  • Hydrolysis resistance and mechanical property changes of polyketone (POK)/glass fiber (GF) composites were investigated for GF concentrations varying between 30 and 50%. The hydrolysis resistance of GF filled POK and polyamide66 (PA66, hydrolysis resistant grade) composites were compared. As shown by the experimental results, increasing the immersion time of the composites in a monoethylene glycol (MEG)/water solution at $120^{\circ}C$ had no impact or resulted in slightly decreased mechanical properties such as the tensile strength, tensile modulus, and strain at break in case of POK composites, whereas the mechanical properties of PA66 composites showed a significant drop. Increasing GF concentrations increased the tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength, and flexural modulus of POK composites; however, impact strength did not show significant changes. Hydrolysis mechanisms of POK and PA66 are discussed.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanical properties of three-dimensional (3D) printed denture base resin incorporating microcapsules containing plant essential oils. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Denture base specimens containing up to 3% w/v essential oil microcapsule powders (MCPs), i.e., eucalyptus, geranium, lavender, menthol, and tea tree, in two resins (Detax and NextDent 3D+) were 3D printed using two printers (Asiga and NextDent 5100). The dispersion and interaction of the MCPs in the resin were assessed by SEM while the mechanical properties of the incorporated denture base including flexural strength (MPa), flexural modulus (MPa), Vickers hardness (VHN), and surface roughness (Ra) were also subsequently evaluated. Statistical analysis of any differences in mean values was determined using a two-way ANOVA with Tukey's post hoc testing (α = .05). RESULTS. The spherical shape of the MCPs was maintained during the mixing and polymerization/printing process. However, the Detax-Asiga group showed significant agglomeration of the MCPs even at the lowest MCP concentration levels (0.5% w/v). Overall, as the microcapsule concentration increased, the mean flexural strength decreased, though the menthol MCP groups remained compliant with the ISO standard. The flexural modulus and harness remained relatively unchanged, and the flexural modulus complied with the ISO standard regardless of the MCP concentration. Surface roughness increased with the addition of the MCPs but also remained below that required for clinical acceptance. CONCLUSION. Incorporation of microencapsulated plant essential oils into 3D printed denture base resin was successfully achieved. While incorporation negatively influenced flexural strength and surface roughness, little effect on flexural modulus and Vickers hardness was demonstrated.

  • Vinyl ester (VE) resins, introduced in the late 1960s, have made large strides in reinforced plastics applications as adhesive and matrix materials on their appropriate mechanical performance characteristics in the glassy state. Generally, VE resins are a group of dimethacrylate resins based on bisphenol A type epoxy resin. They exhibit easy handling properties as well as good resistance to most chemical agents due to their mechanical and thermal properties. In this study, the effects of curing methods of vinyl ester resins on gel contents, flexural strength and dynamic mechanical properties were investigated. Thermal curing (room temperature, $80^{\circ}C$) and electron beam curing were used to crosslink a VE resin/styrene complex (65/35 wt%) with methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKPO) as a catalyst and an 8 wt% cobalt naphthenate in styrene solution as a accelerator. For the samples, gel contents as well as flexural strength and dynamic mechanical properties were characterized and compared by soxhlet apparatus, universal testing machine (UTM) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). As a result, the electron-cured VE resin was confirmed as a better condition than those for gel contents, flexural strength and dynamic mechanical properties, respectively.

  • In this study, two types of water-soluble sulfur, LSA and LSB, were developed and the influence of the water-soluble sulfur on the mechanical properties and durability of concrete were experimentally evaluated. In order to evaluate mechanical properties and carbonation resistance of concrete with water-soluble sulfur, compressive strength test, flexural strength test, bonding strength test, and carbonation resistance test were performed. Compressive strength of only concrete with 1% LSA was increased while that of concrete with LSB was proportionally increased with the higher LSB dosage. On the other hand, flexural strength of concrete with LSA and LSB was increased by 12-41% and 36-74%, respectively. Carbonation resistance of concrete with water-soluble sulfur were increased by 25-66%. As a result, it should be noted that the water-soluble sulfur can not only solve the demerit of sulfur concrete but also offer the durability of sulfur concrete.

