The Study of Literature on Moxa Treatment of Melancholia (우울증(憂鬱症)의 구치료(灸治療)에 관(關)한 문헌적(文獻的) 고찰(考察))

  • Objective : This study was undertaken to review the moxa treatment of melancholia. Method : We referred to records from ancient to modern. Results : The results of this study were obtained as follows ; 1. It reveals that the common symptoms of melancholia shows chronic weakness and coldness generally, and moxibustion is effective for making body warm. 2. It reveals that HT8(少府), LR1(大敦), PC7(大陵), ST36(足三里) are used much for the treatment of melancholia, and the common characters of the above points are freshing mind, refreshing chest, controlling digestive energy etc. 3. It reveals that pericardium meridian, liver meridian, heart meridian are used much in moxa treatment of melancholia. Conclusion : These results indicate that moxa treatment is effective to treatment of melancholia.

Pathogenicities of Entomopathogenic Fungus, Metarhizium anisopliae J-22 against Turfgrass and Some Agro-forest Insect Pests (골프장 잔디 및 농림해충 수종에 대한 곤충병원성 곰팡이 Metarhizium anisopliae J-22의 병원성)

  • Biological control of turfgrass insect pest Blitopertha orientalis, forest insect pests, Agelastica coerulea, Meganola melancholia, and Glyphodes perspectalis,vegetable insect pests, Plutella xylostella and Agrotis segetum were conducted with entonopathogenic fungus, Metarhizium anisopliae J-22 isolated from black pine forest soil in Cheju province. Mortality of B. orientalis larvae was 53.3% at the rate of 3.4 $\times$ 1O 7 conidia /ml. A. coerulea and M melancholia larvae showed 100% mortalities at 9.6 $\times$ 106 conidia /ml and 2.7 $\times$ 10 7 conidia /ml as well. However, G. perspectalis larvae were not dead even at 4$\times$ 1O 7 conidia /ml. On the other hand, M anisopliae J-22 was effective against P. xylostella larvae showing 100% mortality at 4 $\times$ 10 7 conidia /ml.   • This case is about the patient who has experienced available effect as a result of executing the treatment of physical constitution after deteriorating by symptoms being R/O because of side effects by Western medicine during the treatment by Western medicine after having diagnosis of melancholia. In the beginning of being clouded consciousness, it has paralleled the treatment by Oriental medicine and Western medicine. After restoration of consciousness the treatment by Oriental medicine was only executed. As a result of that, the initial symptoms and the existing melancholia have gotten better, and then it presented that the normal daily life would be available. We could examine that the treatment of physical constitution had available effect against melancholia. And it needs to widen it to the disorder of psychoneurosis hereafter. Also it showed that it needs systematic clinical research.

  • Depression is an important medical problem in today's world. Despite its high prevalence, treatment of depression remains problematic, as its cause is still not fully understood. Of the ways recommended to tackle this problem is implementing the potentials of various medical schools. A medical school which has played an important role in the history of medicine in the world is Persian medicine. This study was intended to identify non-pharmacological interventions for depression in the most reliable references on Persian medicine, classify these interventions and compare them with the latest medical findings. The study was set to review the most reliable references on Persian medicine. In addition, relevant keywords were used to search the PubMed and Scopus databases. In Persian medicine sources, melancholia is categorized into three main types. One type is regarded as cerebral melancholia, which resembles modern psychiatry's depression closely. Therefore, some key points put forth by Persian medicine scholars regarding melancholia can be used to answer questions concerning depressive disorders and their etiology and treatment. Although recent studies have confirmed most approaches offered by Persian medicine physicians in ancient Persia, it is imperative to design and conduct clinical trial studies according to these approaches.

