Ceramic Diesel Particulate Filter Structure with Inclined Gas Paths

  • This paper presents a novel structure for a diesel particulate filter (DPF) with inclined gas paths, which was designed so that the gas paths offered a fluent flow of exhaust gases, and particulate matter (PM) was collected at pores formed in the body. The alumina porous filter was prepared by a conventional sintering process at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. Straight gas paths with $30^{\circ}$ of inclination from the gas flow direction were formed in the filter body. It is shown that this filter structure worked as a PM filter, in which 90.2% of soot filtration efficiency and 59.6 mbar of pressure drop were achieved.

Development of composite filter with high performance meltblown non-woven (고성능 멜트블로운 부직포 복합필터 개발)

  • Electret filter is good enough to protect health and environment from air pollution. The reason why is gathering particles not only by mechanical mechanism but also by electrostatic attraction. Especially this filter is shown lower pressure drop than general mechanical filters as glass fiber. For making electret filter media using polypropylene meltblown(M/B) nonwoven, the nonwoven is charged with corona which was supplied high voltage DC, AC, and pulse with DC power. The electret filter media is tested with $0.3{\mu}m$ sodium chloride and dioctyl phthalate(DOP) aerosol. Results revealed that filtration performance of electret filter media increased as corona was applied with higher voltage and with AC power rather than DC, and fiber diameter was fine and uniform.

  • The longitudinal velocity (forward speed) having significant importance in proper running of railway wheelset on track, depends greatly upon the adhesion ratio and creep analysis by implementation of suitable dynamic system on contamination. The wet track condition causes slip and slide of vehicle on railway tracking, whereas high speed may also increase slip and skidding to severe wear and deterioration of mechanical parts. The basic aim of this research is to design appropriate model aimed estimator that can be used to control railway vehicle forward velocity to avoid slip. For the filtration of disturbance procured during running of vehicle, the kalman filter is applied to estimate the actual signal on preferered samples of creep co-efficient for observing the applied attitude of noise. Thus error level is detected on higher and lower co-efficient of creep to analyze adhesion to avoid slip and sliding. The skidding is usually occurred due to higher forward speed owing to procured disturbance. This paper guides to minimize the noise and error based upon creep coefficient.

Comparative studies of gasification potential of agro-waste with wood and their characterization

  • In this work, an experimental study of the gasification on wood was carried out in downdraft type fixed bed Gasifier attached with 10 kW duel fuel diesel engine. The main objective of the study was to use wood as the biomass fuel for downdraft Gasifier and to evaluate the operating parameter of gasifier unit to predict its performance in terms of gas yield and cold gas efficiency. The influence of different biomass on fuel consumption rate, gas yield and cold gas efficiency was studied. Composition of producer gas was also detected for measuring the lower heating value of producer gas to select the feed stock so that optimum performance in the existing gasifier unit can be achieved. Under the experimental conditions, Lower heating value, of producer gas, cold gas efficiency and gas yields, using wood as a feed stock, are $4.85MJ/m^3$, 46.57% and $0.519m^3/kg$.

Mass transfer in the filtration membrane covering from macroscale, multiscale to nanoscale

  • The analytical results are presented for the mass transfer in a cylindrical pore covering from the macroscale, multiscale to nanoscale owing to the variation of the inner diameter of the pore. When the thickness hbf of the physically adsorbed layer potentially fully formed on the pore wall is comparable to but less than the inner radius R0 of the pore, the multiscale flow occurs consisting of both the nanoscale non-continuum adsorbed layer flow and the macroscopic continuum liquid flow; When R0 ≤ hbf, the flow in the whole pore is essentially non-continuum; When R0 is far greater than hbf, the flow in the whole pore can be considered as macroscopic and continuum and the adsorbed layer effect is negligible.

  • Oil contained in domestic and industrial wastewater or marine spilled oil gives rise to severe environmental pollution issues such as water pollution and ecosystem destruction. The membrane filtration method as one of representative oil/water separation strategies has technological challenges such as membrane fouling and low separation rate. In this work, we devise a 3D-printed microhydrocyclone for oil/water separation by utilizing a digital lighting processing-based 3D printer. We demonstrate that the 3D-printed microhydrocyclone can effectively separate oil and water phases from oil-in-water emulsion.

