Safety-critical navigation systems have to provide 'reliable' position solutions, i.e., they must detect and exclude measurement or system faults and estimate the uncertainty of the solution. To obtain more accurate and reliable navigation systems, various filtering methods have been employed to reduce measurement noise level, or integrate sensors, such as global navigation satellite system/inertial navigation system (GNSS/INS) integration. Recently, particle filters have attracted attention, because they can deal with nonlinear/non-Gaussian systems. In most GNSS applications, the GNSS measurement noise is assumed to follow a Gaussian distribution, but this is not true. Therefore, we have proposed a fault detection and exclusion method using particle filters assuming non-Gaussian measurement noise. The performance of our method was contrasted with that of conventional Kalman filter methods with an assumed Gaussian noise. Since the Kalman filters presume that measurement noise follows a Gaussian distribution, they used an overbounded standard deviation to represent the measurement noise distribution, and since the overbound standard deviations were too conservative compared to the actual distributions, this degraded the integrity-monitoring performance of the filters. A simulation was performed to show the improvement in performance of our proposed particle filter method by not using the sigma overbounding. The results show that our method could detect smaller measurement biases and reduced the protection level by 30% versus the Kalman filter method based on an overbound sigma, which motivates us to use an actual noise model instead of the overbounding or improve the overbounding methods.
In this study, the effects of embedded optical fibers on the static properties under tensile load and dynamic properties under fatigue load of composite laminates were investigated by experimental tests and finite element analysis. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the embedded optical fiber sensors do not have significant effects on the structural integrity of the smart composite structures except when the sensors are embedded perpendicular to the adjacent reinforcing fibers under fatigue loading. An intensity-based optical fiber sensor was embedded in the crossply composite laminates to monitor the fatigue damage by detecting the stiffness changes of the laminates. The result of this experiment has shown that the intensity-based optical fiber sensor has large potential to monitor the fatigue damage of composite structures by detecting the stiffness changes of the structures with simple and inexpensive instruments and without complex post-processing of measured signals. In addition, the optical fiber sensor showed good resistance to fatigue loading and wide sensing ranges of stiffness.

A spacer grid assembly is one of the most important structural components of the nuclear fuel assembly of a pressurized water reactor (PWR), and it affects the performance of the fuel assembly. The primary design requirement is that the mechanical integrity of the fuel rod should be maintained by the spacer grid assembly during the operation of the reactor. It was known that fretting damage to the fuel rod can be reduced by adjusting the relative moving displacement between the fuel rod and its support. In this study, we used the finite element method to evaluate the characteristics of a sliding support designed to reduce fretting damage of fuel rods.
Pyrotechnic separation devices have been widely used as holding and release mechanism for deployable appendage. However, pyro-shock can cause temporal or permanent damage on shock sensitive components such as electronics, mechanism, and brittle components. This study proposed a low-stiffness blade based passive shock absorber using a multi-layered stiffener laminated with viscoelastic acrylic tapes for reducing transmitted pyro-shock upon explosion of pyrotechnic separation devices. The multi-layered structure with viscoelastic tape has high-damping characteristics to effectively secure structural integrity of low-stiffness blades under the launch environment. The design effectiveness was verified through a shock test by dropping a pendulum. The structural integrity of the shock absorber under a launch environment was evaluated through structural analysis under load conditions with a deployable payload.
In order to guarantee the safety of the facility systems, one of the essential components is information on mechanical properties of materials used for the construction. However, acquisition or accumulation of the mechanical property data in industrial fields is limited because this operation does not yield profit, excepting few materials production companies. Corresponding to the urgent needs and poor economical features, the MOCIE has founded the National Center for Standard Reference Data in the KRISS and also designated the Data Center of Mechanical Properties for Metallic Materials (DCMP) as a principal operating section. The DCMP plays roles of collection, edition and evaluation of the mechanical data and development of reference standards. In this study, several functions of the DCMP and standardization procedures of mechanical properties data will be introduced the prospective of standard reference researches will be discussed based on active feedbacks from industrial fields.

Most manufacturing processes such as welding, cutting and molding generate residual stresses on the surface of manufactured parts. Tensile residual stress is harmful to the surface integrity, which results in reduced fatigue life and causes other structural failures when the service stresses are superimposed on the residual stresses. In the research, the residual stresses of the high hardness steel (over $H_{RC}60$) workpiece (SKD11) machined by the hard turning were measured using Hole-drilling Method. Residual stress in the surface of hard turned workpiece was mainly appeared to be compressive stress.
Structural integrity of either a passenger car or a light truck is one of the basic requirements for a full vehicle engineering and development program. The results of the vehicle product performance are measured in terms of ride and handling, durability, noise/vibration/harshness (NVH), crashworthiness and occupant safety. The level of performance of a vehicle directly affects the marketability, profitability and, most importantly, the future of the automobile manufacturer In this study, we used the virtual proving ground (VPG) approach for obtaining the dynamic characteristics. The VPG approach uses a nonlinear dynamic finite element code (LS-DYNA3D) which expands the application boundary outside the classic linear static assumptions. The VPG approach also uses realistic boundary conditions of tire/road surface interactions. To verify the predicted dynamic results, a single lane change test has been performed. The prediction results were compared with the experimental results, and the feasibility of the integrated CAE analysis methodology was verified.

For integrity evaluation of cracked or damaged structures, fracture toughness test results in ASTM are widely used. The fracture toughness values of the structures are used as an effective design criterion in nuclear plants and aircraft structures. Sometimes the difference of P-$\delta$ curve trend during the unloading /reloading cycle in the fracture toughness test using partial unloading compliance was observed. The phenomenon as a possible source of error in determining fracture toughness may be caused by the residual stress during unloading work-hardening and bucking of a specimen. Therefore, we evaluate the effect of bucking and compressive residual stress during the K-R and J-R testing using a finite element method.
A newly developed Advanced Indentation System (AIS), which is a portable and nondestructive system for evaluating tensile properties, was used to measure mechanical behavior of materials used under high temperature and pressure conditions. This test measures indentation load-depth curve during indentation and analyzes the mechanical properties related to deformation and fracture. Aging effects of Cr-Mo and Cr-Mo-V steel at high temperature were simulated. Tensile properties including yield strength and tensile strength at various temperature are obtained from the test. For all test materials and conditions, the AIS-derived results were in good agreement with those from conventional standard test method. Examples of the test results ate given and potential applications of the AIS to assess the integrity of aging structures are briefly discussed.

An active trailing-edge flap blade named as Seoul National University Flap (SNUF) blade is designed for reducing helicopter vibratory loads and the relevant aeroacoustic noise. Unlike the conventional rotor control, which is restricted to 1/rev frequency, an active control device like the present trailing-edge flap is capable of actuating each individual blade at higher harmonic frequencies i.e., higher harmonic control (HHC) of rotor. The proposed blade is a small scale blade and rotates at higher RPM. The flap actuation components are located inside the blade and additional structures are included for reinforcement. Initially, the blade cross-section design is determined. The aerodynamic loads are predicted using a comprehensive rotorcraft analysis code. The structural integrity of the active blade is verified using a stress-strain recovery analysis.