  • This study approaches the novel from psychodynamic perspectives, where the narrative is woven into the strands of traumatic memories and past. Deriving from Julia Kristeva's discussion on melancholia, this paper discreetly examines Hata as a melancholic, who is unaware of what he has lost and even that he has lost. Racially abject but in defiance of his separation from 'the mother,' Hata introjects loss as his own subjectivity. The insoluble void causes him to wander through the bravado of belongingness, which he eventually transforms into Sublimation. This paper reads that Hata finally faces his own black sun, deviating from his earlier gesture life; thus, the novel becomes a successful case study of the melancholic. However, female bodies are at stake, subsumed under Hata's sexual perversion. The novel renders trauma behind the fragmented narrative of an Asian American man at the expense of consuming morbid 'feminine' bodies physically and psychologically.

Sentimentalism of Melancholia and Death -Kwak Ji-kyun's Melodrama Films, New Sentimentalism, and The Home of Two Women (우울과 죽음의 센티멘털리즘 -곽지균의 멜로드라마 영화와 뉴 센티멘털리즘, 그리고 <두 여자의 집>)

  • This paper examines how the melancholia and death drive foregrounded in Kwak Ji-kyun's films have changed the affect and production trend of South Korean melodrama films of the late 1980s and thereafter. It particularly analyzes Kwak's The Home of Two Women (1987) as his exemplary melodrama film. Kwak is not only an auteur filmmaker of the 1980s and 1990s but was also a herald of South Korean New Sentimentalist films back then. The New Sentimentalist filmmakers have aspired to sophisticate the South Korean melodrama film not only by de-sentimentalizing it from the shimpa quality but also separating it from excessive emotion of shimpa that had long dominated the national cinema. This affective sophistication is directly linked to the sense of loss and melancholia/depression of the characters in the film caused by the death of one's beloved. This New Sentimentalist affect is best represented in Kwak's The Home of Two Women through its depiction of the internal conflicts of artists struggling to artistically sublimate the death drive and sense of loss. By textually analyzing The Home of Two Women, this paper not only reevaluates Kwak's film style but also reposition the topology of the New Sentimentalists in Korean film history.

Freud's and Derrida's Theories of Mourning: "I Mourn Therefore I Am" (프로이트와 데리다의 애도이론 -"나는 애도한다 따라서 나는 존재한다.")

  • This study compares and contrasts Freud's "work of mourning" which mostly appears in his memorable essay "Mourning and Melancholia" and Derrida's theory of mourning which appears in various works such as MEMOIRES for Paul de Man, The Work of Mourning, and others. Freud maintains that the mourner begins to sever emotional ties to the lost object through a labor of memory and eventually completes the work of mourning. It is a "testing of reality" that motivates the mourner to begin to relinquish emotional attachment to the lost object. Derrida, however, challenges Freudian work of mourning by saying that true mourning lies in "respecting the Otherness of the Other." Derrida suggests that Freud's "normal work of mourning" is "unjust betrayal" of the lost object because it "kills" and "devours" the other and thereby makes it part of the self. So he proposes that work of mourning has "to fail in order to succeed": "success fails" and "failure succeeds." There is an enormous, even epistemological, chasm between Freud who states that mourning, "however painful it may be, comes to a spontaneous end" and Derrida who states that "mourning is interminable. Inconsolable. Irreconcilable." and "I mourn Therefore I am." The former is the voice of "testing of reality" and common sense whereas the latter is that of utopian ethical vision. Yet neither seems to get the upper hand and they are kind of forced to maintain an ongoing dialogue with each other, for true mourning seems to lie somewhere in between.

A Study about physical awareness symptoms of workers working at Seoul driver-owned taxi workplace by THI and CMI (CMI와 THI에 의한 서울시내 개인택시 사업장에 근무하는 근로자의 신체적 자각증상에 관한 연구)

