Development of the Business Survey Index Evaluation Model for Overseas Construction Companies (해외건설 진출기업을 위한 기업경기실사지수 평가모델 개발)

  • Domestic construction companies have difficulty in establishing strategies when entering overseas markets because they do not have an overseas construction economic sentiment index to refer to for data on overseas construction prospects. Considering that the fluctuation of overseas construction orders over the past decade has been substantial and large companies and SMEs are actively advancing overseas, this study developed an evaluation model for an overseas construction business sentiment index to grasp the economic experience of overseas construction companies. In 2021 Korean companies earned 30.6 billion in overseas construction contracts, 87% the level of the previous year, despite difficulties such as COVID-19 and low oil prices, thanks to efforts by construction companies to strengthen their strategies for entry, such as regional diversification, and government support for winning orders. Since the overseas construction industry fluctuates greatly due to changes in the international environment, it is necessary to investigate and analyze the economic sentiment index of overseas construction companies. In particular, despite the increase in overseas expansion of small and medium-sized construction companies and engineering companies, the provision of information on the overseas construction market sentiment index is insufficient, limiting the establishment of strategies for overseas construction expansion. Therefore, this study intends to develop an overseas construction market sentiment index model that can understand the economic sentiment of overseas construction companies, provide a forecast for overseas construction, and use it to establish overseas construction strategies and policies.

The Effects of Technological Capability and Domestic Marketing Capability on Export Market Orientation, and Moderating Effect of Market Turbulence: Evidence from SMEs in Gwangju and Jeonnam Province (기술역량과 국내 마케팅역량이 수출지향성에 미치는 영향과 시장변동성의 조절효과: 광주·전남지역 중소기업에 대한 실증분석을 중심으로)

  • This study examines the effects of technological capability and domestic marketing capability of SMEs on the export market orientation, focusing on the moderating effect of market turbulence. This empirical analysis, based on surveys collected from 206 small and medium-sized firms located in Gwangju and Jeonnam provinces, yielded the following conclusions. First, technological capability of SMEs has a positive impact on export market orientation. This result not only is consistent with preceding studies but also suggests that when technological capability of SMEs is utilized as their own unique asset to reduce liability of smallness or liability of foreignness, the tendency to export might be increased. Second, domestic marketing capability of SMEs has a positive impact on export market orientation. This result suggests that as the domestic marketing capability of SMEs is used as prior knowledge reducing uncertainty to enter the overseas markets, the tendency to export might be increased. Third, as a result of examining moderating effect of market turbulence, it shows that market turbulence moderates the relationship between domestic marketing capability and export market orientation toward a negative(-) direction. That is, since market turbulence might weaken the relationship between domestic marketing capability and export market orientation, SMEs which belong to the industry considering marketing capability important need to develop strategy with consideration for market turbulence. This study provides theoretical and practical implications in that it reveals factors positively affecting export market orientation and market turbulence can be utilized as a moderator.

  • This study starts from interests on an endeavor of each economy unit, especially the enterprises, for the survival and sustainability of themselves. Competition, how to get it, maintain it and advance it! Agreeing the perceivedness of industries, scholars and public; what the core competition of manufacturer is an competitiveness of product, this study focuses on the PLM system as the key solution for obtaining the competitiveness of product with reviewing the contents and studies of PLM formulated. PLM is highlighted as the one of top tier ICT solution for the product development domain of manufacturing industry today. First of all, this study deals with the opinion of actual work-site and management of our small&medium business for the benefits of PLM based on product development; the impact on the performances of management, which is the key objective of the existence of enterprises. In conclusion, the answers for these questionnaires shows positive perception of actual work-sites and managers for the PLM system. They agree some useful effects on shortening the term and downsizing the cost of product development due to Data integration and Process management, even if they have not full confidence on the effectiveness of the individual functionality of the PLM system.

