  • Static tensile and fatigue tests were conducted using tensile-shear specimens to evaluate the fatigue strength of a SPCC sheet clinch joint. The maximum tensile strength of the specimen produced at the optimal punching force was 1750 kN. The fatigue endurance limit (=760 N) approached 43% of the maximum tensile load (=1750 N) at a load ratio of 0.1, suggesting that the fatigue limit is approximately half of the value of the maximum tensile strength. The FEM analysis showed that at the fatigue endurance limit, the maximum von-Mises stress of 373 MPa is very close to the ultimate tensile strength of the SPCC sheet (=382 MPa).

  • In recent years, the crack accidents of earth and rockfill dams occur frequently. It is urgent to study the tensile strength and tensile failure mechanism of the gravelly soil in the core for the anti-crack design of the actual high earth core rockfill dam. Based on the self-developed uniaxial tensile test device, a series of uniaxial tensile test was carried out on gravelly soil with different gravel content. The compaction test shows a good linear relationship between the optimum water content and gravel content, and the relation curve of optimum water content versus maximum dry density can be fitting by two times polynomial. For the gravelly soil under its optimum water content and maximum dry density, as the gravel content increased from 0% to 50%, the tensile strength of specimens decreased from 122.6 kPa to 49.8 kPa linearly. The peak tensile strain and ultimate tensile strain all decrease with the increase of the gravel content. From the analysis of fracture energy, it is proved that the tensile capacity of gravelly soil decreases slightly with the increasing gravel content. In the case that the sample under the maximum dry density and the water content higher than the optimum water content, the comprehensive tensile capacity of the sample is the strongest. The relevant test results can provide support for the anti-crack design of the high earth core rockfill dam.

  • In the study, tensile, compression and in-plane tests about longitudinal direction of glass fiber were performed. Also, to obtain the material properties of GFRP fabric composite, tensile test was performed. All test were performed by the test method of ASTM. Maximum compressive strength was smaller than the maximum tensile strength at the longitudinal direction test results. Elastic modulus of the tensile and compressive was almost similar at the compression test results in the longitudinal direction. Based on the GFRP fabric composite test results, GF91 was showed good performance at maximum compressive, maximum strain and elastic modulus.

  • The objectives of this study were to investigate the relative effects of specific gravity and particle size on internal bond and tensile strengths and fracture toughness of particleboard and to compare mechanical strength with fracture toughness. The particleboard was manufactured with three different particle sizes at specific gravity levels of 0.6, 0.7, and 0.8 with a resin content of 10% based on oven dry weight. The results were summarized as follows: 1. Internal bond strength. fracture toughness in internal bond test. maximum tensile strength, and fracture toughness in tension test increased with the increase of specific gravity of particleboard. 2. As partcle size increased, internal bond strength, fracture toughness. maximum tensile strength. and fracture toughness in tension test increased. 3. The maximum tensile strength and fracture toughness appeared to be in a direct relationship, and then maximum tensile strength could be used for predicition of fracture toughness for tension test. 4. The fracture toughness in internal bond test was somewhat independent on induced crack length.

  • In this study, the tensile properties of sealants by heat deterioration were measured and analysed to gather the basic data of sealant because these studies do not have been investigated in Korea. Most general one-component silicone sealants were used and test specimen was I-type. The test parameters are sealant types which have different density and heat deterioration time in 80℃. As a result, the rat of reduction in area by heat deterioration was considerable increased at SR-A compared with SR-B. The tensile properties by heat deterioration decreased at SR-A because the specimen by deterioration occurred adhesive failure before tensile test. However, SR-B specimen was increased at maximum tensile stress but decreased at elongation in maximum tensile stress. Also, Maximum principal stress was measured at the edge of specimen by FEM simulation in order to find out failure points.

  • Geosynthetic reinforcements may be damaged during its installation in the filed. The installation damage mainly depends on two factors such as materials used and construction activities. This paper describes the results of a series of field tests, which are conducted to assess the installation damage of geogrid according to different maximum grain sizes of fills (40, 60, and 80 mm). These tests are done in three sites for twelve different kinds of geogrids. After field tests, the changes in tensile strength of the geogrids is determined from wide width tensile tests using both damaged and undamaged specimens. In the results of tests, tensile strength of the relatively flexible geogrids after field installation tests was decreased about from 20% to 40% according to the increment of the maximum grain size. On the other hand, for the relatively stiff geogrids, the loss of the tensile strength after site installation was examined below 5.2% independent of the maximum grain size of the soils. The results of this study show that the installation damage significantly depends on the stiffness of geogrid and is more obvious to a flexible geogrid and a fill material having higher maximum grain size.