  • Epoxy resin is a polar thermosetting polymer that is widely employed in different branches of industry and everyday life, due to their stable physical and chemical properties. Of all the polymer materials currently being used in the electrical insulation industry, epoxy resin is the most widely used kind, chosen as the base polymer material in the present study. Composites were prepared according to the mixing ratio (MS: MA, 1: 9, 3: 7, 5: 5, 7: 3, 9: 1)of mixture for Heterogeneous Minerals(Micro Silica:MS, Micro Alumina:MA) (MS+MA). We have investigated for AC electrical insulation breakdown characteristics and the dielectric properties (permittivity, dielectric loss, and conductivity) with frequency changes. The electrical AC insulation breakdown performance was improved with the increase of the mixing ratio of MS according to heterogeneous mineral material mixture(MS+MA). As Dielectric properties, the dielectric constant and dielectric loss increased with decreasing frequency and decreased with increasing MS content ratio of heterogeneous mineral mixture. Tensile strength and flexural strength according to the mixing ratio (MS + MA) of epoxy / heterogeneous mineral mixture were studied by mechanical properties. The performance of mechanical tensile and flexural strength was significantly improved as the fill contents ratio of MS increased.

  • The influence of liquefied wood (LW) on the mechanical and thermal properties of liquefied wood-polymer composites (LWPC) was investigated in this study. The thermal behaviors of LWPC were characterized by means of thermogravimetric (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) analyses. LW showed significant effects on the mechanical strength properties. The increase of flexural MOE and Young's modulus was related to the increase of stiffness of LWPC. The effect of LW was also significant on the flexural and tensile MOR. The impact strength decreased with the increase of LW application level. With the increased stress concentration by the poor bonding between LW and polymer, the impact strength of LWPC decreased, compared with that of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). The thermal stability of LWPC decreased with the increase of LW content up to 40%. The melting temperature of HDPE decreased with the increase of LW loading level. Enthalpy of HDPE also decreased with the addition of LW. This study proves the thermal stability necessary for the consolidation of composition materials.

  • The production of ultra-early-strength concrete (UESC) traditionally involves complexity or necessitates high-temperature curing conditions. However, this study aimed to achieve ultra-early-strength performance solely through room-temperature curing. Experimental results demonstrate that under room-temperature (28℃) curing conditions, the concrete attained compressive strengths of 20 MPa at 4 hours and 69.6 MPa at 24 hours. Additionally, it exhibited a flexural strength of 7.5 MPa after 24 hours. In contrast, conventional concrete typically reaches around 20.6 MPa (3,000 psi) after approximately 28 days, highlighting the rapid strength development of the UESC. This swift attainment of compressive strength represents a significant advancement for engineering purposes. Small amounts of steel fibers (0.5% and 1% by volume, respectively) were added to address potential concrete cracking due to early hydration heat and enhance mechanical properties. This allowed observation of the effects of different volume contents on ultra-early-strength fiber-reinforced concrete (UESFRC). Furthermore, the compressive strength of 0.5% and 1% UESFRC increased by 16.3% and 31.3%, respectively, while the flexural strength increased by 37.1% and 47.9%. Moreover, toughness increased by 58.2 and 69.7 times, respectively. These findings offer an effective solution for future emergency applications in public works.

  • In order to develop a high voltage insulation material, epoxy/micro-silica composites (EMC) and epoxy/micro-silica/nano-silica composites (EMNC) with three different particle sizes in ${\mu}m$ and one particle size in nm were prepared and their tensile and flexural tests were carried out and the data was estimated by Weibull statistical analysis. The tensile strength of the neat epoxy was 82.8 MPa and those of the EMCs were larger than that of the neat epoxy, and they were much more advanced by the addition of 10 nm sized nano-silica to the EMCs. Flexural strength showed the same tendency of the tensile strength. As the micro-particle size decreased, tensile and flexural strength increased.

  • Extensive experimental studies on remarkable mechanical properties Polypropylene Fibre Reinforced Self-compacting Concrete (PFRSCC) have been executed, including different fibre volume fractions of Polypropylene fibers (0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1%) and different water to cement ratios (0.21, 0.34, 0.38, and 0.41). The experimental program was carried out by using two hundred and sixteen specimens to obtain the impact resistance and mechanical properties of PFRSCC materials, considering compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexural strength. Statistical and analytical studies have been mainly focused on experimental data to correlate of mechanical properties of PFRSCC materials. Statistical results revealed that compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural strengths as well as impact resistance follow the normal distribution. Moreover, to correlate mechanical properties based on acquired test results, linear and nonlinear equations were developed among mechanical properties and impact resistance of PFRSCC materials.

  • In this study, 40, 50, 60, and 70 wt% filler dispersed samples were prepared for the current GIS Spacer or environmentally friendly GIS. In the AC electrical breakdown, EMSC and EMAC decreased with increasing filler content, and EMSC showed better breakdown strength than EMAC. The mechanical properties such as tensile strength and flexural strength of EMSC and EMAC were also increased with increasing filler content. In addition, EMSC results in better mechanical properties than EMAC. The reason for this is considered to be one in which the influence of the interface is important.
