In dynamic analyses such as seismic ground response and soil-structure interaction problems, it is very crucial to obtain accurate dynamic shear modulus of soil deposit. In this study, an extensive data base of available experimental data is compiled and reanalyzed to establish a simple empirical formula for the dynamic shear modulus reduction curve to cover wide range of strain for sandy soils. The proposed empirical equation is to represent the dynamic shear modulus degradation with strain in terms of low-amplitude dynamic shear modulus and effective mean confining Pressure, since those factors have the most significant effect on the Position and shape of the shear modulus reduction curve for nonelastic soils. If low-amplitude shear modulus is measured, degraded modulus at any shear strain amplitude can be calculated using the proposed equation.

This study focused on the resilient modulus prediction model, which is the functions of mean effective principal stress and axial strain, for three types of railroad trackbed materials such as crushed stone, weathered soil, and crushed-rock soil mixture. The model is composed with the maximum Young's modulus and nonlinear values for higher strain in parallel with dynamic shear modulus. The maximum values is modeled by model parameters, $A_E$ and the power of mean effective principal stress, $n_E$. The nonlinear portion is represented by modified hyperbolic model, with the model parameters of reference strain, ${\varepsilon}_r$ and curvature coefficient, a. To assess the performance of the prediction models proposed herein, the elastic response of a test trackbed near PyeongTaek, Korea was evaluated using a 3-D nonlinear elastic computer program (GEOTRACK) and compared with measured elastic vertical displacement during the passages of freight and passenger trains. The material types of sub-ballasts are crushed stone and weathered granite soil, respectively. The calculated vertical displacements within the sub-ballasts are within the order of 0.6mm, and agree well with measured values with the reasonable margin. The prediction models are thus concluded to work properly in the preliminary investigation.

Fatigue behavior and life prediction were presented for thermal-mechanical and isothermal low cycle fatigue of 12Cr forged steel used for high temperature applications. In-phase and out-of-phase thermal-mechanical fatigue test at 350 to 600.deg. C and isothermal low cycle fatigue test at 600.deg. C were conducted using smooth cylindrical hollow specimen under strain-control with total strain ranges from 0.006 to 0.015. Cyclic softening behavior was observed regardless of thermal-mechanical and isothermal fatigue tests. The phase difference between temperature and strain in thermal-mechanical fatigue resulted in significantly shorter fatigue life for out-of-phase than for in-phase. The difference in fatigue lives was dependent upon the magnitudes of inelastic strain ranges and mean stresses. Increase in inelastic strain range showed a tendency of intergranular cracking and decrease in fatigue life, especially for out-of-phase thermal-mechanical fatigue. Thermal-mechanical fatigue life prediction was made by partitioning the strain ranges of the hysteresis loops and the results of isothermal low cycle fatigue tests which were performed under the combination of slow and fast strain rates. Predicted fatigue lives for out-of-phase using the strain range partitioning method showed an excellent agreement with the actual out-of-phase thermal-mechanical fatigue lives within a factor of 1.5. Conventional strain range partitioning method exhibited a poor accuracy in the prediction of in-phase thermal-mechanical fatigue lives, which was quite improved conservatively by a proposed strain range partitioning method.
Inelastic deformation behavior of metals and alloys is considered rate dependent. Uniaxial ratcheting experiments performed by Ruggles and Krempl, and Hassan and Kyriakides exhibited that higher mean stress for a fixed stress amplitude resulted in higher ratchet strain within a rate independent framework and higher stress rate resulted in lower ratchet strain, respectively. These phenomena are qualitatively investigated by numerical experiments through unified viscoplasticity theory. The theory does not separate rate-independent plasticity and rate-dependent creep, and thus uses only one inelastic strain to describe inelastic deformation processes with the concept of the yield surface. The growth law for the kinematic stress, which is a tensor valued state variable of the constitutive equations, is modified to predict the linear evolution of long-term ratchet strain.
Two possible shape memory processes, austenite to detwinned martensite transformation and twinned martensite to detwinned martensite transformation of a shape memory alloy have been modeled and examined. Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method with Mori-Tanaka's mean field theory is used for modeling of the shape memory processes of TiNi shape memory alloy reinforced aluminum matrix composite. The shape memory amount of shape memory alloy, plastic strain and residual stress in the matrix are computed and compared for the two processes. It is shown that the shape memory amount shows differences in a small prestrain region, but the plastic strain and the residual stress in the matrix show differences in the whole prestrain region. The shape memory process with initially martensitic state of the shape memory alloy would be favorable to the increase in the yield stress of the composite owing to the large compressive residual stress and plastic strain in the matrix.
This paper presents development of finite element simulation program and analysis of hot extrusion through square dies with a mandrel. The design of extrusion dies is still an art rather than science. Die design for a new extrusion process is developed from through in-plant trials. In the present paper, a three-dimensional steady-state finite element simulation program is developed. Steady-state assumption is used for both the analyses of deformation and temperature. The developed program is effectively used to simulate hollow extrusion of several sections. Distributions of temperature effective strain rate, mean strain rate and mean stress are studied for an effective design of extrusion dies.

