  • Time-dependent creep analysis of a rotating functionally graded cantilever beam with trapezoidal longitudinal cross section subjected to thermal and inertia loading is investigated using first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The model described in this paper is a simple simulation of a turbine blade working under creep condition. The material is a metal based composite reinforced by a ceramic where the creep properties of which has been described by the Sherby's constitutive model. All mechanical and thermal properties except Poisson's ratio are assumed to be variable longitudinally based on the volume fraction of constituent. The principle of virtual work as well as first order shear deformation theory is used to derive governing equations. Longitudinal distribution of displacements and stresses are investigated for various volume fractions of reinforcement. Method of successive elastic solution is employed to obtain history of stresses and creep deformations. It is found that stresses and displacements approach their steady state values after 40000 hours. The results presented in this paper can be used for selection of appropriate longitudinal distribution of reinforcement to achieve the desired stresses and displacements.

  • A more efficient method for obtaining the fatigue life enhancement of a structure member with fastener holes is described. It is based on the combined process of cold-expansion and ring-indentation. Residual stresses were induced onto premachined holes using ring-indentation process near the fastener hole combined with cold-expansion. And residual stresses at the vicinity of a hole were evaluated using a fracture mechanics approach. The compressive residual stresses were larger using the combined process than is in the case of simple cold-expansion. Fatigue testing of aluminum specimens showed that the fatigue crack growth retardation emanating from a circular hole was greater for the combined process than for a simple cold-expansion alone.

  • Dielectric loss tangent and ac dielectric strength of GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastics, G-10)was investigated as parameters of mechanical and thermal stresses, in order to study the basic dielectrical characteristics of composite insulating materials. The dielectric loss tangent was increased and the ac dielectric strength was decreased with increase in the mechanical stresses beyond the mechanical yield point on account of fiber-matrix debonding, but the dielectric constant was not varied sigificantly. the dielectric strength of G-10 was about 2 MV/cm and the dielectric constant was about 4.8.

  • Few investigations of bread dough compressibility have been reported in the literature, despite the fact that high compression stresses are often reached in processing. Here we report some experiments on the compressibility of an Australian wheat bread dough under compressive stresses up to 5 MPa, and show that the results are consistent with a mathematical model of bread dough containing entrained air. The implications for tensile testing are also considered.

  • Transient solution of asymmetric mechanical and thermal stresses for hollow cylinders made of functionally graded material is presented. Temperature distribution, as function of radial and circumferential directions and time, is analytically obtained, using the method of separation of variables and generalized Bessel function. A direct method is used to solve the Navier equations, using the Euler equation and complex Fourier series.

  • Current methodologies used for the inference of thin film stresses through curvature measurements are strictly restricted to stress and curvature states which are assumed to remain uniform over the entire film/substrate system. These methodologies have recently been extended to non-uniform stress and curvature states for the thin film subject to non-uniform, isotropic misfit strains. In this paper we study the same thin film/substrate system but subject to non-uniform, anisotropic misfit strains. The film stresses and system curvatures are both obtained in terms of the non-uniform, anisotropic misfit strains. For arbitrarily non-uniform, anisotropic misfit strains, it is shown that a direct relation between film stresses and system curvatures cannot be established. However, such a relation exists for uniform or linear anisotropic misfit strains, or for the average film stresses and average system curvatures when the anisotropic misfit strains are arbitrarily non-uniform.

  • The paper studies the dispersion of the axisymmetric longitudinal wave propagating in the "hollow cylinder + surrounding medium" system with inhomogeneous initial stresses caused by the uniformly distributed radial compressional forces acting at infinity. Up to now in the world literature, there exist only a few investigations related to the wave dispersion in a hollow cylinder with inhomogeneous initial stresses. Therefore, this paper is one of the first attempts in this field in the sense of the development of investigations for the case where the cylinder is surrounded with an infinite medium. The three-dimensional linearized theory of elastic waves is used for describing the considered wave propagation problem and, for a solution to the corresponding mathematical problem, the discrete-analytical solution method is developed and employed. The corresponding dispersion equation is obtained and this equation is solved numerically and, as a result of this solution, the dispersion curves are constructed for the first and second modes. By analyzing these curves, the character of the influence of the inhomogeneous initial stresses on the dispersion curves is established. In particular, it is established that as a result of the inhomogeneity of the initial stresses both new dispersion curves and the "band gap" for the wave frequencies can appear.

  • One of the main causes of unwanted dimensional changes in precision metal mold casting parts is excessive and irregular residual stresses induced by temperature gradients and plastic deformation in the solidifying shell. Residual stresses can also cause stress cracking, and lower the fatigue life and fracture strength of the casting parts. In the present study, aluminum alloy casting system with metal mold equipped with electrical heating elements and water cooling units was designed and the casting specimens were produced to quantify the effects of different cooling conditions on the development of residual stresses. The layer removal method was used to measure the biaxial residual stresses in casting specimens produced from the experiments. The experimental results agreed with Tien-Richmond's theoretical model for thermal stress development for the solidifying metal plate.

  • Residual stress is one of the causes which makes defects in engineering components and materials. These residual stresses can occur in many engineering structures and can sometimes lead to premature failures. There are commonly used methods by which residual stresses are currently measured. But these methods have a little damage and other problems; therefore, a new experimental technique has been devised to measure residual stress in materials with a combination of electronic laser interferometry, laser heating and finite element method. The electronic laser interferometer measures in-plane deformations while the laser heating and cooling provides for very localized stress relief. FEM is used for determining the heat temperature and other parameters. The residual stresses are determined by the amount of strain that is measured subsequent to the heat-up and cool-down of the region being interrogated. A simple model is presented to provide a description of the method. In this paper, the ambiguity problem for the fringe patterns has solved by a phase shifting method.

  • In the first part of this study, a numerical simulation model was developed using the mechanical APDL software to validate the results of the 3D-elastisity theory on the laminated sandwich plate developed by Panago. The numerical simulation model showed a good agreement to the results of Pagano's theory in terms of deflection, normal stresses, and shear stresses. In the second part of this study, the developed numerical simulation model was used to define different plates dimensions and fibers layup orientations to examine the load response in terms of deflection and stresses. Further analysis was implemented on the natural frequencies of laminated xxx plates of the plates. The layup configurations include Unidirectional (UD), Cross-Ply (CP), Quasi-Isotropic (QI), the linear bio-inspired known as Linear-Helicoidal (LH), and the nonlinear bio-inspired known as Fibonacci-Helicoidal (FH). The following numerical simulation model can be used for the design and study of novel, sophisticated bio-inspired composite structures in a variety of configurations subjected to sinusoidal or constant loads.