  • This paper investigated Taxi drivers physical subjective symptoms and what factors were interviewed caused the symptoms. The 600 owning taxi-drivers in Seoul during four months from August 1st, 2003 to November 30th, 2003. 1. The average age of the owning taxi-drivers was generally quite high 54 years old. It was very high index compared with the Todai Health Index(THI) and Cornell Medical Index(CMI) of health check tables. 2. According to the age in THI health check table, the complains of mental subjective symptom by reason of age was high among 31 to 40 years old. People who belonged that age group showed high fabrication(L), digestion(C) and aggressiveness(F). The results showed the complains of mental subjective symptom. All items except tiredness(I), melancholia(N), and hypersensitivity(P) were commonly reported by people in their sixties. On the other hand, melancholia(N) and hypersensitivity(P), people in their forties were investigated highly. Statistically, the items of heartㆍblood stream(C) and digestion(D) systems were similar between the two ages, but anger(Q) was different. (p<0.05) 3. From the complains of mental and physical subjective symptoms about work satisfaction on the THI health check table, all items except eyeㆍskin trouble(B) showed strong dissatisfaction. From the complains of mental and physical subjective symptoms about work satisfaction on the CMI health check table, the items of respiratory system(B), digestion(D), nervous system(G), miscellaneous(K), inadequancy(M), and anger(Q) showed similar results. Otherwise, heartㆍblood stream(C) showed statistically different. 4. From the complains of mental and physical subjective symptoms on salary satisfaction in the THI health check table, in the case of people receiving around 1 million won, the complains of physical symptoms showed high among all items except for the respiratory(A) and digestion(C) systems. The eyeㆍskin trouble(B) item showed statistical similarity. The complains of mental and physical subjective symptoms according to a salary degree on the CMI health check table was completely different from the above results. In people received around 1~1.5million won, all items except anxiety(O) showed high. The hypersensitivity(P) item showed statistically different.

  • This research recognized about general ancient temple of Alzheimer dementia. Research of cause of Alzheimer dementia is progressing up to now. Age, education, melancholia, estrogen, woman, smoking, thyroid gland disease, aluminum etc. are danger factor of an Alzheimer dementia. Familyish factor was proved in some degree by gene. Medicine in early patient's case imbecility some measure progress late in degree develop. However, ceilinged thing is true in treatment of Alzheimer dementia up to now, and must help so that their quality of life may can rise and laws of physical therapist must help to keep function in everyday life.

Eros, Seduction for Redemption (에로스, 구원을 위한 유혹)

  • The paper was inspired by Jung's words in the Red Book "just as Christ tormented the flesh through the spirit, the God of this time will torment the spirit through the flesh." I propose that the new form of torment in this era could be eroticism as a way of the individuation process because it seems to be one of a very few ways left to modern men to grasp the sense of permanence, the essence of the divine, without religion because of its peculiar nature of transcendence. I suppose that it is not only a man who is tortured but also god is in torment since the divine needs a man as a womb for his incarnation. Therefore I suggest that man and god are fated to seduce each other to be redeemed by each other. I imagine that Eros with numinous sexuality seduces a man who has potentials for the god's incarnation and who would be willing to give in to the god's demand. This god needs a man who desires his essence of perpetuity, the eternal water of life, in ecstasy. Thus the purpose of the divine's seduction is to make a man awake from unconsciousness to pursue god himself, namely the individuation process. I call such divine seduction "eroticism of god" There seem to be a certain type of people who are destined to live eroticism as a way of individuation process. Through investigations, a melancholic tendency appears to be suitable for this type of individuation. Melancholia is deeply related to the poignant awareness of impermanence as the existential condition, which is a precondition for seeking permanence through eroticism. Melancholia essentially causes deep longing for eternity that bears fulfillment, which exists in eroticism, so melancholic agony seems inevitable for eroticism as the path for individuation in that, without knowing about deficiency, we never seek what is lacking in us. It can also be viewed that while a lover is driven to seduce lost love, what actually waits to become seduced for redemption is the god of love itself behind the human beloved. Man and god are fated to seduce each other for redemption. I suppose that the initiation to Eros implies how to seduce Eros. In a woman's psyche, psychological virginity is one of the essential qualities that her ego needs to attain. To the male it is vital to live his sensuality thoroughly and to experience his own and his lover's emotions to their limit. It cannot be an easy task because it demands us to give up our egotism entirely. Through eroticism, unconsciousness seduces us to make us live life as a whole. The god of love brings powerful sexuality as a means of "spiritual crisis" to redeem our lukewarm soul. Only a few can withstand the experience since it requires a strong will to bear the brunt of the sword despite the keen awareness that it may leave us bleeding in pain.
