  • This paper proposes the optimal placement with minimum set of Phasor Measurement Units (PMU's) using tabu search and makes an alternative plan to secure the robustness of the network with PMU's. The optimal PMU Placement (OPP) problem is generally expressed as a combinatorial optimization problem subjected to the observability constraints. Thus, it is necessary to make a use of an efficient method in solving the OPP problem. In this paper, a tabu search based approach to solve efficiently this OPP problem proposed. The observability of the network with PMU's is fragile at any single PMU contingency. To overcome the fragility, an alternative scheme that makes efficient use of the existing measurement system in power system state estimation proposed. The performance of the proposed approach and the alternative scheme is evaluated with IEEE sample systems.

  • In a multi-camera measurement system, the determination of the external parameters is one of the vital tasks, referred to as the calibration of the system. In this paper, a new geometrical calibration method, which is based on the theory of the vanishing line, is proposed. Using a planar target with three equally spaced parallel lines, the normal vector of the target plane can be confirmed easily in every camera coordinate system of the measurement system. By moving the target into more than two different positions, the rotation matrix can be determined from related theory, i.e., the expression of the same vector in different coordinate systems. Moreover, the translation matrix can be derived from the known distance between the adjacent parallel lines. In this paper, the main factors effecting the calibration are analyzed. Simulations show that the proposed method achieves robustness and accuracy. Experimental results show that the calibration can reach 1.25 mm with the range about 0.5m. Furthermore, this calibration method also can be used for auto-calibration of the multi-camera mefasurement system as the feature of parallels exists widely.

  • This paper proposes a robust discrete time Kalman filter (RDKF) for the dynamic compensation of nonlinearity in a homodyne laser interferometer for high-precision displacement measurement and in real-time. The interferometer system is modeled to reduce the calculation of the estimator. A regulator is applied to improve the robustness of the system. An estimator based on dynamic modeling and a zero regulator of the system was designed by the authors of this study. For real measurement, the experimental results show that the proposed interferometer system can be applied to high precision displacement measurement in real-time.

  • A simple computer vision technology to measure the middle-ranged depth with mono camera and plain mirror is proposed The proposed system is structured wiか the rotating mirror in front of the fixed mono camera In contrast to the previous stereo vision system in which the disparity of the closer object is larger than that of the distant object, the pixel movement caused by the rotating mirror is bigger for the pixels of the distant object in the proposed system Being inspired by such feature in the proposed system the principle of the depth measurement based on the relation of the pixel movement and the distance of object have been investigated. Also, the factors to influence the precision of the measurement are analysed The benefits of the proposed system are low price and less chance of occlusion. The robustness for practical usage is an additional benefit of the proposed vision system.

  • This paper proposes a modified recursive sliding DFT to measure the phase of a single-tone. The modification is to provide a self error-cancelling mechanism so that it can significantly reduce the numerical error, which is generally introduced and accumulated when a recursive algorithm is implemented in finite wordlength arithmetic. The phase measurement error is analytically derived to suggest optimized distributions of quantization bits. The analytic derivation and the robustness of the algorithm are also verified by computer simulations. It shows that the maximum phase error of less than $5{\times}10^{-2}$ radian is obtained even when the algorithm is coarsely implemented with 4-bit wordlength twiddle factors.

  • Typically electronic resistance type sensors have been used for measurement system of high-speed trains. But due to a large number of measurement quantities, we had difficulties in installing and maintaining the cables that connect sensors and measuring devices. Furthermore, signals obtained from the electronic resistance type sensors are often distorted because the sensors and cables are vulnerable to electro-magnetic interference (EMI). In this paper the characteristic of FBG sensors are compared with those of electronic resistance type sensors in application for the measurement system of high-speed trains. FBG sensors have advantages because of their multiplexing characteristic and robustness to EMI environment.

  • In the automatic non-invasive blood pressure measurement device, the oscillometric method iswidely used. In the oscillometric method, the step-wise deflation has the advantage of the robustness for the motion artifacts than the linear deflation method. But it has the disadvantage of its longer measurement time because we need to detect two or more pulses in a certain cuff pressure step. In this study, we suggest the modified step-wise deflation method to overcome this limitation while maintaining the general concept of step-wise deflation. Using one valid pulse in each step and the deflating valve control during the diastolic period, the measurement time could be reduced. In order to verify the accuracy of the proposed algorithm, we compared the blood pressure values from the suggested method and the blood pressure values from the conventional auscultation method. The mean and standard deviation were -0.50${\pm}$5.3mmHg and 2.08${\pm}$4.75mmHg, for systolic and diastolic blood pressure respectively. The measurement time can be reduced up to the half of conventional step-wise deflation method.

  • This paper describes a camera-based position measurement system for automatic tracking control of a rubber Tired Gantry Crane (RTGC). An automatic tracking control of RTGC depends on the ability to measure its displacement and angle from a guide line that the RTGC has to follow. The measurement system proposed in this paper is composed of a camera and a PC that are mounted on the right upper between front and rear tires of the RTGC's side. The measurement accuracy of the system is affected by disturbances such as cracks and stains of the guide line, shadows, and halation from the light fluctuation. To overcome the disturbances, both side edges of the guide line are detected as two straight lines from an input image taken by the camera, and parameters of the straight lines are determined by using Hough transform. The displacement and angle of the RTGC from the guide line can be obtained from these parameters with the robustness against the disturbances. From the experiments with the disturbances, we found the accurate displacement and the angle from the guide line that have the standard deviations of 0.95 pixels and 0.22 degrees, respectively.

  • The respiratory and heart beat signals are the fundamental physiological signals for sleep monitoring in the home. Using the air mattress sensor system, the respiration and heart beat movements can be measured without any harness or sensor on the subject's body which makes long term measurement difficult and troublesome. The differential measurement technique between two air cells is adopted to enhance the sensitivity. The concept of the balancing tube between two air cells is suggested to increase the robustness against postural changes during the measurement period. With this balancing tube, the meaningful frequency range could be selected by the pneumatic filter method. The mathematical model for the air mattress and balancing tube was suggested and the validation experiments were performed for step and sinusoidal input. The results show that the balancing tube can eliminate the low frequency component between two cells effectively. This technique was applied to measure the respiration and heart beat on the bed, which shows the potential applications for sleep monitoring device in home. With the analysis of the waveform, respiration intervals and heart beat intervals were calculated and compared with the signal from conventional methods. The results show that the measurement from air mattress with balancing tube can be used for monitoring respiration and heart beat in various situations.

  • The problem of sound source localization is to determine the position of sound sources using the measurement of the acoustic signals received by microphones. To develop a good sound source localization system which is applicable to a mobile platform such as robots, a time delay estimator with low computational complexity and robustness to background noise or reverberations is necessary. In this paper, an explicit adaptive time delay estimation method for a sound source localization system is proposed. Proposed explicit adaptive time estimation algorithm employs direct adaptation of the delay parameter using a transform-based optimization technique, rather than...
