  • Objectives : By studying the contents of Zhang Yuansu's "Zhenmairushijie", which are introductory remarks of "Chandobangronmaekkyulgipseong", this study attempts to clarify the academic meaning expressed in it and consider his real significance. Methods : First, based on previous studies on Zhang Yuansu and "Wangshuhemaijue", this study divides the contents of "Zhenmairushijie" into 4 chapters and read out the original text. Next, based on Zhang Yuansu's notes and other writings on the original text, this study examines contents in detail. Finally, based on the discussion, this study examines the current significance of academic thoughts expressed in Zhang Yuansu's "Zhenmairushijie". Results & Conclusions : "Zhenmairushijie" emphasizes the combination of nervation and Byeonggi in the process of feeling the pulse for diagnosis, the combination of Byeonggi and Yongyak to declare that the feeling of the pulse for diagnosis is the principle of differential diagnosis. The combination principle of nervation-Byeonggi can be found in comprehensive pulse methods of "Nanjing", and the combination of Byeonggi-Yongyak should follow Ohaeng's Bubuheoshilsajeongbosa principle. Pulse methods of "Wangshuhemaijue" integrated Byeonggi expressed in Uigyeong and Byeonggi in Gyeongbang in the process of the feeling of the pulse for diagnosis to present the principle of diagnosis to perform Byeongjeungronchi. Therefore, "feeling the pulse for diagnosis ipsik" is not only an introductory remark of feeling the pulse for diagnosis, but an comprehensive remark of whole diagnosis as well. It is an introductory remark of the entire medical field due to the nature of oriental medicine which emphasizes diagnosis.

  • Objectives : Medical records of Xueji in the "Xiaozhufurenliangfang" were examined in this study which aimed to look at the medical situation in gynecology of China's Ming Dynasty period, in hopes for it to yield implications and treatment directions to gynecology in $21^{st}$ century Korea. Methods : The medical records were systematically organized with a medical anthropological approach along with overall analysis of the entire records, which lent meaningful statistical information in numeric form. A bibliographical review of the text as historical artifact was undertaken as well. Results : In managing gynecological conditions, Xueji frequently attributed them to depletion of Qi and Blood of the Spleen and Liver. In terms of pathogenic factors, he frequently mentioned Fire and Heat, and as etiological factors, emotional distress. For treatment, he frequently used 'Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang(補中益氣湯)', 'Xiao Yao San(逍遙散)' and 'Gui Pi Tang(歸脾湯)'. Conclusions : Through studying the medical records of Xueji in "Xiaozhufurenliangfang" a close look into a master's insight on gynecological disorders in terms of diagnosis and treatment was achieved. The formulas he used are widely applied even today, and this study shows that the formulas's clinical application could be expanded even wider.

  • Objectives : In this paper, the characteristics and significance of Chimgyeongyogyeol (=Chimguyogyeol) were analyzed. Furthermore, the purpose of this study is to examine which books were based on the origin of the medical knowledge enjoyed by Ryu, Seongryong at the time. Methods : The bibliography of each transmitted version of Chimgyeongyogyeol is considered, then the items are compared, and finally, the citations of the relevant contents are examined. Cited literature was analyzed by item, and sources were identified where the contents were cited. Results : 1. Chimgyeongyogyeol was published three times. 2. At present, it is not known which tradition text is the oldest. The transmission relationship between several transmission versions is not clear. 3. Chimgyeongyogyeol was written with reference to various other medical books, centered on Uihagibmun. 4. There is no information about 'Choose a day to perform acupuncture' and 'Zaoyuju acupuncture', which were widely popular in Joseon at the time. This reflects the purpose of writing to convey medical knowledge to the general public. Conclusions : Chimgyeongyogyeol was an acupuncture book written for the purpose of conveying medical knowledge to the common people by reflecting the latest medical achievements in China. Through this, the knowledge of acupuncture enjoyed by the author and what he aimed for through it were confirmed. However, it was impossible to completely compose the system of the first draft only with the extant version.

  • The Summary Handbook of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (鍼灸要覽) (SHAM) was written by an unknown folk healer who learned acupuncture about 100 years ago in Korea. The book discusses 79 acupoints and includes a table of contents, a text, and a pair of acupoint charts. The acupoints in the book are classed under two headings, 49 acupoints of 14 meridians and 33 acupoints. A number of the acupoints such as Gichoong (氣忠), Eumheobong (陰虛峰), Goowa (口卧), Cheonryang (天良) did not fit the then existing meridian system and were newly uncovered by the authors. The book also discusses needle insertion depth in a way that is quite different from how insertion depth is understood by clinicians today. Books such as SHAM that record new acupoints and treatments are rare among Korea's existing medical and clinical books and can be said to be very important in terms of medical history.
