Information Structure of Relative Clauses in English: a Flexible and Computationally Tractable Model

  • Relativization is one of the common syntactic operations to merge two different clauses into a single information unit. This operation plays a pivotal role to structuralize multiple clauses cohesively as well as serves to specify the property an individual has within the context. That implies that relativization contributes to information structure of multiclausal sentences. In this context, this paper delves into information structure of relative clauses in English with an eye toward creation of a computational model from a standpoint of machine translation. The current work employs Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG, Pollard and Sag (1994)) as a theory of grammar and Minimal Recursion Semantics (MRS, Copestake et al. (2005) as a meaning representation system. Building upon these formalisms, this paper addresses how information structure of relative clauses can be represented and constrained. The current work makes use of Individual CONStraints (ICONS) for modeling relative clauses with respect to information structure. The current work also investigates which relative clause involves which information structure constraint. The present study argues that non-restrictive relative clauses impose a more specific constraint on information structure than restrictive relative clauses.

『조선왕조실록』에 나타난 양생법 고찰 (An Analysis of Yangseng(養生) in 『The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty』)

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to analyze the frequency and contents of each 'Yangseng(養生)' category appeared in 『The Annals of Joseon Dynasty』, based on the Yangseng-related terms used in the records. Method : We selected 11 terms with the same meaning as 'Yangseng(養生)' and searched each of them on the website of the Annals of Joseon Dynasty online search service. Among the total of 679 records, 343 were classified into five categories: 'Mind Yangseng(精神養生)', 'Food Yangseng(飮食養生)', 'Doin-angyo(導引按蹻)', 'Lifestyle Yangseng(生活養生)', and 'Herb Yangseng(藥草養生)'. The contents and characteristics of each Yangseng category appeared in the 『The Annals of Joseon Dynasty』 were studied. Results : The term 'Jo-seop(調攝)' was most frequently used in the same meaning as Yangseng(養生), followed by 'Jo-ri(調理)', 'Jo-ho(調護)', 'Jo-yang(調養)', and 'Seop-yang(攝養)'. The frequency of records categorized into specific Yangseng methods(養生法) was in the order of 'Lifestyle Yangseng', 'Mind Yangseng', 'Food Yangseng', 'Herb Yangseng' and 'Doin-angyo(導引按蹻)'. The contents of 'Mind Yangseng' included 'control of emotions and thoughts', 'control of self-interest', 'emphasis on the cultivation of mind', and 'avoidance of stress'. The contents of 'Food Yangseng' were related to the amount of food intake and types of food. The contents of 'Lifestyle Yangseng' were related to 'work-rest balance(勞逸)', 'seasons(季節)', 'residence(居處)', 'bath(沐浴)', 'sexual life', 'sleep', and 'clothing'. The frequency of 'work-rest balance(勞逸)' was among the highest. Conclusion : Emphasis on mental health and work-rest balance appeared in 『The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty』 can have significant implications on people of today.

요양병원 근무한의사의 소진에 영향을 미치는 요인 - 광주.전남지역을 중심으로 - (A study on burn out of K.M.D.s (Korean medicine doctors) work at convalescent hospitals in Kwang-ju and Jeon-nam, Korea)

  • Objectives : This study was aimed to investigate burn out degree of K.M.D.s(Korean medicine doctors) who work at convalescent hospitals and to find contributional factors for the result. The relationship between burn out and job performance was also studied. Methods : 77 K.M.D.s(Male 49(63.6%), Female 28(36.4%)) participated in this survey that has 62 main questions about burn out, job performance, job environment and Social demographic characteristics. Survey was conducted from 19th Aug. 2013 to 6th Nov. 2013. Results : Average of burn out degree of K.M.D.s was 2.62 out of 5. Emotional exhaustion was highest (2.80) and depersonalization was lowest(2.20) among subordinate concepts of burn out. Work place location and average income of the subjective which are subordinate concepts of social demographic characteristics showed significant correlation with job performance. Role conflict, relation of co-worker, workload were significant factors for emotional exhaustion and meaning of the job, will of patient, challenge were significant factors for lack of feeling of accomplishment by multiple regression analysis. Relation of co-worker, aggression of patient and meaning of the job were also significant factors for depersonalization. Conclusion : Emotional exhaustion and lack of feeling of accomplishment among subordinate concepts of burn out were high in the subjective who participated this study. Significant factors that contribute to burn out of this study, shows different result compare to the studies that show other factors contribute to burn out who works at convalescent hospital or other place.

  • Renaissance Age is called the Period of Discovery because of great development of the economy and the science, and is known the Period of scientific analysis of Man and of interest of Nature out of a blind obedience in the Middle ages. Especially in visual art architecture, painting and sculpture, the rational spirit of Renaissance actually and distinctly communicates the meaning of Work through the scientific and mathematical expression after a finding Perspective by Brunelleschi. So the puropse of this study is to clarify the substancial meaning of Renaissance Art by investigating the expression applied Perspective to the works of Brunelleschi's architecture, Donatello's sculpture and Masaccio's painting.