  • In this study, high temperature tensile properties of high tensile strength steels(POSTEN60, POSTEN80) were investigated by elevated temperature tensile test. According toe the results, high temperature tensile strength of POSTEN60 deteriorated slowly to 100$^{\circ}C$. As the temperature went up the tensile strength became better because of blue shortness and it deteriorated radically after reached to the maximum value around 300$^{\circ}C$. For the POSTEN80, high temperature tensile strength deteriorated slowly to 200$^{\circ}C$.As the temperature went up the tensile strength became better and it deteriorated slowly to 600$^{\circ}C$ after reached to the maximum value around 300$^{\circ}C$. Strain of high tensile strength steels at the elevated temperature increased radically after the mercury rose to 600$^{\circ}C$. The strain hardening ratio of POSTEN60 was larger then that of POSTEN80 at the elevated temperature as in the case at the room temperature and it became smaller radically after the mercury rose to 400$^{\circ}C$.

  • In this paper, the effects of parameters related to the residual stress induced due to laser shock peening process to determine mitigation of the initial tensile residual stresses are discussed, such as the maximum pressure, pressure pulse duration, laser spot size and number of laser shots. In order to estimate the influence of the initial tensile residual stresses, which is generated by welding in 35CD4 50HRC steel alloy, the initial condition option was employed in the finite element code. It is found that $2{\times}HEL$ maximum pressure and a certain range of the pressure pulse duration time can produce maximum mitigation effects near the surface and depth, regardless of the magnitudes of tensile residual stess. But plastically affected depth increase with increasing maximum pressure and pressure pulse duration time. For the laser spot size, maximum compressive residual stresses have almost constant values. But LSP is more effective with increasing the magnitudes of tensile residual stress. For the multiple LSP, magnitudes of compressive residual stresses and plastically affected depths are found to increase with increasing number of laser shots, but the effect is less pronounced for more laser shots. And to conclude, even though the initial tensile residual stresses such as weld residual stress field are existed, LSP is enough to make the surface and depth reinforcement effects.

  • Various methods for fixation of graft have been widely used for reconstruction of anterior cruciate ligament. However, the biomechanical strength of each fixation techniques are not fully understood. The purpose of this study is to compare the pull out strength of different fixation techniques which is probably the most important factor for the success at the initial stage of healing. Biomechanical test was carried out to measure and compare the pull out tensile strength of five different fixation techniques in 35 pig(Yorkshire) knees. ANOVA and Duncan multiple comparison test was applied for statistical analysis. In the two fixation techniques with bone patellar tendon bone graft, the mean maximum tensile strength was $1333.4{\pm}148.5N$ with titanium interference screw, while it was $1310.1{\pm}168.9N$ with biodegradable interference screw. The failure mode were pulled out of bone plugs from the femoral tunnel in majority cases. In the fixations with hamstring tendon, the mean maximum tensile strength were $1405.9{\pm}135.1N$ with SemiFix screw, $820.3{\pm}104.5N$ with biodegradable interference screw, and $682.1{\pm}54.2N$ with Endobutton. The mode of failure was variable in each technique. The tendon was pulled out from the tunnel in biodegradable interference screw fixation, the screw was bent in the SemiFix system, and the polyester tape were ruptured or the buttons were pulled into tunnel in Endobutton fixation. The mean maximum tensile strength of two interference screws with bone patellar tendon bone was statistically comparable to that of SemiFix with hamstring tendon. However biodegradable interference screw and Endobutton with hamstring tendon showed weaker maximum tensile strength than above three fixation techniques (P<0.05).

  • The effect of discrete polypropylene fibre reinforcement on shear strength parameters, tensile properties and isotropic index of stabilized compacted residual subgrade was investigated. Composites of compacted subgrade were developed from polypropylene fibre dosage of 0%, 1%, 2.5% and 4% and 3% cement binder. Saturated compacted soil benefited from incremental fibre dosage, the mobilized friction coefficient increased to a maximum at 2.5% fibre dosage from 0.41 to 0.58 and the contribution due to further increase in fibre dosage was marginal. Binder stabilization increased the degree of isotropy for unreinforced soil at lower fibre dosage of 1% and then decreased with higher fibre dosage. Saturation of 3% binder stabilized soil decreased the soil friction angle and the degree of isotropy for both unstabilized and binder stabilized soil increased with fibre dosage. The maximum tensile stress of 3% binder stabilized fibre reinforced residual soil was 3-fold that of 3% binder stabilized unreinforced soil. The difference in computed and measured maximum tensile and tangential stress decreased with increase in fibre dosage and degree of stabilization and polypropylene fibre reinforced soil met local and international criteria for road construction subgrade.
