In this study, we were performed to elucidate the antioxidant and anticancer activity by leaves extracts from Acer tegmentosum (AT-L). In DPPH, ABTS radical scavenging activity, the AT-L revealed the high scavenging activity. Especially, the AT-L measured the highest ABTS radical scavenging activity, which is higher than ascorbic acid. The types of human cancer cells for evaluating the anticancer activity were colorectal cancer (SW480), prostate cancer (PC-3), breast cancer (MCF-7), pancreatic cancer (AsPC-1), lung cancer (A549) and liver cancer (HepG2). Human cancer cell viability was measured using MTT assay. Treatment of the AT-L decreased the cell viability and induced apoptosis in SW480 cells. These results suggest that extracts of the AT-L can be used as supplementary material for developing the natural antioxidant and anticancer drug for human cancer cells.
DNA damage induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS) seems to play an important role in the induction of mutation and cancer. Hydrogen peroxide $(H_2O_2)$ has been shown to induce a variety of genetic alterations, probably by the generation of hydroxyl radicals via Fenton reaction. In this study, we examined the ability of medicinal herbs in the suppression of $H_2O_2$-induced mutagenesis. Human fibroblast GM00637 cells were treated with $H_2O_2$ in the presence or absence of medicinal herbs, and $H_2O_2$-induced mutant frequency was measured at the hypoxanthine guanine phosphoribosyl transferase (HPRT) locus. Treatment of cells with various doses of $H_2O_2$ caused a significant increase of the HPRT mutant frequency. However, pretreatment of cells with several medicinal herbs reduced $H_2O_2$-induced mutant frequency. The strong antimutagenic effects were observed from the methylene chloride and ethyl acetate fractions of Selaginella tamariscina, Panax ginseng, and Angelica acutiloba; ethyl acetate fractions of Rehmania glutinosa, Leonurus sibiricus, Curcuma zedoaria and Commiphora molmol; butanol fractions of Scutellaria barbata, Tribulus terrestris, Curcuma zedoaria, Cyperus rotundus and Carthamus tinctorius, which were more than 60% inhibition of $H_2O_2$-induced mutant frequency at the HPRT locus.
Objectives: The Barak Valley is well known for its rich diversity of medicinal plants. Ethnomedicinal practices are prominent among Barak Valley's major and minor ethnic groups. This systemic review focuses on traditionally used medicinal plants found in the Barak Valley as reported in different ethnobotanical surveys. Methods: We searched various databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, to find ethnomedicinal surveys conducted in the Barak Valley. The search was performed using different terms, including ethnomedicinal survey, folk medicine, indigenous knowledge, and Barak Valley. Potential articles were identified following the exclusion and inclusion criteria. Results: A total of eight ethnobotanical surveys were included in this study. We identified a total of 216 plant species belonging to 167 genera and 87 families, which are widely used by the ethnic communities who live in the rural areas of Barak Valley for the treatment of various diseases and ailments. Conclusion: Folk medicine is the result of decades of accumulated knowledge and practices by people who live in rural communities based on their needs and provides an important source of information to assist the search for new pharmaceuticals. Therefore, available information on traditional medicinal plants needs to be explored scientifically to find effective and alternative treatments for different diseases.

Higher incidences of adverse reaction associated with the prolonged use of synthetic drugs has once again increased the faith of humans in the traditional systems of medicine and motivated them to return back towards the clinical proven remedies for the treatment. It is also true that number of modern medications used in the present scenario, were developed from various plants. In Unani System of medicine, numerous herbal drugs are mentioned for medicinal purpose. Siras (Albizia lebbeck (L.) Benth.) is one of them. It is found all over India. Almost all parts of this plant are used for the treatment of ailments such as migraine, conjunctivitis, diarrhea, jaundice, skin problems, asthma etc. Many chemical constituents have been isolated from Albizia lebbeck such as lebbekannin, echinocystic acid, flavonoids, Linoleic acid, saponins etc. This review highlights the medicinal properties and therapeutic uses of Albizia lebbeck and scientific studies conducted on the drug in human and animal models that will provide the further research direction.
In children, flesh and muscle are tender, mental function is feeble, digestion and absorption are weak. Also food, drink and medicine which burden the stomach and bowels must be avoided. Oriental medicines are divided in object of medical treatment into three types, liquid medicine, medicinal powder and pill. In spite of this types, time and effort are spended greatly on children's eating medicine. In this paper, studying general characteristic of oriental medicinal types and effective types of oriental medicine, I can obstain such conclusions. 1. The oriental iense pillow remedy sets at easy, promotes degistion, treats disease of theesporatory organs. 2. The distillation remedy is suited to a chronic disease of children the degistion are ak in. 3. The mother remedy, because medicine is supplied through mother's body, is effective to infant. 4. The external use remedy is suited to skin disease, eye disease and nose disease, and has similar effect to taking liquid medicine. 5. The confectionery remedy is the method which children like greatly, but is the effective method to many children because of technical manufacture.

