  • Water has the melting point, the boiling point, the heat of fusion, and the heat of vaporization all much higher than would be normally expected from the hydrogen compounds of the other members of the oxygen family. Another unique characteristic of ice-Ⅰ is its volume decrease which takes place in its melting. A number of significant efforts have been made in the past to explain these properties quantitatively. The authors, reasoning from the unusually great free surface energy of water and the characteristic volume change on melting, propose the structural model of liquid water as follows. On melting, fluidized vacancies of a molecular size are introduced. Thereupon, for the unusually great surface energy density, molecules surrounding the vacancies become to have close packed arrangement. But molecules not in direct contact with vacancies should still possess the original structure i. e., ice-Ⅰ. When a molecule adjacent to a vacancy jumps into the vacancy, the molecule attains the gaslike degree of freedom. Using the above model, the authors had developed the liquid partition function of water by applying the theory of significant structures in liquids. Molar volume, vapor pressure, entropy of fusion and entropy of vaporization were calculated over a wide temperature range. The results show good agreement with experimental observations.

  • This article reports the results of scientific analysis using SEM-EDX, XRD, TG/DTA, performed on 5 green glaze samples of the brick and roofing tile excavated from the Sacheonwang temple site in Gyeongju in order to verify the chemical compositions and melting temperature. The glaze samples on 2 clay statues have similar chemical composition (PbO 74~81%, $SiO_2$ 14~18%) and melting temperature range ($970{\sim}1070^{\circ}C$), whereas the 2 tiles of goblin's face and 1 rhomb brick have different characteristics. Sample SC 003 (made of PbO 63~67%, $SiO_2$ 25~28%), one of the tiles of goblin's face, shows low melting temperature range (below $970^{\circ}C$), and sample SC 004 (composed of PbO 64~70%, $SiO_2$ 19~25% and melting point $970{\sim}1070^{\circ}C$), the other tile of goblin's face, shows different chemical characteristics compared with 2 clay statues. The green glaze on rhomb brick shows different composition compared with all the others from Sacheonwang temple site in that it does not show any impurity elements other than the main components (PbO 87~88%, $SiO_2$ 12~13%) with very low melting temperature range ($750{\sim}770^{\circ}C$). Surprizingly, the chemical and optical characteristics of this green-glaze on rhomb brick are very similar to that on the bricks from Yeongmyo temple site, Gyeongju. The above results indicate that raw material and manufacturing method are not same for 5 green-glaze samples from Sacheonwang temple site and therefore suggests that further study on the provenance of raw material such as lead isotope analysis is necessary. Our work will provide basic data for future reproduction study of green glazed brick of Sacheonwang temple site, Gyeongju and will also serve as a reference data for the study of raw material and manufacturing method of green glaze from other sites of cultural assets.

  • Bismuth and Indium added Sn-Cu-Ni solder alloy was investigated for a new lead free solder. The thermal, electrical and mechanical properties were characterized for the Sn-0.7%(Cu+Ni) solder alloy by adding 2~5% Bi and 2~ 10% In. The melting point of solder alloy was in range of 200 to $222^{\circ}C$ and the mushy zone was in range of 20 to $37^{\circ}C$. This alloys could be adapted to middle and high temperature solder materials. A new solder alloy composition. Sn-0.7%(Cu+Ni) -3.5%Bi-2%In is very promising with high performance and effective cost. The melting point was $220^{\circ}C$, the mushy zone range was $25^{\circ}C$, and mechanical, electrical and wetting properties were competitive with those of other lead-free solder except the lower elongation value.

  • Melting slag generated from the lots of municipal incineration ash, which causes the one of big urban problems in modern industrial society, was used as starting material for the hydrothermal synthesis of zeolite. P-type zeolite has been successfully synthesized by the combined process of both 'hydrogelation' and 'clay conversion' method. Commercial sodium silicate was used as Si source, and $NaAlO_2$ was prepared by the reaction in a $Na_{2}O/Al_{2}O_{3}$ molar ratio of 1.2. The optimum conditions for zeolite synthesis was found to be the $SiO_{2}/Al_{2}O_{3}$ ratio in the 3.2 and 4.2 range, the $H_{2}O/Na_{2}O$ ratio in the 70.7 and 80.0 range, and more than 15-hour reaction time at $80^{\circ}C$, In the synthesized zeolite, inhomogeneous melting slag particles were disappeared and homogeneous P-type zeolite crystal was grown. The cation exchange capacity of the synthesized zeolite was determined to be approx. 240 cmol/kg.

