As music of digital form has been widely used, many people have been interested in the automatic extraction of natural information of music itself, such as key of a music, chord progression, melody progression, tempo, etc. Although some studies have been tried, consistent and reliable results of musical information extraction had not been achieved. In this paper, we propose a method to extract chord and tempo information from general polyphonic music signals. Chord can be expressed by combination of some musical notes and those notes also consist of some frequency components individually. Thus, it is necessary to analyze the frequency components included in musical signal for the extraction of chord information. In this study, we utilize a sinusoidal modeling, which uses sinusoids corresponding to frequencies of musical tones, and show reliable chord extraction results of sinusoidal modeling. We could also find that the tempo of music, which is the one of remarkable feature of music signal, interactively supports the chord extraction idea, if used together. The proposed scheme of musical feature extraction is able to be used in many application fields, such as digital music services using queries of musical features, the operation of music database, and music players mounting chord displaying function, etc.

This study presents five selection rules for training algorithms to extract audio sources from noise. The five rules are Dynamics, Roots, Tonal Balance, Tonal-Noisy Balance, and Stereo Width, and the suitability of each rule for sound extraction was determined by spectrogram analysis using various types of sample sources, such as environmental sounds, musical instruments, human voice, as well as white, brown, and pink noise with sine waves. The training area of the algorithm includes both melody and beat, and with these rules, the algorithm is able to analyze which specific audio sources are contained in the given noise and extract them. The results of this study are expected to improve the accuracy of the algorithm in audio source extraction and enable automated sound clip selection, which will provide a new methodology for sound processing and audio source generation using noise.
This paper describes a music information retrieval system which uses humming as the key for retrieval Humming is an easy way for the user to input a melody. However, there are several problems with humming that degrade the retrieval of information. One problem is a human factor. Sometimes people do not sing accurately, especially if they are inexperienced or unaccompanied. Another problem arises from signal processing. Therefore, a music information retrieval method should be sufficiently robust to surmount various humming errors and signal processing problems. A retrieval system has to extract pitch from the user's humming. However pitch extraction is not perfect. It often captures half or double pitches. even if the extraction algorithms take the continuity of the pitch into account. Considering these problems. we propose a system that takes multiple pitch candidates into account. In addition to the frequencies of the pitch candidates. the confidence measures obtained from their powers are taken into consideration as well. We also propose the use of an algorithm with three dimensions that is an extension of the conventional DP algorithm, so that multiple pitch candidates can be treated. Moreover in the proposed algorithm. DP paths are changed dynamically to take deltaPitches and IOIratios of input and reference notes into account in order to treat notes being split or unified. We carried out an evaluation experiment to compare the proposed system with a conventional system. From the experiment. the proposed method gave better retrieval performance than the conventional system.

This paper proposes a MIDI- and audio-based music genre classification method for Korean traditional music. There are many traditional instruments in Korea, and most of the traditional songs played using the instruments have similar patterns and rhythms. Although music information processing such as music genre classification and audio melody extraction have been studied, most studies have focused on pop, jazz, rock, and other universal genres. There are few studies on Korean traditional music because of the lack of datasets. This paper analyzes raw audio and MIDI phrases in Korean traditional music, performed using Korean traditional musical instruments. The classified samples and MIDI, based on our classification system, will be used to construct a database or to implement our Kontakt-based instrument library. Thus, we can construct a management system for a Korean traditional music library using this classification system. Appropriate feature sets for raw audio and MIDI phrases are proposed and the classification results-based on machine learning algorithms such as support vector machine, multi-layer perception, decision tree, and random forest-are outlined in this paper.
The recent growth of a digital music market induces increasing demands for music searching and recommendation services. In order to improve the performance of music-based application services, the process of extracting melodies from polyphonic music is essential. In this paper, we propose a method to extract melodies from piano solo music which is highly polyphonic and has a wide pitch range. We categorize piano music into three classes taking into account the characteristics of music, and extract melodies according to each class. The performance evaluation for the implemented system showed that our method works successfully on a variety of piano solo music.

In this paper, we propose a new model for the conditional generation of music, considering key and rhythm, fundamental elements of music. MIDI sheet music is converted into a WAV format, which is then transformed into a Mel Spectrogram using the Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT). Using this information, key and rhythm details are classified by passing through two Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), and this information is again fed into the Music Transformer. The key and rhythm details are combined by differentially multiplying the weights and the embedding vectors of the MIDI events. Several experiments are conducted, including a process for determining the optimal weights. This research represents a new effort to integrate essential elements into music generation and explains the detailed structure and operating principles of the model, verifying its effects and potentials through experiments. In this study, the accuracy for rhythm classification reached 94.7%, the accuracy for key classification reached 92.1%, and the Negative Likelihood based on the weights of the embedding vector resulted in 3.01.
Recently, the study of efficient way to store and retrieve enormous music data is becoming the one of important issues in the multimedia database. Most general method of MIR (Music Information Retrieval) includes a text-based approach using text information to search a desired music. However, if users did not remember the keyword about the music, it can not give them correct answers. Moreover, since these types of systems are implemented only for exact matching between the query and music data, it can not mine any information on similar music data. Thus, these systems are inappropriate to achieve similarity matching of music data. In order to solve the problem, we propose an Efficient Query-By-Humming System (EQBHS) with a content-based indexing method that efficiently retrieve and store music when a user inquires with his incorrect humming. For the purpose of accelerating query processing in EQBHS, we design indices for significant melodies, which are 1) frequent melodies occurring many times in a single music, on the assumption that users are to hum what they can easily remember and 2) melodies partitioned by rests. In addition, we propose an error tolerated mapping method from a note to a character to make searching efficient, and the frequent melody extraction algorithm. We verified the assumption for frequent melodies by making up questions and compared the performance of the proposed EQBHS with N-gram by executing various experiments with a number of music data.
In some previous works on musical genre classification, human experts specify segments of a song for extracting musical features. Although this approach might contribute to performance enhancement, it requires manual intervention and thus can not be easily applied to new incoming songs. To extract musical features without the manual intervention, most of recent researches on music genre classification extract features from a pre-determined part of a song (for example, 30 seconds after initial 30 seconds), which may cause loss of accuracy. In this paper, in order to alleviate the accuracy problem, we propose a new method, which extracts features from representative segments (or main theme part) identified by structure analysis of music piece. The proposed method detects segments with repeated melody in a song and selects representative ones among them by considering their positions and energies. Experimental results show that the proposed method significantly improve the accuracy compared to the approach using a pre-determined part.
