 4-axis computer numerically control(NC) machine to manufacture a replica. In this paper, we mainly describe on the algorithms and software for aligning multiple data sets. The method is based on the recently popular Iterative Closest Point(ICP) algorithm that aligns different polygonal meshes into one common coordinate system. The ICP algorithm finds the nearest positions on one scan to a collection of points on the other scan by minimizing the collective distance between different scans. We also integrate some heuristics into the ICP to enhance the aligning process. A typical example is presented to validate the system and further research work is also discussed.

  • Existing coding aware routing algorithms focused on novel routing metric design that captures the characteristics of network coding. However, in packet coding algorithm, they use opportunistic coding scheme which didn't consider the queue state of the coding node and are equivalent to the conventional store-and-forward method in light traffic load condition because they never delay packets and there are no packets in the output queue of coding node, which results in no coding opportunity. In addition, most of the existing algorithms assume that all flows participating in the network have equal rate. This is unrealistic since multi-rate environments are often appeared. To overcome above problem and expand network coding to light traffic load scenarios, we present an enhanced coding-aware routing algorithm based on queue state and local topology (OQMCAR), which consider the queue state of coding node in packet coding algorithm where the control policy is of threshold-type. OQMCAR is a unified framework to merge single rate case and multiple rate case, including the light traffic load scenarios. Simulations results show that our scheme can achieve higher throughput and lower end-to-end delay than the current mechanisms using COPE-type opportunistic coding policy in different cases.

  • In this paper, the two-stage variable block-size multiresolution motion algorithm is proposed for an interframe coding scheme in the wavelet decomposition. An optimal bit allocagion between motion vectors and the prediction error in sense of minimizing the total bit rate is obtained by the proposed algorithm. The proposed algorithm consists of two stages for motion estimatation and only the first stage can be separated and run on its own. The first stage of the algorithm introduces a new method to give the lower bit rate of the displaced frame difference as well as a smooth motion field. In the second stage of the algorithm, the technique is introduced to have more accurate motion vectors in detailed areas, and to decrease the number of motion vectors in uniform areas. The algorithm aims at minimizin gthe total bit rate which is sum of the motion vectors and the displaced frame difference. The optimal bit allocation between motion vectors and displaced frame difference is accomplished by reducing the number of motion vectors in uniform areas and it is based on a botom-up construction of a quadtree. An entropy criterion aims at the control of merge operation. Simulation resuls show that the algorithm lends itself to the wavelet based image sequence coding and outperforms the conventional scheme by up to the maximum 0.28 bpp.

  • Due partly to lack of actual lane-changing data and partly to few studies on simulation functions to consider the lane-changing behavior, it may result in significant difference between simulation-based and real conditions. The objectives of this study are to estimate the set of mandatory lane-changing models and to analyze their features, depending on the merge control strategies under the lane-closed work zone operations. To achieve them, first, the elaborated calibration is required to simulate the mandatory lane-changing behaviors with the actual field data. Second, one can estimate their models with the logistic regression models, to obtain traffic variables as well as the lane-changing frequencies under the various levels of work zone traffic conditions. As a result, one can state that the well-calibrated simulation has the potential to properly reflect the target mandatory lane-changing behaviors. In addition, it should be mentioned that the set of proposed models is not practicable but preliminary result needed to identify the relations between the actual traffic conditions and lane-changing maneuvers and to develop their practical models for the actual applications.

  • Ramp metering control is the most representative strategy of uninterrupted flow control and management system. Ramp metering is to adjust vehicles entering an expressway in such a way that expressway mainline maintains flow stability by regulating ramp vehicles. The effect of two metering strategies, single-entry metering and platoon metering, on mainstream under the same metering rate with pre-timed metering are analyzed by micro-simulation. Platoon metering shows lower performance than single-entry metering under the same metering rate in terms of speed, density, and delay, causes earlier breakdown than single-entry metering. It indicates that the selection of metering type has critical importance as the flow of mainline is high.

  • An air traffic management (ATM) has been studied in a variety of fields to utilize an air traffic capacity efficiently and solve a congested air traffic situation due to an increment of an air traffic demand. In this paper, an air traffic management, which is related with controlling and determining the sequencing of an aircraft approaching to an airport, in terminal control area is studied. This paper focuses on scheduling algorithms with a given problem for the air traffic management with operational constraints, such as a space separation, an overtaking on the same air-route, and a route merge point (a scheduling point). For a real-time calculation, the presented algorithms focus on dispatching heuristic rules which are able to assign tasks in a fast time period with an adequate performance, which can be demonstrated as a proper and realistic scheduling algorithm. A simulation result is presented to illustrate the validity and applicability of the proposed algorithm. Each scheduling rule is analyzed on the same static and dynamic air traffic flow scenario with the ATM Monte-Carlo simulation.