  • The public construction industry in Korea involves a variety of stakeholders, encompassing multiple layers of contractual relationships that crisscross between the State as project client and the contractors, as well as subcontractors. In such a hierarchical landscape, managerial crises of contractors involving bankruptcy or insolvency can result in unexpected damages for both clients and subcontractors. Accordingly, the applicable legal framework requires project clients to act as patrons in relation to making payments to subcontractors, and stipulates provisions pertaining to direct payments to subcontractors in order to promote the balanced development of the national economy in terms of the public interest by protecting small and medium-sized businesses working as subcontractors for large businesses. However, the relevant legal documents provide for different payment criteria and procedures from document to document, and leave room for variations in the interpretation and construction of applicable provisions, which leads to disputes and discrepancies in court rulings. For this reason, it is necessary not only to compare and analyze statutory provisions pertaining to direct payment to subcontractors, but also to review issues of contention in actual cases. This study aims to analyze issues in cases involving payment to subcontractors from the perspective of the project client overseeing and supervising the construction business. The conclusions from such an analysis will help to effectively resolve subsequent cases of a similar nature by suggesting a strategy to improve the relevant statutory provisions pertaining to direct payment to subcontractors.

  • Today organizations are making considerable efforts in order to maintain excellent talent, and in particular, they are focusing on understanding their intentions of changing jobs which are most highly correlated with job turnover. In the case of architectural design firms, its intensity of work is very high unlike industrial settings, and it not only takes much time to cultivate new men of talent and but also is characteristic that employees can change livery easily because of the flexible labor market. The turnover rated by National Statistical Office indicates that specialized, scientific and technical service industry including the architectural design firm has a relatively high turnover rate compared to the average of the turnover rate of the overall industries. However, studies on intentions of changing jobs until now were conducted focused on employees engaged in other industrial areas, and it is true that studies regarding intentions of changing jobs of practitioners of architectural design firms are very insufficient. In this context, the present study aimed to draw determinants affecting intentions of changing jobs of practitioners of architectural design firms, to objectively understand the practitioners' intentions of changing jobs through importance analysis by each factor based on this and to make a comparative analysis of differences between the large scale architectural design firms and the small and medium sized architectural design firms.

A Study on the Development of Effective Regional IT Cluster (효과적인 지역IT 클러스터의 구축방안에 관한 연구)

  • This empirical study is to explain critical success factors for building effective regional IT cluster from the literature reviews which have some limitations, and is to suggest new key factors from the views of Regional Innovation System and Sectoral Systems of Innovation. For building successful cluster, the new key factors not only stress on regional networks, the spill-over of tacit knowledge through learning by interacting, institutions which contain regional custom, norms, established practices, culture, and characteristics from the Regional Innovation System, but also emphasize on heterogeneous agents who are interacting by each others from Sectoral Systems of Innovation. From these factors we suggest some strategies for building effective "Daegu IT Cluster" as following; making characterized IT brands which are selected and concentrated based on regional and IT sectoral characteristics, strengthening learning competence of tacit knowledge built in multiple heterogeneous agents network, establishing strong agent networks which are composed of universities, companies, institutes and government, and sharing the institution of mind-opening culture in order to correspond with environmental changes and link to other industrial clusters. By putting above strategies in force, the compatabilities of Daegu region are reinforced. Tacit knowledges spill over and the regional innovation competence are accumulated. Also IT cluster plays core role of employment in Daegu for long term. Especially, "Daegu IT Cluster" changes city's image from medium and small manufacturing city to new industrial city based on high technologies.