  • The densification behavior during a sintering of M2 and T15 grade high speed steel powder compacts was reported. Sintered densities over 98% theoretical were achieved by a liquid phase sintering in vacuum for both grades. The optimum sintering temperature range where full densification could be achieved without excessive carbide coarsening and incipient melting was much narrower in M2 than in T15 grade. The sintering response was mainly affected by the type of carbides present. The primary carbides in M2 were identified as $M_6C$ type whereas those in T15 were MC type which provides wider sintering range. The addition of elemental carbon up to 0.3% lowered the optimum sintering temperature for both grades, but had little effect on expanding the sintering range and sintered structure.

  • Binary skutterudite $CoSb_3$ compounds were prepared by the arc melting and hot pressing processes and their thermoelectric properties were investigated in the range from 300 to 600 K. Annealing effect was correlated to phase transformation and homogenization. Thermoelectric properties of the arc-melted and hot-pressed $CoSb_3$ were discussed and compared. Undoped intrinsic $CoSb_3$ prepared by the arc melting showed p-type conduction, while it showed metallic behavior with increasing measuring temperature. However, hot pressed specimens showed n-type conduction, possibly due to Sb evaporation. Thermoelectric properties were remarkably improved by annealing In vacuum and they were closely related to phase transformation.

  • The steady state close-contact melting phenomenon occurring between a phase change material and an isothermally heated flat plate with relative motion is investigated analytically, in which the effects of vertical convection in the liquid film and solid-liquid density difference are incorporated simultaneously. Not only the scale analysis is conducted to estimate a priori qualitative dependence of system variables on characteristic parameters, but also an analytical solution to a set of simplified model equations is obtained to specify the effects under consideration. These two results are consistent with each other, in that the vertical convection affects both the solid descending velocity and the film thickness, and that the density difference alters only the solid descending velocity. While the effect of vertical convection can be characterized conveniently by a newly introduced temperature gradient factor which asymptotically approaches the unity/zero with decreasing/increasing the Stefan number, that of density difference is represented by the liquid-to-solid density ratio. It is shown that the solid descending velocity depends linearly on the density ratio, and that the ratios of solid descending velocity, film thickness and friction coefficient to the conduction solution are proportional to 3/4, 1/4 and -1/4 powers of the temperature gradient factor, respectively. Also, established is the fact that the effect of convection can be legitimately neglected in the analysis for the range of the Stefan number less than 0.1.

  • In this study, a shape-stabilized phase change material (SSPCM) was prepared by octadecane and exfoliated graphite nanoplate (xGnP) in a vacuum, to improve thermal storage performance. The octadecane as an organic phase change material (PCM) is very stable against phase separation of PCM, and has the proper temperature range for thermal comfort in the building; and the xGnP is a porous carbon nano-material. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier transformation infrared spectrophotometer (FT-IR) were used to confirm the chemical and physical stability of the Ocatadecane/xGnP SSPCM. In addition, thermal properties were determined by Deferential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The specific heat of Octadecane/xGnP SSPCM was $14.1J/g{\cdot}K$ at $31.3^{\circ}C$. The melting temperature ranges of melting and freezing were found to be $26{\sim}35^{\circ}C$ and $26{\sim}19^{\circ}C$, respectively. At this time, the latent heats of melting and freezing were 110.9 J/g and 104.5 J/g, respectively. The Octadecane was impregnated into xGnP by as much as about 56.0% of the Octadecane/xGnP SSPCM's mass fraction.

  • Thermal properties of amylose-lysolecithin (AL) complex, amylose content and effect of lysolecithin on the gelatinization of rice starch were investigated by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The melting temperature of AL complex was near to $108.5^{\circ}C$ and the melting enthalpy was about 1.0cal/g. The gelatinization temperature of rice starch was not affected by adding lysolecithin. However, the enthalpy of gelatinization was decreased. The amylose contents in rice varieties were calculated from melting enthalpy of AL complex. The amylose contents for Indica and Japonica types of rice were in the range of 16-19%, which were in good agreement with those determined by iodine binding method. Significant differences were not observed in the amylose contents between Indica and Japonica varieties.
