  • The Army's engineers are carrying out a range of operations using various equipment, of which, artillery unit support is the representative engineering operation field. The main task of the artillery unit is to attack the enemy's center with firepower from the rear of a friendly force. The artillery must move its original position after firing several times to prevent exposure of the shooting position. This paper proposed a mathematical model and heuristic algorithm that can be used to determine the optimal allocation among engineer equipment, the team (work), and position while reflecting the constraints of the construction of an artillery position. The model proposed in this paper derived the optimal solution for the small size problems, but it takes a long time to derive the optimal solution for the problem of equipment placement of the engineer battalion and brigade scale. Although the heuristic suggested in this study does not guarantee the optimal solution, the solution could be obtained in a reasonable amount of time.

  • This research aims to design on an automatic machine vision system to replace eye inspection of alternator spool which is one of the key automotive parts. The alternator spool, plastic extrusion part would have various defects like unfinished, crack and burr. Through the design failure examples the optimized fast machine vision system will be designed to inspect all spools also focuses on the low cost machine for the middle sized company as 2'nd automotive supplier. 3-dimensional design softwares of Pro-Engineer & CATIA were used and the system were built based on the design. The system will contribute to satisfy the cycle time and can inspect each part in an absolutely accurate method, which is sufficient for industrial applications.

  • This study is to develop a automatic design program of mechanical elements as the integrated system which can create automatically 3-dimensional solid and surface model using visualLISP. By the applying developed system to CAE system, the following objects are realized. At first, constructing the library of automatic design program for unexperienced design engineer, the 3-dimensional modeling of mechanical elements can be obtained easily. at second, the 3-dimensional model for ratchet wheel design is created by finete element model of CAE system and the optimal design condition of key way.

  • In the surface grinding operations, the grinding fluid cannot be supplied sufficiently in the cutting zone. Temperature generated in the cutting zone increases rapidly and causes thermal damage such as burning on the surface of a workpiece. To reduce thermal damage, the intermittent grinding wheels, which have an excellent cooling effect, have been applied. This paper describes machining characteristics by using intermittent grinding wheels. The grinding force of the intermittent wheels has been simulated by the SIMULAB, which is a program for simulating dynamic systems. Using the intermittent grinding wheels, the characteristics of grinding force, temperature, surface roughness, and geometric error have been evaluated experimently.

  • This paper introduces DS/Block-Structure - a structural analysis module of DS/Block, which is a Design System to simulate the behavior of a ship block in various crane operations and to evaluate its structural deformation using the finite element method. It runs based on a CAD program, Pro/ENGINEER, and structural analyses are performed by a developed FE code. Boundary conditions for the FE analysis of a ship block under lifting and turnover operation are also considered.

  • As the preliminary works for the preparation of exfoliated nanocomposites by reactive extrusion (REX) the modified anionic polymerization proceeded in a flask using an $\varepsilon$-caprolactam, catalyst, initiator, and clay. Polymerization methods were classified with a variation of the clay adding time. Intercalations mechanism of clay layers was investigated by measuring the WAXD peaks of clay with polymerization. In the preparation of nanocomposites, the molecular weight of nylon 6 was affected by the clay content. From the mechanical property measurement, improved properties were obtained in comparison to the neat nylon 6, and these properties were also affected by the molecular weight.

  • Under the current wave of globalization, engineering programs in Korea are determined to adopt an Accreditation System for Engineering Education, which is inevitable to acquire competitiveness in the world market. To meet the needs of engineering students to pursue their career as internationally qualified engineer, a development of tailored English course for them is needed. I tried to develop a Technical English syllubus as an ESP(English for specific purpose) course for engineering students based on the job description provided by O'NET(Occupational Information Network). O'NET describes and defines what kinds of abilities are needed for various workers, including engineers. Mechanical Engineer type is selected for research and 17 abilities are listed to be the most needed abilities which are over 50% in importance score and 6 language related abilities are listed among them, which shows the importance of language abilities in the engineering job sites.

  • For the pleasant dwelling place, the most of apartments are designed with the increased green area ratio in ground space and the underground parking lot. However, the condensation in underground space has occasionally occurred due to the insufficient ventilation and insulation treatment. Despite reinforcement of the insulation treatment and mechanical ventilation for the preventing method of condensation. It seems difficult to expect preventing effects for the condensation without consideration of the thermal characteristic of structures. Furthermore, no fundamental measure has been established because maintenance work for these defects incurs a lot of costs and these defects could be occurred again. This study suggests a new method for preventing floor surface condensation through analyzing the reasons of condensation which occurred in the underground floor.

  • Although issuing change orders is a common practice in the construction phase of any project, non-structural utility subcontractors are struggling and seek to find a way to reduce change orders. Therefore, this paper presents the analysis results on change orders to cultivate possible suggestions and solutions on how to reduce or minimize change orders in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) works. Change orders in non-structural utility works are analyzed based on six categories such as rerouting and change of location, changes in weight, rejected design by Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development, District Structural Engineer, or the Structural Engineer of Record, unforeseen conditions, changed equipment, and owner-initiated change. The analysis findings showed that rerouting and changing location is the most significant cause, followed by unforeseen conditions. The results not only contribute to the existing body of knowledge on change order research area, but also help MEP contractors reduce the time and cost of change orders.

  • Recently, the demand for Building Information Modeling (BIM) construction drawings and specifications has increased rapidly. Many countries have also started to implement BIM. The BIM implementation can change the design flow of buildings including high-rise buildings. Against this background, many companies are focusing on the development of BIM software. BIM involves a three-dimensional CAD program that can examine the placement of ductwork and machinery. It significantly increases the efficiency of a mechanical design through data unification using standard Industry Foundation Classes (IFC). In addition, BIM functions as a database to simplify the use of simulation technology for designing air-conditioning systems. To further develop BIM, it is important to know the expectations of mechanical engineers who will become frequent users of BIM in the future. A survey was conducted among Japanese mechanical engineers using a questionnaire to analyze the expectations of mechanical design using BIM. The results show that many respondents strongly recognize BIM as a three-dimensional CAD program. However they also expect that BIM can help the optimization of their design works and enhance design functionality by running simulations utilizing BIM.
