This study examined the maximum resistant moment and nonlinear rotational stiffness of wedge joint between the vertical and horizontal members of system supports. To examine the maximum resistant moment and propose the nonlinear rotation stiffness of wedge joint, 6 specimens were tested and additional 3 specimens, where the horizontal member was welded to the vertical member, were tested to compare the moment capacity of wedge joints. The average maximum moment in the tested wedge joint was 1.183 kNm which represented about 70 % of the maximum moment developed in the welded specimens. And, as simulating nonlinear rotational stiffness of the wedge joint, a tri-linear model was suggested. The rotational stiffness was estimated as 23.095 kNm/rad in first stage, 7.945 kNm/rad in second stage, and 3.073 kNm/rad in third stage. For the failure mode, the specimen with the wedge joint showed the failure of joint between vertical and horizontal members. However, the specimen with welded joint represented the yielding of horizontal members.
Top-to-bottom compression strength of corrugated fiberboard boxes is partly dependent on the load-carrying ability of the central panel areas. The ability of these central areas to resist bending under load will increase the stacking strength of the box. The difference of box compression strengths, among boxes which are made with identical dimensions and fabricated with same components but different flute sizes, is primarily due to difference of the flexural stiffness of the box panels. Top-to-bottom compression strength of a box is accurately predicted by flexural stiffness measurements and the edge crush test of the combined boards. This study was carried out to analyze the flexural stiffness, maximum bending force and maximum deflection for various corrugated fiberboards by experimental investigation. There were significant differences between the machine direction (MD) and the cross-machine direction (CD) of corrugated fiberboards tested. It was about 50% in SW and DW, and $62%{\sim}74%$ in dual-medium corrugated fiberboards(e.g. DM, DMA and DMB), respectively. There were no significant differences of maximum deflection in machine direction among the tested fiberboards but, in cross direction, DM showed the highest value and followed by SW, DMA, DMB and DW in order. For the corrugated fiberboards tested, flexural stiffness in machine direction is about $29%{\sim}48%$ larger than cross direction, and difference of flexural stiffness between the two direction is the lowest in DMA and DMB.

High speed rotor systems with magnetic bearings have been the subject of much research in recent years due to the potential for active vibration control. In this thesis, optimal design was conducted for an 8-pole heteropolar magnetic bearing used in the flexible rotor of a turbo blower. In connection with bearing stiffness, this optimal design process was conducted using a genetic algorithm(GA), which is based on natural selection and genetics. The maximum stiffness of the magnetic bearing-rotor was found by considering the critical speeds of the flexible rotor. As a result, the magnetic bearings were optimized to have maximum stiffness.
Deep excavations for development of subway systems in metropolitan regions surrounded by adjacent buildings is an important geotechnical problem, especialy in Tabriz city, where is mostly composed of young alluvial soils and weak marly layers. This study analyzes the wall displacement and ground surface settlement due to deep excavation in the Tabriz marls using two dimensional finite element method. The excavation of the station L2-S17 was selected as a case study for the modelling. The excavation is supported by the concrete diaphragm wall and one row of steel struts. The analyses investigate the effects of wall stiffness and excavation width on the excavation-induced deformations. The geotechnical parameters were selected based on the results of field and laboratory tests. The results indicate that the wall deflection and ground surface settlement increase with increasing excavation depth and width. The change in maximum wall deflection and ground settlement with considerable increase in wall stiffness is marginal, however the lower wall stiffness produces the larger wall and ground displacements. The maximum wall deflections induced by the excavation with a width of 8.2 m are 102.3, 69.4 and 44.3 mm, respectively for flexible, medium and stiff walls. The ratio of maximum ground settlement to maximum lateral wall deflection approaches to 1 with increasing wall stiffness. It was found that the wall stiffness affects the settlement influence zone. An increase in the wall stiffness results in a decrease in the settlements, an extension in the settlement influence zones and occurrence of the maximum settlements at a larger distance from the wall. The maximum of settlement for the excavation with a width of 14.7 m occurred at 6.1, 9.1 and 24.2 m away from the wall, respectively, for flexible, medium and stiff walls.
A functional external fixator system for bone deformity near the joints using worm gear was developed for curing the angle difference in fracture bones while the lengthening bar was developed for curing the differences in length, also in fracture bones. Both experiments and FE analysis were performed to compare the elastic stiffness in several loading modes and to improve the functional external fixator system for bone deformity near joints. The FE model using compressive and bending FE analysis was applied due to the angle differentiations. The results indicate that compressive stiffness value in the experiment was 175.43N/mm, bending stiffness value in the experiment was 259.74 N/mm, compressive stiffness value in the FEA was 188.67 N/mm, and bending stiffness value in the FEA was 285.71 N/mm. Errors between experiments and FEA were less than $10\%$ in both the 'compressive stiffness and the bending stiffness. The maximum stress (157 MPa) applied to the angle of the clamp was lower than the yield stress (176.4 MPa) of SUS316L. The degree of stiffness in both axial compression and bending of the new fixator are about 2 times greater than other products, with the exception of EBI (2003).

