  • A linearly tapered beam immersed partially in other material is considered and is modelled as a linearly tapered Bernoulli-Euler beam fixed at the bottom with a concentrated mass at the top. Its governing equations is derived and its free vibration analysis is performed for various boundary conditions. And the rotatory inertia of the eccentric lumped tip mass is considered. (omitted)

  • A computer aided design of a Stephenson type of Chained six-link mechanism with synthesis equations of the precision positions technigue to generate a required point path is presented. Analysis of this mechanism is carried out by the matrix method. The torque on the input link required to operate the mechanism was obtained by considering inertia and gravity forces of the coupler link.

  • This paper describes the evaluation of a force-reflecting interface with ultrasonic motors(USMs). The force-reflecting interface allows a human to feel object within virtual environment. To effectively display the mechanical impedance of the human hand we need a haptic device with specific characteristics, such as low inertia, almost zero friction and very high stiffness. USMs have attracted considerable attention as the actuator satisfied these conditions. USMs combine features such as high driving torque at low rotational speed, high holding torque and fast response therefore we studied two degree of freedom force-reflecting haptic system.

  • switched reluctance motors and drives are increasingly used in industrial applications due to their robust mechanical structure, low inertia and reduction in the rotor losses. As the motor speed increase turn on angle must be advanced to build up phase current. When C-dump converter is applied to switched reluctance motor, the capacitance of dump C has to have proper value. In this paper advance angle for a switched reluctance motor and capacitance of dump C are investigated. Then proper advance angle and the capacitance of dump-C are propose for the industrial low voltage SR motor.

  • Based on a field-oriented model of induction motor, adaptive backstepping approach using neural network(RBFN) is proposed for the control of induction motor in this paper. In order to achieve the speed regulation with the consideration of avoiding singularity and improving power efficiency, rotor angular speed and flux amplitude tracking objectives are formulated. rotor resistance uncertainty is compensated by adaptive backstepping and mechanical lumped uncertainty such as load torque disturbance, inertia moment, friction by RBFN. Simulation is provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

  • This paper presents a design methodology for improving the energy efficiency by considering the inertial properties of serial manipulators. This method employed is to put the inertia matrix, which has a critical effect on the equation of motion, into the constraints of the optimization problem. Through the optimization process, we propose a design algorithm that can double-check whether the optimized parameters satisfy the required performance or not by using an auxiliary index associated with the inertia and energy. Using this design algorithm, we were able to improve the energy efficiency by minimizing the torque. We applied this method to a 3 degrees of freedom serial manipulator and simulated it.

  • This study characterizes the coastdown performances of two small electric motors supported on high-speed ball bearings (BBs) and gas foil bearings (GFBs), and it predicts their acceleration performances. The two motors have identical permanent magnetic rotors and mating stators. However, the shaft of the GFBs has a larger mass and polar/transverse moments of inertia than that of the BBs. Motor coastdown tests demonstrate that the rotor speed decreases linearly with the BBs and nonlinearly with the GFBs. A simple model for the BBs predicts a constant drag torque and linear decay of speed with time. The test data validate the model predictions. For the GFBs, the hydrodynamic lubrication model predictions reveal that the drag torque increases linearly with speed, and the speed decreases exponentially with time. The predictions agree very well with the test data in the speed range of 100-30 krpm. The boundary lubrication model predicts a constant drag torque and linear decay of speed with time. The predictions agree well with the test data below 15 krpm. Mixed lubrication occurs in the speed range of 30-15 krpm. Rotor acceleration performances are predicted based on the characteristics of deceleration performances. The GFBs require more time to reach 100,000 krpm than the BBs because of their larger shaft polar moment of inertia. However, predictions for the assumed identical polar moment of inertia reveal that the GFBs have a nearly identical acceleration performance to that of the BBs with a motor torque greater than $0.03N{\cdot}m$.

  • The importance of engine vibration reduction is increasing as the vehicle interior noise becomes more serious due to higher output and lighten weight trends. Recently, the balance shaft attachment has been proposed as a representative method for the engine vibration reduction. The balance shaft is a device that cancels the vibrations generated in the reciprocating motion of the piston and the conrod by using an arbitrary eccentric mass, and can improve fuel efficiency and ride comfort at the same time. This paper proposes the unbalance amount and shape of the balance shaft to induce and offset the inertia force generated by the engine structure. The proposed two-shaped balance shaft was implemented as an ADAMS multi-body dynamics model, and the reduction of the inertial force in the actual behavior was confirmed through dynamic simulation.

  • Large-capacity of household washing machine can become unbalanced during the dehydration process. To solve this problem, several types of suspensions have been installed in a washing machine. In this study, physical tests were carried out on a frictional suspension, and the nonlinear characteristics were modeled by combining several simple physical models. The parameters were estimated based on the least squares solution. The simulation and test results were compared to verify the validity of the friction damper model.
