  • The design rules are being more strict with requirement of operation speed and development of IC industry. For this reason, required minimum line-width has been narrowed under sub-micron region. As the length of minimum line-width is narrowed, local and global planarization are being prominent. CMP(Chemical-Mechanical Polishing), one of the planarizarion technology, is a process which polishes with the ascent of chemical reaction and relative velocity between pad and wafer without surface defects. CMP is performed with a complex interaction among many factors, how CMP has an interaction with such factors is not evident. Accordingly, the studies on this are still carrying out. Therefore, an examination of the CMP phenomena and an accurate understanding of compositive factors are urgently needed. In this paper, we will consider of the relations between the effects of temperature which influences many factors having an effect on polishing results and the characteristics of CMP in order to understand and estimate the influence of temperature. Then, through the interaction of shown temperature and polishing result, we could expect to boost fundamental understanding on complex CMP phenomena.

  • A human-friendly interactive system that is based on the harmonious symbiotic coexistence of human and robots is explored. Based on interactive technology paradigm, a robotic cane is proposed for blind or visually impaired travelers to navigate safely and quickly through obstacles and other hazards faced by blind pedestrians. Robotic aids, such as robotic canes, require cooperation between human and robots. Various methods for implementing the appropriate cooperative recognition, planning, and acting, have been investigated. The issues discussed include the interaction between humans and robots, design issues of an interactive robotic cane, and behavior arbitration methodologies for navigation planning.

  • The tensile and fatigue experiments were conducted with tensile-peel specimens for investigating on strength of adhesively bonded and mechanical press joints of aluminum sheet used in the field of the automobile industry. The combining epoxy adhesive bonding and mechanical press joining exhibits an increase in joining force as a result of interaction between static forces of the two joining methods. The fatigue strength of pure adhesive joint was measured as 91% of that of the combination of adhesive bond and mechanical press joint, suggesting that the interaction between the bonding and mechanical joining was about 9%.

  • Human heart valves diseased by congenital heart defects, rheumatic fever, bacterial infection, cancer may cause stenosis or insufficiency in the valves. Treatment may be with medication but often involves valve repair or replacement (insertion of an artificial heart valve). Bileaflet mechanical heart valves (BMHVs) are widely implanted to replace the diseased heart valves, but still suffer from complications such as hemolysis, platelet activation, tissue overgrowth and device failure. These complications are closely related to both flow characteristics through the valves and leaflet dynamics. In this study, the physiological flow interacting with the moving leaflets in a bileaflet mechanical heart valve (BMHV) is simulated with a strongly coupled implicit fluid-structure interaction (FSI) method which is newly organized based on the Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) approach and the dynamic mesh method (remeshing) in FLUENT. The simulated results are in good agreement with previous experimental studies. This study shows the applicability of the present FSI model to the complicated physics interacting between fluid flow and moving boundary.

  • Turbine-generator torsional response is caused by interaction between electrical transient air-gap torque and mechanical characteristics of turbine-generator shafts. There are various factors that affects torsional interaction such as fault, circuit breaker switching and generator mal-synchronizing, etc. Fortunately, we can easily simulate above torsional interaction phenomena by using ElectroMagnetic Transient Program (EMTP). However, conventional EMTP shows the incomplete response of super- synchronous torsional mode since it does not consider turbine blade section. Therefore, in this paper, we introduced mechanical-electrical analogy for detailed modeling of turbine-generator shaft system including low pressure turbine blade section. In addition, we derived the natural frequencies of modeled turbine-generator shaft system including turbine blade section and analyzed the characteristics of mechanical torque response at shaft coupling and turbine blade root area according to power system balanced/unbalanced faults.

  • For mechanical system operating at high temperature, damage due to the interaction effect of creep and fatigue plays an important role. The objective of this paper is to develop a modified creep-fatigue damage model which separately analyzes the pure creep damage for hold time and the creep-fatigue interaction damage during startup and shutdown period. The creep damage was calculated by the general creep damage equation and the creep-fatigue interaction damage was calculated by the modified equation which is based on the frequency modified strain range method with strain rate term. In order to verify the proposed model, a service of high temperature low cycle fatigue tests were performed. The test specimens were made from inconel-718 superalloy and the test parameters were wave shape and hold time. A good agreement between the predicted lives based on the proposed model and experimentally obtained ones was observed.

  • A numerical analysis of shock wave/boundary layer interaction in transonic/supersonic axial flow compressor cascade has been performed by using a characteristics upwind Navier-Stokes method with various turbulence models. Two equation turbulence models were applied to transonic/supersonic flows over a NACA 0012 airfoil. The results are superion to those from an algebraic turbulence model. High order TVD schemes predicted shock wave/boundary layer interactions reasonably well. However, the prediction of SWBLI depends more on turbulence models than high order schemes. In a supersonic axial flow cascade at M=1.59 and exit/inlet static pressure ratio of 2.21, k-$\omega$ and Shear Stress Transport (SST) models were numerically stables. However, the k-$\omega$ model predicted thicker shock waves in the flow passage. Losses due to shock/shock and shock/boundary layer interactions in transonic/supersonic compressor flowfields can be higher losses than viscous losses due to flow separation and viscous dissipation.

  • In this paper, elastic and plastic adhesion index was very important in deciding adhesive characteristics and varying elastic and plastic index, dimensionless load and pull-off force were analyzed and simulated. Finally, using AFM, experimental surface roughness parameters of substrates and pull-off force between tip and substrates were produced. Using these values, pull-off forces were calculated and were compared with experimental pull-off forces. Through simulation and experiment, it was found that interaction of asperity also had very important influence on adhesive contact.

  • Many approximate models for interaction between a flexible structure and an infinite external acoustic medium have been developed for a long time. Among them, Doubly Asymptotic Approximations (DAAs) are very well known approximations. But, it has shortcomings in intermediate frequency range and can't fully describe the acoustic medium. So, this paper presents the modified approximation by applying the retarded and advanced potentials to Kirchhoff's formula. It describes the external acoustic medium more in detail and shows a good result in early time transient responses when it was applied to a spherical shell. Through a spherical shell interacting with external acoustic medium, the transient responses for the proposed model is compared to Huang's exact solution and DAA2.

  • A ducted marine propulsor has been widely used for the thruster of underwater vehicles for protecting collision damage, increasing propulsive efficiency, and reducing cavitation. Since a single-stage ducted propulsor contains a set of rotor and stator inside an annular duct, the numerical analysis becomes extremely complex and computationally expensive. However, the accurate prediction of viscous flow past a ducted marine propulsor is essential for determining hydrodynamic forces and the propulsive performances. To analyze a ducted propulsor having rotor-stator Interaction, the present work has solved 3D incompressible RANS equations on the sliding multiblocked grid. The flow of a single stage turbine flow was simulated for code validation and time averaged pressure coefficients were compared with experiments. Good agreement was obtained. The hydrodynamic performance coefficients were also computed.
