  • In this study, the effect of a long post-deposition thermal annealing(600 and 1000 $^{\circ}C$) on the surface acoustic wave (SAW) properties of polycrystalline (poly) aluminum-nitride (AlN) thin films grown on a 3C-SiC buffer layer was investigates. The poly-AlN thin films with a (0002) preferred orientation were deposited on the substrates by using a pulsed reactive magnetron sputtering system. Experimental results show that the texture degree of AlN thin film was reduced along the increase in annealing temperature, which caused the decrease in the electromechanical coupling coefficient ($k^2$). The SAW velocity also was decreased slightly by the increase in root mean square (RMS) roughness over annealing temperature. However, the residual stress in films almost was not affect by thermal annealing process due to small lattice mismatch different and similar coefficient temperature expansion (CTE) between AlN and 3C-SiC. After the AlN film annealed at 1000 $^{\circ}C$, the insertion loss of an $IDT/AlN/3C-SiC/SiO_2/Si$ structure (-16.44 dB) was reduced by 8.79 dB in comparison with that of the as-deposited film (-25.23 dB). The improvement in the insertion loss of the film was fined according to the decrease in the grain size. The characteristics of AlN thin films were also evaluated using Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectra and X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) images.

  • In this paper, we investigated the effect of Co content on the microstructural and electrical properties of $Ni_{0.79}Mn_{2.21-x}Co_xO_4$ (x=0 to 0.25) specimens. Solid-state reaction was used to prepare the bulk specimens. XRD (X-ray diffraction) patterns showed that all compositions had a cubic spinel phase. As a result of the microstructural properties, FE-SEM(field-emission scanning electron microscopy) analysis showed a dense structure, and the mean grain size increased from $5.24{\mu}m$ to $7.33{\mu}m$ with an increase of Co content from x=0 to 0.25. All specimens exhibited the typical NTC thermistor characteristics as the electrical resistance exponentially decreased with increasing temperature. The resistivity and the B-value of $Ni_{0.79}Mn_{1.96}Co_{0.25}O_4$ were $2959{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ and 3719, respectively.

  • Some promising design criteria for the construction of artificial beaches are presented. Based on the result of visitor's enquete and field observations, the degree of satisfaction for some parameters such as wave height, water and air temperature and quality of sediments are obtained. Correlations between these parameters and the degree of satisfaction are also derived and discussed. From the study, the desirable design conditions for artificial beaches with the degree of satisfaction over 70% are proposed as; the minimum comfortable utilization area per capita is found to be approximately $10m^2$, maximum mean wave height 0.7m, the lowest water temperature $22^{\circ}C$, average diameter of sands 0.5mm approximately with identical grain size and roundness, and the foreshore slope less than 1 : 20.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the differences in food intake patterns by the economic status. Data from the 1998 Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey were used. Using the poverty line based on the 1998 Korean minimum cost of living, the subjects (n = 10400) were classified into high class (36.1%), middle class (40.7%) and low class (23.1%). Mean intakes for other food groups except grains, potatoes and vegetables became higher as the eco-nomic levels were going up. By the family size, it was found that intakes of grains and fishes were different (p<0.05). By the economic status, intakes of fruits (p<0.05), meats (p<0.05) and fishes (p<0.01) were different. There were no significant differences in consumed types of food by the economic status. Rice was the most prevalent food in all clas-ses and its intakes increased as the economic status was going down. In the dietary patterns of main food group (GMDVF: Grain, Meats, Dairy, Vegetable and Fruit), the pattern except dairy (11011) revealed the highest proportion in high-middle class while the patterns without dairy and fruit food groups (11010) had the highest proportion in low class. The propor-tions of subjects with the low dietary diversity score (DDS) increased as economic status was going down (p<0.01). The food groups that most people do not consume were the dairy and fruit group. Proportions of people who missed one or more group increased as economic status was going down. The high dietary variety score (DVS) also was linked to a high score on the DDS and high class (p<0.01). Thus the intakes of the dairy and fruits product should be increased in all classes. The low class especially had worse quality of food intakes pattern than that of the high or middle class. The nutrition policy and education programs need to be established according to the economic status.

  • Physical and acoustic properties of sediment on the southwestern Taean Penisula, the Yellow Sea, were studied using eight piston cores. The sediments in the study area are largely composed of sand which has been deposited with sea-level change after LGM(Last Glacial Maximum). After the sea-level rise, fine-grained sediments discharged from Keum River and neighboring coast area were deposited as muddy sand or sandy mud. Results of these sedimentary environment in this area, the texture of sediments are different from place to place with variable horizontal and vertical distribution of physical and acoustic properties. Correlations among the physical, geoacoustic properties, and mean grain size show slight deviations from those of the South Sea in spite of similar pattern. This is probably due to the differences in sedimentary environment, mineral composition, and measurement system.