In recent years, several therapeutic drugs have been rationally designed and synthesized based on the novel knowledge gained from investigating the actions of biologically active chemicals derived from foods, plants, and medicinal herbs. One of the major advantages of these naturalistic chemicals is their ability to interact with multiple targets in the body resulting in a combined beneficial effect. Ginseng is a perennial herb (Araliaceae family), a species within the genus Panax, and a highly valued and popular medicinal plant. Evidence for the medicinal and health benefits of Panax ginseng and its components in preventing neurodegeneration has increased significantly in the past decade. The beneficial effects of P. ginseng on neurodegenerative diseases have been attributed primarily to the antioxidative and immunomodulatory activities of its ginsenoside components. Mechanistic studies on the neuroprotective effects of ginsenosides revealed that they act not only as antioxidants but also as modulators of intracellular neuronal signaling and metabolism, cell survival/death genes, and mitochondrial function. The goal of the present paper is to provide a brief review of recent knowledge and developments concerning the beneficial effects as well as the mechanism of action of P. ginseng and its components in the treatment and prevention of neurodegenerative diseases.
To investigate the defense mechanism against the abiotic stress, a cDNA clone encoding a CuZn superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD) protein was isolated from a cDNA library prepared from tabroot mRNAs of Codonopsis lanceolata. The eDNA, designated ClSODCc, is 799 nucleotides long and has an open reading frame of 459 bp with a deduced amino acid sequence of 152 residues. The deduced amino acid sequence of ClSODCc matched to the previously reported CuZnSODs. Consensus amino acid residues (His-45, -47, -62, -70, -79, -119 and Asp-82) were involved in Cu-, Cu/Zn-, and Zn- binding ligands. The deduced amino acid sequence of ClSODCc showed high homologies (82%-86%) regardless of species. Expression of ClSODCc by oxidative stress was increased up to 1 h after treatment and declined gradually. Much earlier and stronger expression of ClSODCc was observed in the cold stress treatment.

This study was conducted to find out environment-friendly disease control method to Alternaria blight caused by Alternaria panax of ginseng. For this study, 150 methanol extracts from medicinal plants were evaluated and the extract of Impatiens balsamina showed most strong antifungal activity against A. panax. The methanol extract of I. balsamina showed also stable antifungal activity against other ginseng pathogens such as Botrytis cinerea and Fusarium sp., when treated by heat or pH. In vivo, Alternaria blight incidence rate was low of 13% with the treatment of I. balsamina methanol extract compared to 35% of the non-treatment. The antifungal compound of I. balsamina was purified and identified by using a silica gel column chromatography, TLC and ESI-LC/MS/MS analysis. The compound which showed strong antifungal activity was identified as 2-methoxy-1,4-naphtoquinone ($C_{11}H_8O_3$).
This study was undertaken to examine the feasibility of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) as substrates for several edible mushrooms. For the cultivation of several edible and/or medicinal fungi on black locust, optimum bulk densities, synthetic or semisynthetic additives, natural additives and pretreatment methods were investigated. Fruit body yields of the fungi on various sawdust media composed of different wood species were also analyzed for testing the capability of black locust as a substrate for mushroom production. Mycelial growths decreased proportional when the bulk density increased. The most suitable carbon and nitrogen sources as additives to promote the mycelial growth were sucrose (2%, w/w) and ammonium phosphate (0.2%, w/w) respectively. When corn-powder and beer-waste as natural additives were added to sawdust of black locust showed the significant growth of mycelia. And the optimum mixing ratio was 10:2:1 (sawdust: corn-powder: beer-waste, w/w). Black locust after cold water treatment showed the outstanding mycelial growths. Any significant changes of pH, moisture content (%) and dry-weight losses (%) could not be found among culture substrates (sawdust of black locust, oak and poplar wood) examined before and after harvesting of fruit bodies. Yield of fruit bodies on black locust culture media were comparable with those culture media composed with oak and poplar wood. The present work indicated strongly the potentiality of black locust as raw materials for edible and medicinal mushrooms.