Further Empirical Analysis on Corporate R&D Intensity for KOSDAQ Listed SMEs in the Era of the Post Global Economic Crisis (국제금융위기 이후의 코스닥 상장 중소기업들의 연구개발비에 대한 실증적 심층분석)

  • The study analyzed the financial determinants of corporate R&D intensity that require more attention from academics and practitioners in the Korean capital market. Domestic small and medium enterprises (SMEs) may face with developing substitutes by making more R&D investments in scale and scope, given the unprecedented economic conditions such as the limitation of importing core components and materials from other nation(s). KOSDAQ-listed SMEs were selected as sample data, whose R&D expenditures may be less than those of large firms during the post-global financial turmoil period (2010~2018). Static panel data model was applied, along with Tobit and stepwise regression models, for examining the validity of results. Logit, probit, and complementary log-log regressions were also employed for a relative analysis. R&D expenditures in the prior year, the interaction effect between the previous R&D intensity and high-tech sector, firm size, and growth rate were significant to determine R&D intensity. Moreover, a majority of explanatory variables were found to change between the years 2011 and 2018, while time-lagged effects between the R&D intensity and growth rate exist. Results of the study are expected to be used for future research to detect optimal levels of R&D expenditures for the value maximization of SMEs.

  • Recently, the government has emphasized the importance of establishing an innovation system for SMEs as part of an innovative growth strategy for national economic development. SMEs in Korea are experiencing many difficulties due to the loss of industrial competitiveness due to the powerful wave of the 4th industrial revolution along with the pandemic of COVID-19 that started in 2020. In relation to environmental changes, it is emerging as an important issue for SMEs to pursue open innovation for survival and growth, as well as to possess excellent technological innovation capabilities. In accordance with the need for such research, this study analyzed the factors that affect business performance or technological performance of small and medium-sized manufacturers, and identified the relationship between these influencing factors and corporate performance. The results of this study suggest that it is important for SMEs to effectively utilize R&D services and technology innovation capabilities and resources possessed by SMEs to secure a competitive advantage. The results of this stu dy are considered to be able to provide basic data and information necessary for SMEs to secu re a competitive edge and enhance industrial competitiveness through government support systems and open innovation.

Study on Cosmeceutical Activities and Anti-inflammatory Activities of Magnolia biondii Extracts (신이화(辛夷花, Magnoliae Flos)추출물의 화장품약리활성 및 항염증효과에 관한 연구)

  • Existing pharmaceutical studies show that Magnolia biondii is effective in treating rhinitis and in reducing cholesterol, given its endogenous, volatile ingredients. The study herein seeks to assess the cosmeceutical activities and anti-inflammatory activities of Magnolia biondii extracts for possible application as cosmetic ingredients. The cosmeceutical and anti-inflammatory activities were investigated using hydroxyl radical scavenging, superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity, xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibition, cell viability, nitric oxide (NO) inhibition, and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression by Western blotting. Magnolia biondii extracts were identified to have antioxidant activities in hydroxyl free radical scavenging, SOD-like activity, and XO inhibition. In testing the anti-inflammatory activities of the extracts, NO production was inhibited in a dose-dependent manner. Additionally, in a dose-dependent manner, the Magnolia biondii extracts were able to suppress iNOS expression in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. From these results, Magnolia biondii showed adequate potential for application in cosmetic production and related industries as well as a functional material.

The change analysis of the competitive dynamics among the existing media from the introduction of IPTV service (IPTV 도입이 매체 간 경쟁구도 변화에 미치는 영향 분석)

  • This paper focuses on effects that IPTV will have on domestic broadcasting market in the point of view of customers. The purpose of the paper is to present the future landscape of competitive media market when IPTV is launched, and to research how IPTV will have impact on terrestrial broadcasting, cable TV and satellite broadcasting industry. The paper integrates two known theories, such as the niche-gratification model and the value-expectancy model, to analyze competitive media market. The value expected model makes it possible to overcome the weakness of the niche-gratification model and to forecast competitiveness more accurately. According to this research, competitive power will be in the order of Cable TV, IPTV, and satellite broadcasting. Terrestrial broadcasting does not show strong competitive relationships with others statistically. As a result, Cable TV will be the most competitive medium in the future. IPTV will be stuck in the middle and can rapidly substitute for existing broadcasting services. While IPTV will severely threaten the satellite broadcasting company which has a relatively small number of subscribers, cable TV will be in a superior position to IPTV.
