  • To improve the performance of a bent-axis type axial piston pump driven by the tapered pistons, it is necessary to know the pressure ripple characteristics. The purpose of this paper is to understand the effect on the pressure ripple characteristics and the prediction by comparing experimental and theoretical results. The simulation model of the bent-axis type axial piston pump is developed in the AMESim environment using the geometrical dimension and the driving mechanism of the piston pump. The results can be obtained to predict the performance characteristics of the bent-axis type axial piston pump.

  • Bladed disk (BLISK) is a vital part in jet engines with a complicated shape which is exclusively machined on a five-axis machine and requires high accuracy of machining. Poor quality of tool orientation (e.g., false tool positioning and unsmooth tool orientation transition) during the five-axis machining may cause collision and machine vibration, which will debase the machining quality and in the worst case sabotage the BLISK. This paper presents a reference plane based algorithm to generate a set of smoothly aligned tool orientations along a tool path. The proposed method guarantees that no collision would occur anywhere along the tool path, and the overall smoothness is globally optimized. A preliminary simulation verification of the proposed algorithm is conducted on a BLISK model and the tool orientation generated is found to be stable, smooth, and well-formed.

  • This paper describes the surface form measurement of a spherical smooth surface by using single shot off-axis Fizeau interferometry. The demodulated phase map is obtained and unwrapped to remove the $2\pi$ ambiguity. The unwrapped phase map is converted to height and the 3D surface height of the surface object is reconstructed. The results extracted from the single shot off-axis geometry are compared with the results extracted from four-frame phase shifting in-line interferometry, and the results are in excellent agreement.

  • We describe, throughout a Mach-Zehnder interferometric configuration, a new test sieves calibration method based on off-axis digital holography. The experiment is conducted on a test sieve of square openings. The nominal sieve opening is 1.00 mm with maximum individual opening of 1.14 mm in size. The recorded off-axis hologram is numerically processed using Fresnel transforms to obtain an object wave (amplitude and phase). From the reconstructed phase, the average size of the illuminated openings has been measured precisely. The proposed method can provide a real time solution for calibrating test sieves very precisely and with moderate accuracy.

  • In this paper, the design result of robotic tools and the development of robot control system for chemical coupler assembly are presented. This research aims to eliminate the risk of chemicals exposed to human operators by developing the robotic tools and robot automation system for chemical tank lorry unloading that were done manually. Due to tight tolerance between couplers, even small pose error may result in very large internal force. In order to resolve the problem, the 6-axis compliance device is employed, which can provide not only enough compliance between couplers but also F/T sensing. The 6-axis compliance device having large force and moment capacity is designed. A simple linear gripper with rack-and-pinion is designed to grasp two sizes of couplers. The proposed robot automation system consists of 6-DOF collaborative robot with offset wrist, 6-axis compliance device with F/T sensing, linear gripper, and two robot visions.

  • Purpose: We investigated a statistical difference of tibial-articular surface (TAS) angles between radiographs of standing ankle anteroposterior (AP) and whole lower extremity view, and evaluated whether the tibial axis obtained from the standing ankle AP view reflects the original mechanical axis of lower extremity. Materials and Methods: Both the standing ankle AP and whole lower extremity view were taken from 60 legs of 30 healthy volunteers without a history of ankle surgery or deformity of lower limb. To determine the tibial axis, Takakura's and Hintermann's method were employed in the standing ankle AP view. To compare these results with the original TAS angle, ANOVA and multiple comparison test were used. Results: The mean TAS angle was 88.3 degrees(from hip joint to ankle), 89.5 degrees (from knee joint to ankle), 88.5 degrees (Takakura's method), and 90.2 degrees(Hintermann's method). Although there was a statistical significance (p=0.000) between these results, Takakura's method had no significant difference, compared to the results of whole extremity view by the multiple comparison test. Conclusion: The tibial axis obtained by Takakura's method reflects the original mechanical axis of lower extremity. When a surgical procedure is planned, however, it is necessary to consider that the ankle radiographs do not provide any information on the proximal deformity without the whole lower extremity view.

  • In order to study the effects of oblique tabs on the in-plane shear properties of unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced aluminum laminate composites, the 10$^{\circ}$off-axis tensile test, the 45 $^{\circ}$off-axis tensile test and Iosipescu shear test were performed to determine the shear properties. Off-axis tension test was studied by using new oblique-shaped tabs proposed by Sun and $Chung^{(7)}$. Iosipescu shear test was studied by using modified Wyoming test fixture. The oblique tabs reduced remarkably end-constraint effects of off-axis specimens with a aspect ratio of about eight. The experimental results show that there is no significant difference between off-axis test results and those of Iosipescu shear test. The 45$^{\circ}$off-axis tensile tests are recommended for the determination of the shear properties of unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced aluminum laminated composites.

  • Shrink fitting is often a conventional mechanical fasteners and fastening methods with temperature difference. Localized heating of the material surface provides temporary expansion and allows slip fit assembly. The resulting interference fit exhibits exceptional strength without surface deformation at ambient temperatures. We studied an analysing method to find out a deformation of motor axis as variation of constrained method with shrink fitting.

  • This study deals with the machining of sculptured surfaces on 5-axis CNC milling machine with end mill cutter. The study (I) has the following contents. In 5-axis CNC milling, CL-data consist of CC-data and cutter axis direction vector at the CC-point. Thus, in machining of the sculptured surface on 5-axis CNC milling machine, determination of the direction vector of the milling cutter is very important. The direction vector is obtained by the fact that bottom plane of the milling cutter must not interfere with the free-form surface being machined. The interference is checked by the z-map method which can be applied in all geometric types of the sculptured surfaces. After generating NC part programs from 5-axis post-processing algorithms, sculptured surfaces were machined with 5-axis CNC milling machine (CINCINNATI MILACRON, 20V-80). From these machining tests, it was shown that the machining of the free-form surfaces on 5-axis CNC milling machine with the end mill has smaller cusp heights and shorter cutting time than on 3-axis CNC milling machine with the ball-end mill. Thus, 5-axis CNC end milling was effective machining method for sculptured surfaces. The study (II) deals with the prediction of cusp height and the determination of tool path interval for the 5-axis machining of sculptured surfaces on the basis of study(I).

  • This study deals with the structural optimization of hybrid vertical-axis wind turbine blades using a response surface method (RSM). The structural analysis results suggest that the stress of hybrid vertical-axis wind turbine blades exceeds the yield strength. Optimization techniques are then applied to structural design to ensure a safe structure. First, the design factors that strongly influence the structural response are identified. The RSM was applied based on the design of experiments. The objective function and constraint terms set the weight and allowable stress, respectively. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis was conducted to indicate the effects of the design factors on the stress and weight. Finally, structural design was performed for the hybrid vertical-axis wind turbine blade.
