  • Objectives : Allergic children have known to have multiple behavior problems. Among them, attentional ability disorder is one of the most common problems. This study is to examine relationship between learning ability and allergic rhinitis by analyzing EEG status of children. Methods : We analyzed cognitive functions of two different children groups; 21 children with allergic rhinitis and 19 normal children with CANS 3000(Central & Autonomic Nervous System, LAXTHA Inc., Korea), cognitive functions assessment program by EEG. Results : 1. According to mean active EEG rhythm of Theta, Alpha, SMR, M-beta, there were no significant difference between allergic rhinitis and the normal group. 2. According to mean active EEG rhythm of right H-beta, Gamma wave allergic rhinitis group's value was significantly higher than that of the normal group. 3. According to mean cognitive strength, response, concentration, left / right brain activity and learning ability score, there were no significant difference between allergic rhinitis and the normal group. 4. According to mean workload score, allergic rhinitis group's value was significantly higher than that of the normal group. Conclusions : It is likely that allergic rhinitis group, which showed relatively high frequency EEG rhythm, is more fragile to stress and less active on mental processing. Along side with physical examination, psychological assessment should also be conjugated on treating children with allergic rhinitis.

  • In this paper, we utilize a Gaussian process to predict the power consumption in the air-conditioning system. As the power consumption in the air-conditioning system takes a form of a time-series and the prediction of the power consumption becomes very important from the perspective of the efficient energy management, it is worth to investigate the time-series model for the prediction of the power consumption. To this end, we apply the Gaussian process to predict the power consumption, in which the Gaussian process provides a prior probability to every possible function and higher probabilities are given to functions that are more likely consistent with the empirical data. We also discuss how to estimate the hyper-parameters, which are parameters in the covariance function of the Gaussian process model. We estimated the hyper-parameters with two different methods (marginal likelihood and leave-one-out cross validation) and obtained a model that pertinently describes the data and the results are more or less independent of the estimation method of hyper-parameters. We validated the prediction results by the error analysis of the mean relative error and the mean absolute error. The mean relative error analysis showed that about 3.4% of the predicted value came from the error, and the mean absolute error analysis confirmed that the error in within the standard deviation of the predicted value. We also adopt the non-parametric Wilcoxon's sign-rank test to assess the fitness of the proposed model and found that the null hypothesis of uniformity was accepted under the significance level of 5%. These results can be applied to a more elaborate control of the power consumption in the air-conditioning system.

  • For the purpose of promotion of mental health in the rural elderly, the author surveyed 558 elderlies aged 60 years or more, and assessed the prevalence rates of depression and cognitive impairment by using self-rating depression scale of Zung (SDS) and the Korean version of mini-mental state examination (MMSEK). Also the association between depression or cognitive function and socio-environmental factors were investigated. The major findings were as follows ; 1. The prevalence rates of severe depression and cognitive impairment were 20.9% and 14.9% in all the elderly of both sexes, respectively. 2. The rates of depression and cognitive impairment increased with increasing age in both sex groups. The mean scores of SDS increased and the mean scores of MMSEK decreased significantly among them (p<0.01). 3. Those being female, widows or widowers, and those having low levels of physical activity, showed significantly high the mean scores of depression and had significantly low the mean scores of cognitive impairment (p<0.01). 4. The depression scores relating to decreased libido, confusion, psychomotor retardation, hopelessness and indecisiveness were relatively high in both sexes. 5. All the items of mini-mental state examination were significantly correlated with depression. 6. In stepwise multiple regression analysis on depression, MMSEK, level of physical activity, chronic disease, marital status and family income were selected as highly correlated variables, and the $R^2$-value for these variables was 33.7%. 7. In stepwise multiple regression analysis on cognitive function, level of physical activity, age, depression, sex and marital status were selected as highly correlated variables, and the $R^2$-value for these variables was 62.6%. The depression and cognitive impairment of the elderly were positively correlated with nearly all sociodemographic variables.