  • As the conference result of MEPC in IMO, development of ballast water management system corresponding to newly established ballast water management standard (D2 regulation) of shipping is being made an active progress over the whole world. The ballast water management system should treat particular material of more than $10{\mu}m$ in high capacity of more than 500t per hour in the event of filtration process. Also, it is very difficult to develop a practical management system since a limited element which a narrow space of the ship should be designed in the minimal volume is assumed. Therefore, the study promoted a study on the next generation auto back wash media filter to overcome such a limited element. Also, the study performed pressure and flux measurement test followed by thickness of each filter medium for filtration by each size to grasp a relation between absorption and pressure at the time of vacuum filtration and mechanical analysis and turbidity change observation of filtered water after vacuum filtration.

A study for High Efficiency Dewatering of Sludge Contained Fine Particles (미세입자(微細粒子)를 함유(含有)한 슬러지의 고효율(高效率) 탈수(脫水) 연구)

  • There was some difficulty dewatering properties due to small porosity diameter of cake, when pigment sludge contained fine particle was formed by cake under the dewatering. It was difficult to dewater the sludge with fine particles with the conventional mechanical dewatering method. This study was to improve the dewatering rate as discharging the water from porosity of cake easily, supplying the low heat to the cake layer. Thermal dewatering equipment of piston type to keep up constant temperature on the cake was set up and relative experiment was conducted for sludge of 200 g with fine pigment particle. As test results. filtration of 176.8 g, cake weight of 19.4 g, cake thickness of 4.2 mm was measured, and it was analyzed that the water content of cake was 47 wt% and dewatering velocity, which moaned the residual d교 sloid amount per dewatering area, was $2.1DS\;m^{2}{\cdot}cycle$. This results showed that filtration increased, cake weight and thickness decreased and dewatering velocity increased against mechanical dewatering method. And water content of cake decreased about 30%, so the result which dewatering rate improved was drew generally. The reason is that the inner vapor pressure working at the cake porosity increased as applying the low heat to the cake layer, which lead to discharge the water from porosity easily. Therefore, this study was estimated by the useful technology for sludge reduction.

Study on Microbiochip for Buccal Cell Lysis and DNA Purification (상피세포 시료 전처리용 마이크로바이오칩에 관한 연구)

  • This paper describes a separable microfluidic device fabricated with PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) and glass. The device is used for sample preparation involving cell lysis and the DNA purification process. The cell lysis was performed for 2 min at $80^{\circ}C$ in a serpentine-type microreactor ($20 {\mu}l$) using a Au microheater that was integrated with a thermal microsensor on a glass substrate. The DNA that was mixed with other residual products during the cell lysis process was then filtered through a new filtration system composed of microbeads (diameter: $50 {\mu}m$) and PDMS pillars. Since the entire process (sample loading, cell lysis reaction, DNA purification, and sample extraction) was performed within 5 min in a microchip, we could reduce the sample preparation time in comparison with that for the conventional methods used in biochemistry laboratories. Finally, we verified the performance of the sample preparation chip by conducting PCR (polymerase chain reaction) analysis of the chip product.

The Transient Response Characteristics of Compliant Coating to Pressure Fluctuations

  • The amplitude and phase lag of surface deformation were determined for a compliant coating under the action of turbulent pressure fluctuations. For this purpose, pressure fluctuations were measured experimentally. The amplitude and duration of coherent wave train of pressure fluctuations were investigated using digital filtration. The transient response was calculated for stabilization of forced oscillations of the coating in approximation of local deformation. The response of coating was analyzed with considerations of its inertial properties and limited duration of coherent harmonics action of pressure fluctuations. It is shown that a compliant coating interacts not with the whole spectrum of pressure fluctuations, but only with a frequency range near the first resonance. According to the analysis, with increasing elasticity modulus of the coating material E, deformation amplitude decreases as 1/E, and dimensionless velocity of the coating surface decreases as $1/\sqrt{E}$. For sufficiently hard coatings, deformation amplitude becomes smaller than the thickness of viscous sublayer, while surface velocity remains comparable to vertical velocity fluctuations of the flow.
