Mixed-Mode Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior of Cracks in Mechanical Joints Considering Critical Inclined Angle (임계 경사각을 고려한 기계적 체결부 균열의 혼합모드 피로균열성장 거동)

  • Cracks in mechanical joints is generally under mixed-mode and there is the critical inclined angle at which mode I stress intensity factor becomes maximum. In order to evaluate the fatigue life of cracks in mechanical joints, horizontal crack normal to the applied load and located on minimum cross section is major concern but critical inclined crack must also be considered. In this paper mixed-mode fatigue crack growth test is performed for horizontal crack and critical inclined crack in mechanical joints. Fatigue crack growth path is predicted by maximum tangential stress criterion using mode I and mode II stress intensity factors obtained from weight function method, and fatigue crack growth rates of horizontal and inclined crack are compared.

Fatigue Strength Evaluation of Adhesive Bonded and Mechanical Pressed Joints of Cold Rolled Steel Sheet (냉간압연강판 접착 및 기계적 프레스 접합부의 피로강도 평가)

  • The tensile and fatigue experiments were conducted with tensile-shear specimens for investigating the strength of adhesive bonded and mechanical press joints of SPCC steel sheet used in the field of the automobile industry. The optimal punch press force was evaluated 50kN for combining epoxy adhesive bonding and mechanical press joining with a diameter of 8.3mm using SPCC sheet with a thickness of 0.8mm. The combining epoxy adhesive bonding and mechanical press joining exhibits the maximum tensile force of 750N. The fatigue strengths of the combination of adhesive bond and mechanical press joint and pure adhesive joint were evaluated 370N and 320N at 106cycles, respectively. These values correspond to 22% and 20% of their maximum tensile forces, respectively. However, the fatigue strength of the combination of adhesive bond and mechanical press joining was much lower than that of pure mechanical press joining.

  • Owing to the high specific strength and stiffness of composite materials, they are extensively used in mechanical systems and in vehicle industries. However, most mechanical structures experience repeated load and fatigue. Therefore, it is important to perform fatigue analysis of fiber-reinforced composites. The properties of composite laminates vary depending upon the stacking sequence and stacking direction. Fatigue damage of composite laminates occurs according to the following sequence: matrix cracking, delamination, and fiber breakage. In this study, fatigue tests were performed for damage analysis. Fatigue damages, which have to be considered in fatigue analysis, are determined by using the stiffness values calculated from hysteresis loops, and the obtained fatigue damage curve is examined using Mao's equation and Abdelal's equation.

  • The influence of the fatigue crack propagation by shot peening was studied in this paper. Fatigue tests were carried out on the unpeened and shot peened CT specimens. The changes of mechanical properties, residual stress, fatigue fracture surface etc. by shot peening were investigated. The mechanical properties, residual stress, fatigue surface etc. by shot peening were investigated. The mechanical peened specimen improved in fatigue life up to 14% by shot peening. The reason of increase in the fatigue life was closely related with the compressive residual stress, which was 519.7MPa on surface. Another reason was the constraint on crack opening on surface region, it is due to the decrease in slope of crack propagation direction.

The crack propagates in arbitrary direction and thus the prediction of crack growth path is needed to provide against crack propagation or examine safety. In order to evaluate the fatigue life of cracks in mechanical joints, horizontal crack normal to the applied load and located on minimum cross section is major concern but critical inclined crack must also be considered. In this paper mixed-mode fatigue crack growth test is performed far horizontal crack and critical inclined crack in mechanical joints.   • The fatigue behaviour of six different hollow section T-joints subjected to out-of-plane bending moment was investigated experimentally using scaled steel models. The joints had circular brace members and rectangular chord members. Hot spot stresses and the stress concentration factors. (SCFs) were determined experimentally. Fatigue testing was carried out under constant amplitude loading in air. The test results have been statistically evaluated, and show that the experimental SCF values for circular-to-rectangular (CHS-to-RHS) hollow section joints were found to be below those of circular-to-circular (CHS-to-CHS) hollow section joints. The fatigue strength, referred to experimental hot spot stress, was in reasonably good agreement with referred fatigue design codes for tubular joints.

  • The use of fracture mechanics has traditionally concentrated on crack growth under an opening mechanism. However, many service failures occur from cracks subjected to mixed-mode loading. Hence, it is necessary to evaluate the fatigue behavior under mixed-mode loading. Under mixed-mode loading, not only the fatigue crack propagation rate is of importance, but also the crack propagation direction. In modified range 0.3$\leq$a/W$\leq$0.5, the stress intensity factors (SIFs) of mode I and mode II for the compact tension shear (CTS) specimen were calculated by using elastic finite element analysis. The propagation behavior of the fatigue cracks of cold rolled stainless steels (STS304) under mixed-mode conditions was evaluated by using K$\_$I/ and $_{4}$ (SIFs of mode I and mode II). The maximum tangential stress (MTS) criterion and stress intensity factor were applied to predict the crack propagation direction and the propagation behavior of fatigue cracks.

Fatigue life enhancement of defective structures by bonded repairs

  • Defective metallic components and structures are being repaired with bonded composite patches to improve overall mechanical and fatigue properties. In this study, fatigue crack growth tests were conducted on pre-cracked 7075/T6 Aluminum substrates with and without bonded Boron/epoxy patches. A considerable increase in the fatigue life and a decrease in the stress intensity factor (SIF) were observed as the number of patch plies increased. The experimental results demonstrate that the patch configurations and patch thickness can enhance fatigue life by order of magnitude. Quantitative comparisons between analytical and experimental data were made, and the analytical model based on a modified Rose's analytical solution appears to best estimate the fatigue life.

  • In this study, fatigue tests were performed to examine the effects of micro drill hole on fatigue limit of as cast and austempered ductile cast iron (ADI) using the rotary bending fatigue tester. As results, micro drill holes ($diameter{\leq}0.4mm$) did not influence the fatigue limit of ADI, compared to annealed ductile cast iron; the critical defect size of crack initiation, in ADI was larger than as cast. If the ${\sqrt{area}}$ of micro drill hole and graphite nodule in ADI are comparable, crack initiates at the graphite nodule. When the ruggedness developes through austempering treatment process, microstructure on crack initiation at micro drill hole is tougher than that of as cast ductile cast iron.
