Laser-assisted machining (LAM) is known to be an effective and economical technique for improving the machinability of difficult-to-machine materials. In the LAM method, material is preheated using a laser heat source and then the preheated area is removed by following cutting tool. For laser-assisted turning (LAT), the configuration of the system is not complicated because laser irradiates from a fixed position. In contrast, laser-assisted milling (LAMill) system is not only complicated but also difficult to control because laser heat source must always move ahead of the cutting tool along a three dimensional (3D) tool path. LAMill is still early stage and cannot yet be used to machine finished products with 3D shapes. In this study, a laser-assisted fillet milling process was developed for machining 3D shapes. There are no prior studies combining fillet milling and LAMill. Laser-assisted fillet milling strategy was proposed, and effective depth of cut (EDOC) was obtained using thermal analysis. Experiments were designed using response surface method and cutting force prediction equations were developed using statistical analysis and regression analysis. The optimum machining conditions were also proposed, and energy efficiency of the LAMill was analyzed by comparing the specific cutting energy of conventional machining (CM) and LAMill.

Mechanically driven decomposition of intermetallics during mechanical milling(MM 1 was investigated. This process for Fe-Ce and Fe-Sn system was studied using conventional XRD, DSC, magnetization and alternative current susceptibility measurements. Mechanical alloying and milling form products of the following composition (in sequence of increasing Gecontent): $\alpha$(${\alpha}_1$) bcc solid solution, $\alpha$+$\beta$-phase ($Fe_{2-x}Ge$), $\beta$-phase, $\beta$+FeGe(B20), FeGE(B20), FeGe(B20)+$FeGe_2$,$FeGe_2$,$FeGe_2$+Ge, Ge. Incongruently melting intermetallics $Fe_6Ge_5$ and $Fe_2Ge_3$ decompose under milling. $Fe_6Ge_5$ produces mixture of $\hat{a}$-phase and FeGe(B20), $Fe_2Ge_3$ produces mixture of FeGe(B20) and $FeGe_2$ phases. These facts are in good agreement with the model that implies local melting as a mechanism of new phase for-mation during medchanical alloying. Stability of FeGe(B20) phase, which is also incongruently melting compound, is explained as a result of highest density of this phase in Fe-Ge system. Under mechanical milling (MM) in planetary ball mill, FeSn intermetallic decomposes with formation $Fe_5Sn_3$ and $FeSn_2$ phases, which have the biggest density among the phases of Fe-Sn system. If decomposition degree of FeSn is relatively small(<60%), milled powder shows superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature. For this case, magnetization curves can be fitted by superposition of two Langevin functions. particle sizes for ferromagnetic $Fe_5Sn_3$ phase determined from fitting parameters are in good agreement with crystalline sizes determined from XRD data and remiain approximately chageless during MM. The decomposition of FeSn is attributed to the effects of local temperature and local pressure produced by ball collisions.

The comprehensive system analysis for contour milling operation and its error has performed in this study. The obtained experimental results were from the practical points of view. In down-milling operation the contour error curve illustrates bigger thean actual workpiece radius. The contour error increased when the cutter loads increased. Through the procedural evaluation, it could ascertain the characteristics of generation mechanics in circular contour machining error, and the weight of each factors.

This paper presents an effective cutting force model that enables us to predict the instantaneous cutting force in face milling from knowledge of the work material properties and the cutting conditions. The development of the model is based on the orthogonal machining theory with the effective rake angle, which is defined in the plane containing the cutting velocity vector and the chip flow vector. Face milling tests are performed at different feeds and, a fairly good agreement is shown between the predicted cutting forces and the test results.

This paper describes the development of a tool management system of milling operations in CIM environment. The system consists of modules for tool room management, tool purchasing, tool magazine management and tool selection. The tool selection is interactively performed by the aid of the graphic icons of milling cutter. The so-called UNICODE tool coding system is also developed to unify different kinds of codes from different tool manufacturers. The system runs on IBM PC AT.

A burr has been defined as undesirable projection of material formed as the result of plastic flow from a cutting or shearing operation. It is unavoidable in all kinds of machining operation. As a result, burr makes troubles on manufacturing process due to deburring cost, quality of products and productivity. In face milling operation, burrs are formed along five edges on the workpiece. In this study, the primary interest is about exit burr The influence of the cutting parameters on the formation of exit burrs in face milling will be described experimentally. Using the results of experimental study, burr types are classified according to appearance and formation mechanism in exit burr. The burr formation mechanism in each type of burr is suggested. Data bases are developed to predict burr formation result.

The machining method by using end-milling tool has been applying in machining structures of various shapes because of the availability. Recently, all kinds of industries based on the parts of micro shape are developing, and the demands of mechanical micro machining technology are Increasing suddenly to produce these parts. According to such changes, the technology of the micro end-milling machining is applying as one of the most important machining means. This research is to aim at developing machining technology for various micro structures using micro end-mill. This paper introduces micro mechanical machining system with ultra precision, and demonstrates methods manufacturing all sorts of parts and moldings for industry and examples of applicable machining by using micro end-milling tool of micro sizes from hundreds to tens in diameter.
W-12.8wt%Cu-7.2%Pb powders were milled at room temperature and $-100^{\circ}C$ to investigate the mechanical alloying behavior of immiscible W-Cu-Pb system and the effect of milling temperature on the extent of alloying and microstructural refinement. W-Cu-Pb powder reached steady state after further extended milling due to Pb addition, compared to the W-Cu system. The cryomilling at $-100^{\circ}C$ caused the more refinement of powder particle size, and enhanced the solubility of Cu or Pb in W, compared with milling at room temperature. In W-12.8wt%Cu-7.2%Pb powder cryomilled at $-100^{\circ}C$, the monotectic temperature of Cu-Pb as well as the melting temperature of Cu was decreased by refinement of Cu crystalline size, and the most amorphization was occurred after milling for 150 h.
Ni-CNT(Carbon Nanotubes) composite coating is often used for the surface treatment of mechanical/electronic devices to improve the properties of the Ni coating. For the Ni-CNT coating, the dispersion of CNT fibers is a critical process. In this study, ultrasonic treatment instead of the conventional ball milling was attempted as a dispersion method for the electroless Ni-CNT coating. SEM-EDX analysis was performed and contact angle, sheet resistance, and micro-hardness were measured. Results showed that the ultrasonic treatment was comparable to the ball milling, as a dispersion method, but the difference was negligible. However, combined ball milling and ultrasonic treatment(double treatment) showed much improved micro-hardness value, above 350Hv(close to the value obtained by the Ni-CNT electroplating). In addition, electroless Ni-CNT(double-treated) coatings formed on the thin Ni film deposited by the electroless plating(double coating) showed better mechanical properties. Thus, double treatment and double coating are suggested as an improved electroless Ni-CNT coating method.

In present work, manufacturing technologies of titanium hydride powder were studied for recycling of titanium tuning chip and for this, attrition ball milling was carried out under $H_2$ pressure of 0.5 MPa. Ti chips were completely transformed into $TiH_2$ within several hundred seconds. Dehydrogenation process $TiH_2$ powders is consist of two reactions: one is reaction of $TiH_2$ to $TiH_x$ and the other decomposition of $TiH_x$ to Ti and $H_2$. The former reaction shows relatively low activation energy and it is suggested that the reaction is caused by introduction of defects due to milling.
