  • This study presents a mathematical modeling approach for developing models based on non-ideal conditions related to the membrane structure including porous supporting layer and deformation under pressure. Comparison of the findings with experimental data reveal the importance of considering the resistance in porous supporting layer though the effect of concentration polarization in the permeate stream could be neglected. Investigations on deformation of fibers under pressure ascertain that at larger fiber inner radius to outer radius ratios, increasing driving force may lead to an initial increase in permeability. After that, the effects of deformation dominates and thus permeability may be decreased.

  • Membrane structures, a kind of lightweight soft structural system, are used for spatial structures. The material property of the membrane has strong axial stiffness, but little bending stiffness. Therefore membrane structures arc unstable structures initially. These soft structures need to be introduced initial stresses first because of its initial unstable state, and it happens large deformation phenomenon. To find the structural shape after large deformation caused by initial stiffness introduced, we need the shape analysis considering geometric nonlinearity in structural design procedure. In this study, we investigate into the stress concentration at crack of membrane structures. Therefore, using the nonlinear analysis program that NASS (Nonlinear Analysis for Spatial Structures) perform nonlinear analysis, and stress distribution for creak length investigate for using linear elastic fracture mechanics.

  • The membrane type LNG(Liquefied Natural Gas) cargo containment system is a special design structure for the large deformation behavior at LNG temperature$(-162^{\circ}C)$. The design of membrane is required great confidence so that membrane can plat role in the tightness of flammable fluid storing. LNG cargo containment is loaded and unloaded LNG between twice and five times in a week. During this process, the membrane has large deformation behavior due to the variation of temperature and pressure to the self weight. In this study, the evaluation of the fatigue strength of membrane is very important to determine the design life of LNG storage tank and to evaluate the mechanical properties at the LNG temperature. Also, in the view point of large deformation, the evaluation method is applied conservatively $\epsilon-N_f$ curve of SUS 304L.

  • Both cylindrical cup drawing and square cup drawing are analyzed using membrane analysis as well as shell analysis by the elastic-plastic finite element method. An incremental formulation incorporating the effect of large deformation and normal anisotropy is used for the analysis of elastic-plastic non-steady deformation. The computed results are compared with the existing experimental results to show the validity of the analysis. Comparisons are made in the punch load and distribution of thickness strain between the membrane analysis and the shell analysis for both cylindrical and square cup drawing processes. In punch load, both analyses show very little difference and also show generally good agreement with the experiment. For the cylindrical cup deep drawing, the computed thickness strain of a membrane analysis, however, shows a wide difference with the experiment. In the shell analysis, the thickness strain shows good agrement with the experiment. For the square cup deep drawing, both membrane and shell analyses show a wide difference with experiment, this may be attributable to the ignorance of the shear deformation. Concludingly, it has been shown that the membrane approach shows a limitation for the deep drawing process in which the effect of bending is not negligible and more exact information on the thickness strain distribution is required.

  • The massive structures are not free to move with vibration, differential settlement, thermal stresses because, construction and expansion joint, crack etc., can be large enough to cause leakage as deformation of waterproofing. It has been depended on the test method of tensile/tear strength which is waterproofing performance as behavior of concrete structure crack. However, not to practically confirm the creep applied to concrete surface, even waterproofing membrane have more performance than definite strength and elasticity. Therefore, in this study will focus on the test method to consider a resistance performance about loose adhesion and deformation of waterproofing and behavior of concrete structure as construction/expansion joint, crack. Performance test method on the influence as behavior of concrete structure crack is to choose waterproofing materials and construction method which possible to confront with behavior of 50mm crack in the atmosphere and low temperature. Examine the deformation of waterproofing membrane and loose adhesion which can occur to structure in general job site, suggest standard testing method to analyze correlation waterproofing membrane and structure with 5-types of materials used in this study, such as Adhesion membrane and sheet complex, sheet and urethane complex, self-adhesive sheet, spray poly-urea, spray membrane of rubberized Asphalt.

  • Membrane penetration is the most important factor influencing the measurement of volume change for triaxial consolidated-drained shear test for coarse-grained soil. The effective pressure p, average particle size $d_{50}$, thickness $t_m$ and elastic modulus $E_m$ of membrane, contact area between membrane and soil $A_m$ as well as the initial void ratio e are the major factors influencing membrane penetration. According to the membrane deformation model given by Kramer and Sivaneswaran, an analytical solution of the membrane penetration considering the initial void ratio is deduced using the energy conservation law. The basic equations from theory of plates and shells and the elastic mechanics are employed during the derivation. To verify the presented solution, isotropic consolidation tests of a coarse-grained soil are performed by using the method of embedding different diameter of iron rods in the triaxial samples, and volume changes due to membrane penetration are obtained. The predictions from presented solution and previous analytical solutions are compared with the test results. It is found that the prediction from presented analytical solution agrees well with the test results.

  • In general, the design of membrane structures takes three steps. The first is shape finding analysis which is determination of initial equilibrium geometry with uniform stresses. The second step involve the computation of the stress-deformation to get completed membrane under various load conditions. The third step is to divide the membrane structures into several plan strips from the initial equilibrium states. This procedure is needed because of the initial shape has usually undevelopable curved surface and is called as "cutting patterns generation". By introducing this work, the deformation due to the initial stress is removed and approximate cutting patterns are generated. In this approach, however, material properties is not considered, therefore the error between the design stresses and actual stresses during the fabrication of plan strips should be occurred. In this paper, actual equilibrium shape analysis procedure for HP shape models is presented. The deviations of stresses between the design stresses and actual stresses are estimated.

  • This paper deals with piezoresistive humidity sensor using polycrystalline silicon (Poly-Si ) with membrane in sensors of semiconductor. Poly-Si piezoresistors which have no temperature dependancy are deposited on silicon wafer, membrane is formed with micromachining technology, then polyimide is formed as a hygroscopic layer. Whereas the principle of conventional humidify sensors are based on the change in electrical properties of the material, the humidity induced volume change of a polyimide layer leads to a deformation of a silicon membrane in this case. This deformation is transformed into an output voltage by Poly-Si piezoresistive. Wheatstone bridge. Fabricated piezoresistive humidity sensors showed good linearity, response time, and long term stability.

  • In this paper, numerical methods for wrinkle prediction of thin membrane were studied by finite element analysis. Techniques using membrane and shell elements were applied for triangular membrane. In case of membrane element method, the wrinkling was accounted for by the wrinkle algorithm of property modification, which was implemented to ABAQUS as a user subroutine. In case of shell method, geometrically nonlinear post-buckling analysis was performed to obtain the wrinkle deformation explicitly. The wrinkling deformation was induced by seeding the mesh with a random geometric imperfection. The results were investigated focusing on the mesh convergence and the solution accuracy.