The maximum drying shrinkage velocity was proposed to verify bulk and stiffness improvement mechanism during drying according to papermaking parameters. It was based on the wet-web shrinkage behavior without the restraint of wet-web during drying, so intact drying impact could be measured. Bulking agent reduced the drying shrinkage and the maximum drying shrinkage velocity, so paper bulk increased and paper strength decreased. When adding cationic starch to stock with the bulking agent for strengthening, the bulk was increased further with additional decreasing of the drying shrinkage and the maximum drying shrinkage velocity. Paper strength also increased except tensile stiffness index with decreasing the drying shrinkage and the maximum drying shrinkage velocity. When using additional strength additives for strengthening of fiber interfaces extended by bulking agent and cationic starch, amphoteric strength additive increased paper stiffness without loss of paper bulk. It was considered that the added amphoteric strength additives were cross-linked to the stretched cationic starch and this cross-linking increased elasticity of fiber-polymer-fiber interfaces without changing the drying behavior. Paper bulk could be increased with decreasing the maximum drying shrinkage velocity. The drying shrinkage of paper also could be controlled by fiber-to-fiber bonding interfaces by the bulking agent. In this case, paper strength including stiffness was decreased by reducing fiber-to-fiber bonding but it could be improved by strengthening fiber-to-fiber interfaces with polymer complex without loss of bulk.

Spring-mass models have been widely accepted to explain the basic dynamics of human gait. Researchers found that the leg stiffness increased with gait speed to increase energy efficiency. However, the difference of leg stiffness change with gait speed between the young and the elderly has not been verified yet. In this study, we calculated the lower limb stiffness of the elderly using walking model with an axial spring. Vertical stiffness was defined as the ratio of the vertical force change to the vertical displacement change. Seven young and eight elderly subjects participated to the test. The subjects walked on a 12 meter long, 1 meter wide walkway at four different gait speeds, ranging from their self-selected speed to maximum speed randomly. Kinetic and kinematic data were collected using three force plates and motion capture cameras, respectively. The vertical stiffness of the two groups increased as a function of walking speed. Maximum walking speed of the elderly was slower than that of the young, yet the walking speed correlated well with the optimal stiffness that maximizes propulsion energy in both groups. The results may imply that human may use apparent limb stiffness to optimize energy based on spring-like leg mechanics.
This paper presents the effect of data-hold methods on stability of haptic system with a virtual wall. When a human operator interacts with virtual wall, the lager the stiffness of the virtual wall is, the more realistic the operator feels that the virtual wall is. However, if the stiffness of the virtual wall becomes extremely large, the system may be unstable. When a virtual wall is designed, it is necessary to analyze the maximum available stiffness to guarantee a stable haptic interaction. The simulation model in this paper is developed based on the haptic device model, sampler, a virtual wall model, and data hold methods to compute the maximum stiffness for stability. The effectiveness of the simulation is evaluated through comparing the results of previous studies with the results of this simulation. In addition, the effects of two data hold methods, that is, zero-order hold (ZOH) and first-order hold (FOH) on the stability are analyzed and the values of the maximum available stiffness are compared through the simulation.
When a human operator interacts with a virtual wall that is modeled as a virtual spring model, the lager the stiffness of the virtual spring is, the more realistic the operator feels that the virtual wall is. In the previous studies, it is shown that the maximum available stiffness of a virtual spring to guarantee the stability can be increased when the first-order-hold method is applied, however the effects of a human impedance on the stability are not considered. This paper presents the effects of a human impedance on stability of haptic system with a virtual spring and a first-order-hold (FOH) method. The human impedance model is modeled as a linear second-order system model. The relations between the maximum available stiffness of a virtual spring and the human impedance such as a mass, a damping and a stiffness are analyzed through the MATLAB simulation. It is shown that the maximum available stiffness is proportional to the square root of the human mass or damping respectively.
