  • This study is theoretically examined the influences on the performance of diesel engine super¬charged by exhaust gas turbine with the change of excess air factor, admission ratio, total efficien¬cy of turbine and compressor, scavenging pressure ratio, and scavenging temperature. In this study, all calculations are carried out by computer, and the theoretical engine performance is com¬pared with the actual engine performance which is offered from engine manufacturer. Following results are acquired by this study. The mean effective pressure is increased with decrease of excess air factor or increase of scavenging pressure ratio. As the admission ratio or total efficiency of tur¬bine is increased, the mean effective pressure is increased but the specific fuel consumption is decreased. Mean calculation error compared with the actual engine performance is under 5 per¬cents, therefore, this calculation method can be used in the design of diesel engine.

  • Experiments have been conducted to investigate mean thermal structure in unstable turbulent thermal convection between two horizontal flat plates. The upper plate was kept at a constant cold temperature and the bottom plate at a constant hot temperature. Both air and water were used as its working fluids. Chamber aspect ratios were 3.80 and 6.17, the mean temperature differences between two plates were 2.6-9.3.deg. C, whose Rayleigh numbers in a range 6.13*10$^{5}$ -1, 07*10$^{8}$ . The heat transfer correlations obtained through the experiments are Nu=0.139R $a^{0.285}$ for air and Nu=0.087 R $a^{0.319}$ for water. Profiles of the mean temperature gradient clearly show the -2 and 1 4/3 power law regions.

  • We performed the experimental and the numerical study on the comparison of thermal comfort performance indices for cooling loads in the lecture room for 4 cases: Fan coil unit(FCU) or 4-way cassette air-conditioner is respectively operated with the ventilation system or without. We measured the velocity, the temperature distribution and predicted mean vote(PMV) value in the lecture room for 4 different air-conditioning methods. Effective draft temperature(EDT) and PMV were investigated to analyze the characteristics of two thermal comfort indices in the lecture room and to compare their values each other. From the results we knew that there is the similarity between PMV values and EDTs when the room is air-conditioned for cooling loads. It turned out that definition of the control temperature is very important when the EDT is calculated. Finally EDT should not be used to predict the accurate thermal comfort in case that the temperature and humidity are suddenly varied and the zone affected by the solar and inner wall radiation.

  • Sky view factor can quantify the influence of complex obstructions. This study aims to evaluate the best available SVF method that represents an urban thermal condition with land cover in complex city of Korea and also to quantify a correlation between SVF and mean air temperature; the results are as follows. First, three SVF methods comparison result shows that urban thermal study should consider forest canopy induced effects because the forest canopy test (on/off) on SVF reveals significant difference range (0.8, between maximum value and minimum value) in comparison with the range (0.1~0.3) of SVFs (Fisheye, SOLWEIG and 3DPC) difference. The significance is bigger as a forest cover proportion become larger. Second, R-square between SVF methods and urban local mean air temperature seems more reliable at night than a day. And as the value of SVF increased, it showed a positive slope in summer day and a negative slope in winter night. In the SVF calculation method, Fisheye SVF, which is the observed value, is close to the 3DPC SVF, but the grid-based SWG SVF is higher in correlation with the temperature. However, both urban climate monitoring and model/analysis study need more development because of the different between SVF and mean air temperature correlation results in the summer night period, which imply other major factors such as cooling air by the forest canopy, warming air by anthropogenic heat emitted from fuel oil combustion and so forth.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the changes in daily surface temperature of red pepper leaf compared to air and soil surface temperature. The maximum, minimum and average daily temperatures of red pepper leaf were 27.80, 11.40 and $19.01^{\circ}C$, respectively, which were lower by 0.10, 7.60 and $3.86^{\circ}C$ than air temperature, respectively, and lower by 15.00, 0.0 and $4.38^{\circ}C$ than soil surface temperature, respectively. Mean deviations of the difference between measured and estimated temperature by the E&E Model (Eom & Eom, 2013) for the air and surface temperature of red pepper leaf and soil were 0.64, 1.82 and $4.77^{\circ}C$, respectively. The relationships between measured and estimated scaled factor of the air and surface temperature of red pepper leaf and soil were very close to the 1:1 line. Difference between air and surface temperature of red pepper leaf showed a linear decreasing function with the surface temperature of red pepper leaf. Difference between soil surface temperature and air and surface temperature of red pepper leaf linearly increased with the soil surface temperature.

  • The statistical characteristics of the factors related to the daily rainfall prediction model are analyzed . Records of daily precipitation, mean air temperature, relative humidity , dew-point temperature and air pressure from 1973∼1998 at 8 meteorological sttions in south-western part of Korea were used. 1. Serial correlatino of daily precipitaiton was significant with the lag less than 1 day. But , that of other variables were large enough until 10 day lag. 2. Crosscorrelation of air temperature, relative humidity , dew-point temperature showed similar distribution wiht the basin contrours and the others were different. 3. There were significant correlation between the meteorological variables and precipitation preceded more than 2 days. 4. Daily preciption of each station were treated as a truncated continuous random variable and the annual periodic components, mean and standard deviation were estimated for each day. 5. All of the results could be considered to select the input variables of regression model or neural network model for the prediction of daily precipitation and to construct the stochastic model of daily precipitation.

  • Air and flue gas temperature distributions in the space heater for greenhouse were measured to develop a thermal design technology for the space heater. Also, the characteristics of the fan supplying air to the space heater were investigated. The temperature of the flue gas inside the flue gas tube was linearly decreased as the lenght of than those of the flue gas with the oxygen concentration of 8.25% at the last exit of the second flue gas tube. Thus, the operating efficiency of the space heater could be increased with low air ratio decreased exhausting gas temperature and saved the energy consumption with decreased excess air flow. The temperature of the air supplied by fan was increased slowly around the first flue gas tube, meanwhile, increased sharply around the second flue gas tube due to large LMTD (Logarithmic Mean Temperature Difference) at the first flue gas tube than which of the second flue gas tube.

  • Spark-ignition engine knock is affected by engine operating conditions such as engine speed, spark timing and intake air temperature. In this study the effect of intake air temperature on knock characteristics was studied experimentally using a 4-cylinder carburetor spark-ignition engine. The cylinder pressure data at 2000rpm were taken for intake air temperature range of $30^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$ with $10^{\circ}C$ interval. And 80 consecutive cycles were taken at each experimental condition. As the same spark timing, as the intake air temperature increased by $50^{\circ}C$, the mean knock intensity increased about 20kPa. This effect corresponds to that of spark timing advance of 3 crank angle degrees.

  • A study has been conducted experimentally on heat transfer characteristics of the heat exchangers with louvered fins in air. The experimental results are as follows; 1. Mean heat transfer coefficient is decreased with increasing temperature difference and model III is the best at constant temperature difference. 2. Pressure drop is increased with increasing air velocity, but it is decreased as the heat transfer area increases. 3. $\bar{h}/^{\Delta}p$ is increased and then decreased as air velocity increases.
