  • A new in vivo high resolution imaging method which is performed with a newly developed three channel surface gradient coil (SGC) is described. The surface gradient coil can produce more than an order of magnitude stronger gradient fields with good linearity within a limited imaging region. To increase the signal to noise ratio (SNR), we have developed an RF coil integrated surface gradient coil set. In this paper, the geometrical structures and characteristics of the proposed surface gradient coil are discussed and experimentally obtained high resolution images ($50\;{\mu}m$ to $100\;{\mu}m$) of a water filled phantom and a human volunteer's knee using the new surface RF coil integrated SGC set are presented for the demonstration of the in vivo high resolution imaging capability of the new imaging method.

  • This study deals with a kind of signal processing, Kalman filtering techniques, which are applied to ultrasound signal to improve resolution capability. The main advantage of Kalman filter algorithm for the analysis of reflected ultrasound signal is its recursive structure which can be easily adapted to time-varing system. In state-space description of the system, the 6th order system produces the best spectral approximation to the source pulse. As a result of spectrum analysis, 6th order estimator for two closely spaced (0.5mm) reflectors enhance resolution by 4dB - 10dB. By using this result, the possibility to detect even minute tumor is found.

  • X-ray systems for medical treatment use noninvasive procedures. I fabricated a high tension generator of a full-wave rectification type using a LC resonant inviter. It is said that a full-wave rectifying X-ray equipment such as the fabricated system can shorten initiating period and be precision control because of stable output, compared with the X-ray equipment of a half wave rectifying type used in the usual clinical medicine. In order to evaluate the capability of the fabricated high tension generator, I performed exposure dose characteristics experiments.

  • Virtual Reality makes a virtual environment more realistic and, furthermore, it provides a variety of experiences which we cannot have in reality. A drastic growth of GPU performance and increase of computing capability make virtual environment more realistic than ever. One important element of constructing virtual environment is to animate 3D characters. Many researchers have been studying 3D characters animating and a myriad of methods have been proposed to make them more realistic. In this paper, we discuss the technologies and characteristics of 3D character animation. We believe that realistic characters in Virtual Reality will be applied to various fields: education, film and game industry, business and, particularly, medical area such as telemedicine, virtual surgery, etc.

  • Microjet flows are often encountered in many industrial applications of micro-electro-mechanical systems as well as in medical engineering fields such as a transdermal drug delivery system for needle-free injection of drugs into the skin. The Reynolds numbers of such microjets are usually several orders of magnitude below those of larger-scale jets. The supersonic microjet physics with these low Reynolds numbers are not yet understood to date. Computational modeling and simulation can provide an effective predictive capability for the major features of the supersonic microjets. In the present study, computations using the axisymmetic, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations are applied to understand the supersonic microjet flow physics. The pressure ratio of the microjets is changed to obtain both the under- and over-expanded flows at the exit of the micronozzle. Sonic and supersonic microjets are simulated and compared with some experimental results available. Based on computational results, two microjets are discussed in terms of total pressure, jet decay and supersonic core length.

  • Recently, the needs for marketing activities is increasing of the hospitals, but there are no such measurement for the efficiency and the effectiveness of the marketing activities. Thus, the research aims to suggest the necessity of approach method which can combine the efficiency and the effectiveness of the marketing activities both systematically and comprehensively in line with examining the current status of marketing capability of hospitals in Korea. From the research findings, it is known that, in respect of financial performance, hospitals in Korea should establish the plan and implement accordingly in order increase both the sales revenue and profit ratio in contrast to the sales revenue through strengthening the internal marketing activities rather than the external marketing activities.

  • Topology optimization method has a great advantage and capability over a conventional shape optimization technique because it optimizes a topology as well as a shape and size of structure. The purpose of the present study, using topology optimization method with an objective function of minimum compliance as a mechanism of bone remodeling, is to examine which shape factors of femur is strongly related with the curvature of femoral shaft. As is expected, the optimized curvature increased definitely with neck angle among the shape factors and showed a similar trend with the measured curvature to neck angle. Therefore, the topology optimization method can be successfully applied in the analysis of bone remodeling phenomenon in the subsequent studies.

  • This paper describes a real time algorithm for blood flow estimation of LDF(laser Doppler flowmeter). Many algorithms for blood flow estimation are using power spectral density of Doppler signal by blood flow. In these research, the fast Fourier transformation is used to estimate power spectral density. This is a block processing procedure rather than real time processing. The algorithm in this paper used parametric spectral estimation. This has real time capability by estimation of AR(autoregressive) parameters sample by sample, and has smoothing power spectrum. Also, the frequency resolution is not limited by number of samples used to estimate AR parameter. Another advantage of this algorithm is that AR model enhance SNR.

  • A neural spike sorting technique has been developed that also has the capability of template learning. A system of software has been written that first obtains the templates by learning, and then performs the sorting of the spikes into single units. The spike sorting can be done in real time. The template learning consists of spike detection based on the discrete Haar transform (DHT), feature extraction by clustering of spike amplitude and duration, classification based on rms error, and fabrication of templates. The developed algorithms can be implemented into real time systems using digital signal processors.

  • Due to the capability of net shaping for complex 3D geometry, powder injection molding (PIM) is widely used for automotive parts, electronics and medical industry. In this study, an ultrasonic dental scaler tip produced by machining process was redesigned for the PIM process. An injection mold was designed and manufactured to produce the dental scaler tip by the PIM process.
