  • This study is to analyze numerically the spatial behaviors of the solute transport in a spatially correlated variable-aperture fracture under the effective normal stress conditions. Numerical results show that the solute transport in a fracture is strongly affected by the spatial correlation length of apertures and applied effective normal stress. According to increasing spatial correlation length, the mean residence time of solute is decreased and the tortuosity and Peclet number (is a dimensionless number relating the rate of advection of a flow to its rate of diffusion) is also decreased. These results mean that the geometry of the aperture distribution is favorable to the solute transport as the spatial correlation length is increased. However, according to the applied effective normal stress is increased, the mean residence time and tortuosity have a tendency to increase but the Peclet number is decreased. The main reason that the Peclet number is decreased, is that the solute is displaced by one or two channels with relatively higher local flow rate due to the increment of contact areas by increasing effective normal stress. Moreover, based on numerical results of the solute transport in this study, the exponential-type correlation formulae between the mean residence time and the effective normal stress are proposed.

  • The estimation of material cycle of pollutants is necessary for the environment management in coastal zone. Model for material budgets are useful tools to understand the phenomena of natural system and to provide an insight into the complex processes including physical, chemical and biological processes occuring in natural system. Budgets of fresh water, salt and nutrients were estimated in order to clarify the characteristics of seasonal material cycle in Keum river estuary. Inflow volumes of freshwater into system was approximately 1.014×10/sup 8/~12.565×10/sup 8/m³/month and discharge in Keum river has occupied 99.7% of total freshwater. Seasonal variations of freshwater volume in the system were found to be very high in the range of about 4 ~ 14 times due to rainfall in summer season. Existing water mass of freshwater in system calculated by salt budget was approximately 0.339×10/sup 8/~0.652×10/sup 8/m³. Mean residence time of freshwater was calculated to be about 1.6~10.0day, and exchange time was calculated to be about 2.2~11.9day. Mean residence time was short as 1.6day in summer due to precipitation, and long as 10.1day in winter due to a drought. Inflow masses of DIP and DIN were approximately 5.57~32.68ton/month and 234.93~2,373.39ton/month, respectively. Seasonal inflow mass of DIP was larger than the outflow mass except for summer season. Thus, we postulate that accumulation of DIP in the system will happen. Residence times of DIP and DIN were calculated to be 1.1~6.4day and 1.8~10.9day, respectively. The ratio of water residence time versus DIP, DIN residence time was calculated to be 0.39~2.31 times and 0.83~1.13 times, respectively.

  • Flame extinction and the chemistry of stoichiometric methane/air mixture were investigated numerically in the PSR(perfectly stirred reactor). For the study, PSR code was modified to be possible to unsteady calculation, and the sinusoidal fluctuation was subjected to the residence time. In the region of residence time far from the extinction limit, combustion mode was strongly dependent on the frequency. The low frequency excitation provided the quasi-steady behavior on the temperature and the concentrations of related species, but small variation of temperature was observed under high frequency. In the region of residence time near the extinction limit, the mixture subjected above 1 KHz was still reacting even though extinction had to be occurred under quasi-steady concept. The attenuation of extinction limit resulted from that chemical time was comparable to the flow time. The mean mole fractions of both NO and CO were almost same regardless of imposed frequency. However, the average mole fraction of $C_2H_2$ was decreased as increasing frequency, which implies that soot yield might be reduced at the higher frequency of flow excitation. The result provides the basic concept for flame stabilization, and it will be used to design a mild combustor.

  • To obtain the preliminary design data for combustion of paper sludges, decomposition characteristics and combustion kinetics of paper sludges reactor have been determined in a TGA reactor. Also, the combustion characteristics of paper sludges have been determined in a fluidized bed reactor. The data obtained from the TGA reactor indicate that dewatering of paper sludge is terminated at temperature below 130${\circ}$C. With heating rate of 20${\circ}$C/min, combustion is terminated at temperature below 340${\circ}$C .The combustion rate is found to be first order with respect to temperature and oxygen concentration. Activation energies for paper wastes are found to be 570, 700, 2600, 4600 Kcal/mole, respectively. The calcination conversions were investigated with the operating temperature and residence time. In this investigation, it was found that calcination conversion was affected by the operating temperature and residence time. The optimum conditions of operating temperature and mean residence time were 850${\circ}$C and 6 minutes of respectively.