  • In Kwangyang Bay, the south coast of Korea, surface sediments and sedimentation rates have been investigated to understand the distribution and variation of tidal flat sediments after the construction of sea dyke. The mean grain size of the surface sediments during autumn is coarser, and decrease from winter to summer except for temporarily coarsening in the early summer. The depositional processes are prevalent in spring, while erosional processes are dominant in summer and autumn. This seasonal variation of sedimentary processes show similar results monitored from 2001 to 2003 before the construction of sea dyke. In the northern area of the bay, net annual sedimentation rates show similar results monitored from 2001 to 2003 before the construction of sea dyke. However, in the western area of the bay, net annual sedimentation rates change from erosion-dominated to deposition-dominated environments. It is considered that the western area of the bay is changed to erosion-dominated environments, as a result of the changes of hydrodynamic conditions, caused by sea dyke construction.

  • The coarse deposit with a lower mud content adjacent to the shelf of the southern East Sea is probably a "relict" sediment deposited in response to a lower stand of sea level during the Pleistocene. The sediment that developed on the slope and in the deep sea was river-borne primarily and was secondarily reworked or redistributed by the Tsushima Warm Current from the East China Sea. The clay mineralogy of the area suggests various sources of fine-grained sediment from adjacent rivers, the Korea Strait, volcanic material from Ulleung Island, and the Japan coast. Massive sand, bioturbated mud, homogeneous mud, and laminated mud were the dominant facies found in the core sediments from the study area. The massive sand was mainly volcanic ash from an eruption on Ulleung Island (9300 yr BP) and consisted of colorless pumiceous glass and a black scoriaceous type. The sedimentation rates on the slope, based on the Ulleung-Oki ash layer, were about 10cm/ky higher than in the basin. Other than the coarse-grain sediment, the mean size of the fine sediment dominating the bioturbated and homogeneous muds in the basin and the laminated mud on the slope was 6-10 phi. This indicates a difference in the major sedimentary process: hemipelagic sedimentation in the Ulleung Basin and mass flow deposition, such as turbidite, on the slope of the southern East Sea.

  • The modal analysis was carried out for the total of 216 subface sediments of southern continental shelf of Korean peninsula. Sandy mud or muddy sand distributed in the range of 70∼100 m water depth revealed the bimodal type (sand and mud components). The relations of textural parameters obtained from every modal were consistent with those of shallow marine sediments. The characteristics of sand component between bimodal were as follows: (1) the distributions of mean grain size, sorting, shell content were repeatedly distributed like the directions of depth contour lines. (2) Sand component was composed of medium to fine sand (Mz, 1-3$\psi$) containing many shell fragments, a few pebbles, and iron-stained quartz. (3) The surface of quartz revealed the concordial breakage and V-shaped features formed at high energy environment. (4) In CM-pattern, sand component was plotted in rolling and bottom suspension area. These characteristics imply that sand component probably derives from shoreface sediments deposited at the beach environment.

  • To elucidate contamination levels and distribution of methyl mercury (Me-Hg) in Korean coastal areas, 126 sediment samples were collected from Kyeonggi Bay, Namyang Bay, Chinhae Bay, and Lake Shihwa during 1995-1996, and the Me-Hg concentrations were determined by cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrometry (CVAFS). Contamination levels of Me-Hg in sediments from Kyeonggi Bay, Namyang Bay, Chinhae Bay, and Lake Shihwa were 274 ${\pm}$ 990, 108 ${\pm}$ 24, 294 ${\pm}$ 342, and 1080 ${\pm}$ 760 pg/g, respectively. Concentrations of Me-Hg in sediments were significantly correlated with total organic carbon and sulfur contents, but were independent of mud contents and mean grain size. The highest concentration of Me-Hg (7100 pg/g) was observed at Incheon North Harbor (Site Kl9) in Kyeonggi Bay. This Me-Hg concentration was one or two orders of magnitude higher than those in other Kyeonggi Bay sediments were. The average concentration of Me-Hg in sediments from Lake Shihwa was higher than in those from other study areas. The three peaks of Me-Hg concentrations were observed on three sites (55, 56,and 510) in Lake Shihwa and gradually decreased in distance-dependent manner around these sites. High concentrations of Me-Hg at surface and 10-cm sediment depth in Chinhae Bay maybe due to higher rates of methylation process by active sulfate-reducing bacteria or higher concentrations of total mercury available to sulfate-reducing bacteria.

  • Effects of two-step aging treatment on the stress corrosion cracking(SCC) resistance of 7050 Al alloy were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, electrical conductivity measurement and stress corrosion facter(SCF) evaluation. It was found that η', principal hardening phase, transformed to η during over aging above maximum hardness, and SCC resistance was improved by increasing of the size and interspacing of η particles in matrix and grain boundary. The electrical conductivity increased with aging time, but SCF decreased due to the decrease of yield strength. This results mean increase of SCC resistance The optimum two-step aging condition in forged 7050 Al alloy was to be first aged at $120^{\circ}C$ for 6h and then finally aged at $175^{\circ}C$ for 12h.
