  • Human observers perceive a contour where no line or edge is given (subject contour), such as the border between gratings of thin lines offset by half a cycle. Subjective contours occur in a wide variety of circumstances in nature. A common factor in all such figures in the perception of a surface(contour) occuluding part of a background, i.e. subject contours are always accompanied by subject surfaces. Some examples about these kinds of figures are given by kanizsa trangle or square. Ph;ysiological observations are reported in which the perceptual phenomenon that some simple examples of subject contours are perceived as images (gigures; contours) through physiological experiments was investgated. In this paper, we proposed a neural network extracting the induce dstimuli for the perception of subject contours based on the visual mechnism. This visual mechnism is proposed by hubel & wiesel's paper.

  • Under the vigorous search for active novel agents for cancer prevention and treatment, some agents have been found from plants and animals which are easily available. Our review of literature on them revealed that C. annuum L. var. angulosum Mill had high antiproliferating effect on cancer cells. Thus we investigated the efficacy of C. annuum L. var. angulosum Mill on cancer cell lines and to examined its effect on the mouse to detect other side effect and mechnism by which the extrat of C. annuum L. var. angulosum Mill had the anti-cancer efficacy on cancer. • The POSTECH Hand adopting coupled tendon driven technique with planar two fingers is developed. The hand is designed to emulate principal motions of the human hand which has two and three joints respectively. Its kinematic parameters are determined through a parameter optimizing technique to aim at improving the isotropy of fingertip motions with new criterion functions of design. For the control of the hand, tension and torque control algorithms are developed. Based on the virtual stiffness concept, we develop the stiffness control method of a grasped object with redundant finger mechnism and investigate experimentally.

  • Demand of good seakeeping perfomace is increasing for sea going vessels such as cruisers, naval ships and container ships. Especillay roll motion is one of major concerns in evaluation of seakeeping performance due to its large resonace motion. Since large roll resonance motion is mainly arised from inherent small damping. use of additional mechnism to provide roll damping can significantly reduce roll motion. In this paper, a reliable performace evaluation method of fin stabilizer, which is very useful for stabilizing roll motion of mid and high speed vessls, is described. Model test and time domain simulation methods are adopted for performance evaluation in which real operating situation of fin stabilizer can be exactly modelled. Model test and simulation results show good correlations between model test and simulation results.

  • In aqueous acid solution ${[Cr(CN)_6]}^{3-}$ aquates via a series of stepwise stereospecific reactions to give ${[Cr{(H_2O)}_6]}^{3+}$as the final product. Some of the intermediate cyanoaquo complexes in the sequence have been isolated. These complexes aquate by both acid independent and acid denpendent pathways, the latter involving protonation of the cyano ligands followed by aquation of the singly protonated species. The kinetic data for the aquation of {[CrCN{(H_2O)}_5]}^{2+}$ are consistent with the transition state structure ${[{(H_2O)}_4Cr(CN)-OH-Cr{(H_2O)}_5]}^{3+}$. Addition of $Cr^{2+}$ to solutions of cyanocobalt(III) complexes produces the metastable intermediate${[CrNC{(H_2O)}_5]}^{2+}$ This isomerizes to in a $Cr^{2+}$-catalyzed reaction which occurs by a ligand-bridged electron-change mechnism. From acid catalysis on these aquation reactions, it product HCN. Especially, $HSO_3$-ions do the role of catalyst in the formation of HCN from $CrCN^{3-}$

  • A new type of rotational motor which is developed has a resolution smaller than 10 $^{-4}$ radian and can be accessed for full rotational angles. The operation principle of the motor is based on inchworm motion of two belt driving mechanism. Flexure hinge mechanism, which is pertinent to symmetry construction of the motor, is designed to minimze the effort to frame and is analyzed by using finite element method. Depending on input signal amplitude, rotational angle by one cycle is varied form 0.2*10 $^{-4}$ rad to 9.76* $^{-4}$ rad. This shows that it has the capability of getting very small rotational angle by considering radius of rotor and amplitude of input signal.

  • This paper focuses on development of a performance manager for IEEE 802.4 token bus networks to serve large-scale integrated systems. In order to construct the management algorithm, the principles of fuzzy logic, genetic algorithm, and neural network have been combined to represent human knowledge and to imitate of human inference mechanism. Through the simulation experiments, it is shown that the proposed performance manager is capable of improving the network performance without a priori knowledge.

  • As power systems tend to be operated more closely to their ultimate ratings. the role of SCOPF is changed and the importance for real-time security inhancement will be more increased in the new and competitive electricity market. This paper deals with the application of the SCOPF which make possible the On-Line application. The security margin of power system truly is changed according to the conditions or configuration of power system, therefore, the sensitivity factor related to the security is recalculated and the application should be updated in accordance with the state of power system. The proposed mechnism has been tested on modified Woolenberg 18-bus system and the results show more secure conditions against critical contingencies.

  • A coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) technique is applied to measure temperature profile in a flame. The CARS signal is obtained with BOXCARS phase matching to get better spatial resolution. A program routine for calculating temperature of the flame from the measured CARS spectra is studied. The routine includes the line broadening mechnism of the molecules described with a modified energy gap (MEG) law by using the perturbation theory. We have found that the temperature profile obtained with the MEG law is properly fit with the results measured with a thermocoulpe and calculated with the adiabatic theory.