  • The residence time distribution of liquid flow in a 4.0cm diameter column packed with porous $Al_2O_3$ spheres of 0.37cm diameter were measured with pulse injections of a tracer under cocurrent trickling flow conditions. The mean residence time of liquid flow and liquid hold-up calculated by the transient curve of tracer were unaffected by gas flow rates under experimental ranges of liquid flow rates from 2.4 to $4.5(kg/m^2\;sec)$ and gas flow rates from 0 to $0.13(kg/m^2\;sec)$. The axial dispersion coefficient of liquid stream and apparent diffusivity of tracer in a micropore of solid particle were estimated from the response curve of tracer. The calculated Peclet No. were increased in ranges of 68-to 82 with a increasing of liquid mass velocity, and the external effective contacting efficiency between liquid and solid which can be expressed. by $(D_i)_{app}/D_i$ varied in ranges of 0.54 to 0.68 depending on the liquid flow rates. The gas to liquid(water) volumetric mass transfer coefficient were determined from desorption experiments with oxygen at $25^{\circ}C$ and 1 atm. The measured mass transfer coefficients were increased with liquid flow rates and the effect of gas flow rates on the mass transfer coefficient was insignificant.

  • Budgets of fresh water, salt, DIP and DIN in the Youngsan river estuary were estimated seasonally in order to clarify the characteristics of material cycling and flux of nutrients with a simple box model. Inflow volumes of freshwater into system was approximately $36.481{\times}10^6{\sim}663.634{\times}10^6m^3/month$ and existing water mass of freshwater in system calculated by salt budget was approximately $2.515{\times}10^6{\sim}5.812{\times}10^6m^3$. Mean residence time of freshwater was calculated to be about 0.26~2.03 day. water exchange $1,248{\times}10^6{\sim}9,489{\times}10^6m^3/month$ assumed with salinity between estuary and adjacent ocean. Inflow mass of DIN and DIN were approximately 76.63~1,149.91 ton/month and 2.91~61.22 ton/month, respectively. Residence times of DIP and DIN were calculated to be 0.45~1.10 day and 0.28~1.92 day, respectively. The ratio of water residence time versus DIP, DIN residence time was calculated that freshwater residence time was longer than DIP, DIN residence time except for summer season. Thus, We assume that circulation of Nutrients in the system will happen rapidly except for summer season. Specially DIP in Winter could assume to outer input source existence because of seawater inflow in system and high DIP concentration in open sea.

  • We present a new approach to the analysis of mobile cellular communication systems under the environment of mixed platforms adopting a guard channel scheme. We assume general cell residence time distributions according to platform-types. Our system model is based on a heterogeneous M/G/c loss system with customer-dependent guard channels, where heterogeneous customers with different service time distributions have different numbers of their own guard channels. We develop the general formula of steady state probabilities for the heterogeneous M/G/c loss system with customer-dependent guard channels. The mean channel occupancy times of new and handoff calls are rigorously derived under a general setting. Finally, our numerical results show that the blocking probability and the forced termination probability are sensitive to the cell residence time distributions.

  • Using In-113m emitting gamma ray of 0.392MeV at radioisotope tracer the RTD (residence time distribution) of water in the flocculator of wastewater treatment facility was measured. The result was analyzed mathematically using K-RTD program constructed on the basis of CFSTR (constant flow stirred tank reactor) model. The mean residence time and the tank number are the main parameters which describe the flow behavior of the system. Those parameters were obtained in the fitting profess of the simulated curves to the experimental results. It was suggested to construct a modified numerical model to describe the bypass flow which was observed in the experiment.

  • This study was carried out to determine the optimal number of ARGO floats in the East Sea in order to maximize their applications. The dominant spatio-temporal scale, size of the domain, and the typical float lifetimes in the East Sea were taken into consideration. The mean spatial de-correlation scale of temperature on isobaric surfaces reaches about 60 km. The minimum necessary number of floats is about 82 on average in order to secure independent ARGO profiles with the de-correlation scale. Considering the float lifetimes, about 27 floats per year should be deployed to maintain the 82 ARGO float array every year. To obtain spatially uniform distribution of ARGO float data, mean residence time and dispersion rate (basin area/residence time) of ARGO floats were evaluated in each basin of the East Sea. A faster (slower) dispersion rate requires more (less) ARGO floats to maintain the spatially uniform number of floats. According to the analysis, it is likely that the optimal ratio of the number of floats for each basin is 1:2:4 corresponding to Ulleung Basin:Yamato Basin:Japan Basin. In order to maintain relatively uniform ARGO observing networks, it is necessary to establish a long-term plan for deployment strategy based on float pathways and the dispersion rate parameters estimated by using currently active ARGO float trajectory data as well as reanalysis data.