The objective of the present paper is to study the possibility of integrating this method into the design of dies for extrusion of complex section. To obtain sound product, the distributions and effects of temperature, effective strain rate, mean strain rate and mean stress are studied.

The parameters such as Richardson numbers or stability parameters are widely used to account for the extra straining effects due to three-dimensionality, curvature, rotation, swirl and others arising in paractical complex flows. Existing expressions for the extra strain in turbulence models such as $k-{\epsilon}$ models, however, do not satisfy the tensor invariant condition representing the coordinate indifference. In the present paper, considering the characteristics of both the mean strain rate and the mean vorticity, a new parameter to deal with the extra straining effects is proposed. The new parameter has a simple form and satisfies the tensor invariant condition. A semi-quantitative analysis between the present and previous parameters for several typical complex flows suggests that the newly proposed parameter is more general and adequate in representing the extra straining effects than the previous ad-hoc parameters.

To compare the nutritional quality of TPG (Teleaulax / Plagioselmis / Geminigera) clade species of cryptomonads with that of RHO (Rhodomonas / Rhinomonas / Storeatula) clade species 6 Teleaulax amphioxeia (TA) and 1 Rhinomonas sp. strains were mass-cultured in newly designed 500-L photobioreactors to the end of exponential growth phase. Intraspecific variations (IVs) in terms of one standard deviation among the 6 TA strains in the compositions of the three macronutrients were 41.5 (protein), 89.8 (lipid), and 15.6% (carbohydrate) of the mean. When harvested from stationary growth phase mean compositions of essential amino acids (EAAs, 47.3%) and non-EAAs (52.7%) of the 2 TA strains, CR-MAL07 and CR-MAL08-2, were similar to those of a Chroomonas strain. The IVs between the 2 TA strains in the composition of EAAs (10.3 and 2.4) and non-EAAs (8.5 and 2.1% of the mean) were rather smaller than those of saturated fatty acids (30.3 and 26.1) and unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs, 12.0 and 12.5% of the mean) in f/2-Si and urea-based compound fertilizer (UCF) culture media, respectively. Mean compositions of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 17.9%) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 12.7%) of total fatty acids of the 2 TA strains were higher than those that of a Chroomonas strain. EPA and DHA compositions exhibited similar level of IVs between the 2 TA strains in f/2-Si (14.6 and 11.0) and UCF media (12.6 and 13.5% of the mean). Thus, the nutritional quality in terms of amino acids, UFAs, EPA, and DHA in a TPG clade species, T. amphioxeia was comparable to those of RHO clade species with notable IVs. Practically, biotechnological targets for TPG clade cryptomonad strains might be subspecies or clone level.