  • The concept of style provides a useful structure in history of Art. In aspect of formative art, dress and art work are alike, so style is a useful concept in the historical methodology on dress. The main purpose of this study was to apply the art criticism to the historical methodology on dress. For this purpose, documentary studies about style as a tool of historical research were proceeded. The results were as follows : 1. The concept of style consists of the external form and the internal meaning as double roots. Therefore, it's indispensable that the two asp-ects of style, form and meaning, must to be harmonized to describe the historical phenomena in dress. 2. The change pattern of style in dress is not always predeterminate and regular according to the cyclical theory. From the alternative point of view, the change pattern of style could be to describe the continuous theory proposed by kroeber, Brodsky. The whole change of style is considered "liked solution" by this theory.is theory.

응집의 이론(II) -플록형성에서의 G값의 의의- (Theory of Coagulation(II) -The (Relative) Insignificance of G in Flocculation-)

  • The mean velocity gradient, G, has been used as a principal design and operation parameter for flocculation unit. This paper questions that significance. The physical and qualitative meaning of collision efficiency factors of each transport mechanism (Brownian motion, fluid shear, and differential sedimentation) are reviewed. The overall collision frequency function is calculated by summing up the collision frequency function of each mechanism. In the collision of two particles of different size, a diagram showing the dominant region in which each mechanism is important is developed and the meaning of the diagram is discussed. The primary ramification of this curvilinear, heterodisperse approach is that G is found to be not nearly so important. Previous experimental work in which the role of G has been examined is reviewed in light of this finding.

  • "Singijonmangron(神氣存亡論; theory of mind-spirit activities)" is a medical discourse of Janggyeongak(張景岳) in the Ming[明] dynasty, and "Wongijonmangron(元氣存亡論; theory of original gi functioning)" is a work by Seoryeongtae(徐靈胎) in the Qing[淸] dynasty. One emphasized the importance of mind-spirit activities and the other said seriously about original gi functioning. We did a study on these two medical theories, and began with identifying the meaning of 'Gi' among the ancient chinese philosophy and medicine such as "Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經)". After that, we showed the general 'Gi' and its variations in the meaning of 'Gi' according to name and function in "Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經)"and other classics of prominent historic scholars of medicine, finally trying to find out the essentials of mind-spirit[神氣] by Janggyeongak(張景岳) and original gi[元氣] by Seoryeongtae(徐靈胎).

한자의 형태와 의미를 가구에 적용하기 위한 디자인 방법 연구 (A Study on the Design Method by Translating the Shape and Meaning of Chinese Character into Furniture)

  • The purpose of the study is to explore the possibilities for translating the images and meaning of Chinese characters into furniture. Using Chinese characters as designing sources for furniture has a lot of possibilities to inspire originative and creative works. When using images of characters, totally peculiar and new shapes of furniture which have great esthetic value can be considered. The functions of furniture are related to the meanings of characters. Therefore, the furniture could be recognized by the characters from which the works were formed. In the process of interpreting two dimensional letters in three dimensional forms, the graphic elements and values of the characters as two dimensional objects should be analyzed. In order to express the characters completely, both esthetic shapes and the essences of characters should be blended. For the effective translating work, the method of expression may require exaggerating, simplifying and abbreviating the shapes of characters.

An Improved Method of Character Network Analysis for Literary Criticism: A Case Study of

  • As a computational approach to literary criticism, the method of character network analysis has attracted attention. The character network is composed of nodes as characters and links as relationship between characters, and has been used to analyze literary works systematically. However, there were limitations in that relationships between characters were so superficial that they could not reflect intimate relationships and quantitative data from the network were not interpreted in depth regarding meaning of literary works. In this study, we propose an improved method of character network analysis through a case study on the play . First, we segmented the character network into a dialogue network focused on speaker-to-listener relationship and an opinion network focused on subject-to-object relationship. We analyzed these networks in various ways and discussed how analysis results could reflect structure and meaning of the work. Through these studies, we strived to find a way of organic and meaningful connection between literary criticism in humanities and network analysis in computer science.

  • What is 'Art Theory'? In the western sense, the term poses a vague ambiguity, and in the eastern, it is rather an abstract and metaphysical concept. As for etymology, theory is derived from theoria and theoria from theoros. It refers to an act of viewing or seeing, of course not in a metaphysical sense. Plato understood it as 'eide'. During the time of Plotinus, theoria encompassed gazing at every possible reality, and this gazing, that is theoria, is closely related to reality as aunit that theoriacan perceive. However, we tend to distinguish, as other scientists of dualism have done, studio art from theory since a pre-modern approach to art has been particularly tuned to studio practice, set apart from theory. Therefore, in studio classes, students are expected to learn the subject based on the foundational curriculum methods such as medium, genre, technique:, rather than bringing out their own interpretations and discussing theories. As a result, students have become artists, who are not able to understand their own art. Art professors who conduct class in studio are required to proceed with specific 'theories' as well as 'intellectual reflections'. In this respect, this thesis presents poiesis and an idea of 'acting out'. Although art history and aesthetic theory tend to view art as a finished product, actual art-making and related theories should not only be acknowledged as 'completion' (finition) but also be accompanied by theoretic interpretations of the act itself and process. Accordingly, it is to accept and appreciate art as finished result in view of current theory and aesthetics thus boils down to aisthesis. Likewise, poietics starts from a point where an artist is related to studio and examines the 'work process' that extends as far as to the exact end of work. Through the study of such relationship, it is possible that theory understands 'studio' and 'process', and an artist can grant an independent meaning to studio where s/he pours her/his heart out creating a work of art. Theory is a study on artistic discovery thus should be equipped with functions that can accommodate fortuity, imitation, thinking, culture, and surrounding.