  • This paper introduces a performance integration method to predict variation characteristic of a performance function of electromagnetic machines or devices due to manufacturing tolerances. A normalized performance function space and a hybrid mean value technique are adapted to effectively predict mean and variance, which can identify probabilistic distribution of the performance function. To verify the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method, a mathematical problem and a loudspeaker model are tested, and numerical results are compared with those of existing methods such as Monte Carlo simulation and univariate dimension reduction method.

  • In this paper, the electron transport characteristics in $SiH_4$ has been analysed over the E/N range $0.5{\sim}300[Td]$ and Pressure value 0.5, 1, 2.5 [Torr] by a two-term approximation Boltzmann equation method and by a Monte Carlo simulation. The motion has been calculated to give swarm parameters for the electron drift velocity. diffusion coefficient, electron ionization, mean energy and the electron energy distribution function. The electron energy distribution function has been analysed in $SiH_4$ at E/N=30, 50[Td] for a case of the equilibrium region in the mean electron energy and respective set of electron collision cross sections. The results of Boltzmann equation and Monte carlo simulation have been compared with experimental data by Pollock, Ohmori, cottrell and Walker.

  • Objectives: Ryodoraku is a physiological function test using electric current. Since it can evaluate the patient's overall condition as well as a function of individual organs, Ryodoraku can be assumed as an effective way to diagnose chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the values of Ryodoraku for diagnosing COPD. Methods: We designated a COPD group, who were over 40 and satisfying COPD criteria, $FEV_1$/FVC<0.7. The Control group also consisted of members over 40 years old but without COPD and any other lung disease. We conducted a comparative study by checking the Ryodoraku score (RS), the average of Rt.&Lt. H1 (mean H1), the mean difference value between both H1s (${\mid}H1^R-H1^L{\mid}$) and the ratio of patients whose RS was under 40. Then we investigated the correlation between the mean H1 and the results of pulmonary function test (PFT). Results & Conclusions: In the COPD group, RS, mean H1 and ${\mid}H1^R-H1^L{\mid}$ were significantly lower and the ratio of 'RS<40' patients was meaningfully higher than in the Control group. On the other hand, PFT seems not to be replaced by Ryodoraku since there was no correlation between mean H1 and the results of PFT. Though more experiments and researches are needed to be further confirmed, Ryodoraku is expected to be an adequate way for prediagnosing and following up the COPD patients.

  • We introduce a new type of fractional derivative, which we call as the right local general truncated M-fractional derivative for α-differentiable functions that generalizes the fractional derivative type introduced by Anastassiou. This newly defined operator generalizes the standard properties and results of the integer order calculus viz. the Rolle's theorem, the mean value theorem and its extension, inverse property, the fundamental theorem of calculus and the theorem of integration by parts. Then we represent a relation of the newly defined fractional derivative with known fractional derivative and in context with this derivative a physical problem, Kirchoff's voltage law, is generalized. Also, the importance of this newly defined operator with respect to the flexibility in the parametric values is described via the comparison of the solutions in the graphs using MATLAB software.

  • In this paper, improved power-mean integral inequality, which provides a better approach than power-mean integral inequality, is proved. Using Hölder-İşcan integral inequality and improved power-mean integral inequality, some inequalities of Hadamard's type for functions whose derivatives in absolute value at certain power are quasi-convex are given. In addition, the results obtained are compared with the previous ones. Then, it is shown that the results obtained together with identity are better than those previously obtained.

  • Responses of marine vehicles and ocean structures in a seaway can be predicted by applying the probabilistic approach. When we consider a linear system, the responses in a random seaway can be evaluated through spectral analysis in the frequency domain. But when we treat nonlinear system in irregular waves, it is necessary to get time history of waves. In the previous study we introduced one-directional waves (long crested waves)as wave environment and carried out calculations and experiments in the waves. But the real sea in which marine vehicles and structures are operated has multi-directional waves (short crested waves). It is important to get a simulated random sea and analyse dynamic problems in the sea. We need entire sample function or probabillty density function to infer statistical value of random process. However if the process are ergodic process, we can get statistical values by analysis of one sample function. In this paper, we developed the simulation technique of multi-directional waves and proved that the time history given by this method keep ergodic characteristics by the statistical analysis.
