  • This study was performed to assess the removal efficiency on nitrogen, phosphorus and organic carbon in wastewater by spatial separation and internal recycling in a modified oxidation ditch process (modified OD). The performances of the modified OD were evaluated via laboratory-scale experiments. The process was operated at hydraulic retention times of 6-48 hours and solid retention times of 17-38 days. We found that organic carbon removal efficiency increased after the modified OD operation period. T-N removal efficiency remained stable; average T-N concentration of effluent was 8.02 mg/l after modified OD operation. In contrast, T-P concentration of effluent was over 1 mg/l. Nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency of modified OD at HRT 12 hr were 83.1% and 74.1%, respectively. Also, maximum efficiency was found at SRTs from 20 to 30 days. T-N removal efficiency was 83.1% at a C/N ratio from 3.0 to 3.5. However, T-N removal efficiency decreased at C/N ratios over 3.5. Also, T-P removal efficiency increased with HRT at C/P ratios in the same condition. Maximum efficiency was 74.1% at a C/P ratio from 25 to 28. T-N removal efficiency was 79.2% and T-P removal efficiency was 65.3% after M4 mode operation (added to the internal recycle line connected to the anoxic reactor). The modified OD with spatial separation and internal recycling developed in this study is, therefore, believed to be an improvement for solving problems in the nutrient removal technologies.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the biomass and lipid production of Chlorella vulgaris and its nutrient removal capability for treatment of brewery wastewater effluent. The results indicate that the maximum biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) (91.43%) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) (83.11%) were removed by C. vulgaris with aeration in the absence of light. A maximum of 0.917 g/L of dry biomass was obtained with aeration in the dark conditions, which also demonstrated the highest amount of unsaturated fatty acids at 83.22%. However, the removal of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) with these aeration and light conditions was 9.7% and 11.86% greater than that of other conditions. The removal of BOD and COD and the production of biomass and lipids with aeration in the dark and the TN and TP removal with aeration and light were more effective than other conditions in the brewery wastewater effluent in the presence of C. vulgaris.

  • This study was performed to evaluate SND(simultaneous nitrification and denitrification)efficiency, nitrogen removal efficiency and filtration function of non-woven fabric by using submerging MBR packed with granular sulfur covered with non-woven fabric filter. Synthetic wastewater was used as influent wastewater. Concentration of $NH_4{^+}-N$ in influent was maintained about 40 mg/L and the experiment was performed in four phases according to the flow rate. Nitrogen loading rate divided four phases ranging from $0.04 kg\;NH_4{^+}-N/m^3-day$ to $0.16 kg\;NH_4{^+}-N/m^3-day$. As a result, the maximum $NH_4{^+}-N$ removal rate was accomplished at $0.142 kg\;NH_4{^+}-N/m^3-day$ in nitrogen loading of $0.147 kg\;NH_4{^+}-N/m^3-day$. Nitrification efficiency was higher than 95% in all phases. $NO_3{^-}-N$ loading rate was adjusted ranging from $0.22 kg\;NO_3{^-}-N/m^3-day$ to $0.89 kg\;NO_3{^-}-N/m^3-day$. The maximum $NO_3{^-}-N$ removal rate was accomplished up to $0.71 kg\;NO_3{^-}-N/m^3-day$ in $NO_3{^-}-N$ loading of $0.89 kg\;NO_3{^-}-N/m^3-day$. The maximum $NO_3{^-}-N$ removal efficiency was 95% in $NO_3{^-}-N$ loading of $0.22 kg\;NO_3{^-}-N/m^3-day$. T-N removal rate was 90% and concentration of T-N in effluent was 3.7 mg/L in T-N loading rate of $0.039 kg\;NO_3{^-}-N/m^3-day$. In this study, TMP in reactor with and without non-woven fabric filter were observed to define fouling of hollow-fiber membrane module. Reaching time to standard washing pressure(22 cm Hg) of two reactors were 29 days with non-woven fabric But the reactor without non-woven fabric reached standard washing pressure only after 4 days. Accordingly, non-woven fabric was demonstrated the superiority as a filtration ability. With high nitrogen removal rate and decreasing of fouling of membrane, MBR packed with granular sulfur covered with non-woven fabric filter submerging in activated sludge aeration tank can be used as an advanced treatment process.

  • The objective of this study lies in identifying the applicability of zeolite for the removal of wastewater ammonium and nitrate nitrogens. To this end, the author tracked adsorption variations as seen with the adsorption removal of wastewater ammonium and nitrate nitrogens. As a result, it was indicated that the maximum adsorption of zeolite acting on the adsorption removal of ammonium nitrogen would reach 120mg/g (weight of ammonium nitrogen divided by that of zeolite), and that Langmuir adsorption isotherm explained the adsorption of ammonium and nitrate nitrogens better than Freundlich adsorption isotherm. This means that zeolite makes ion exchanges with adsorbate for unilayer adsorption. It was also indicated that the removal efficiency of ammonium nitrogen with varying pH would be higher in the order of pH7 > pH5 > pH9 > pH3.

  • CW-4Y was identified as Stenotrophomonas sp. by morphological and physiological characteristics, and phylogenetic analysis of its 16S rDNA gene sequence. Nitrogen removal by CW-4Y was analyzed in relation to the ammonium concentration, presence of organic carbon, carbon source, and carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (C/N). Stenotrophomonas CW-4Y has heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification abilities. Stenotrophomonas CW-4Y utilized only glucose as carbon sources, and heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification were observed regardless of the type of nitrogen source. The maximum ammonium removal rate of CW-4Y was 80 $mg-N{\cdot}L^{-1}{\cdot}d^{-1}$ and its denitrification rate of 192 $mg-N{\cdot}L^{-1}{\cdot}d^{-1}$ at $NO_3{^-}-N$ (about 280 ppm) in shake culture experiments at a C/N ratio of about 15 was about 30 times higher than those of other bacteria with the same ability.

  • The performance data for eight years from a free-surface-flow constructed wetland system receiving agricultural tailwater were used to analyze denitrification rate and nitrogen treatment characteristics according to season and wetland design. Seasonal difference between growing season (March~November) and winter season (December~February) was shown in the concentration of all nitrogen species. Seasonal nitrogen treatment has similar trend with temperature and measured denitrification rate. The highest denitrification rate was measured in July, but treatment efficiency was most higher in May and June. Nitrogen absorption of vegetation could affect to these wetland performances, therefore dense population of wetland vegetation might be helpful. According to design of wetland, at least 25~50 m of wetland length was needed to decrease effluent T-N concentration to background concentration in growing season. In winter season, wetland needed much longer distance to reduce T-N concentration. Mass removal rate was continuously high through whole year because runoff coefficient was low in winter season. Applicability of constructed wetland was observed for the total maximum daily load that control T-N load.

  • Biofilm process is preferred to activated sludge process in small domestic wastewater treatment plant because of its simplicity in operation and maintenance. Column reactor filled with waste ceramics and with waste plastics was used to remove pollutants in restaurant wastewater. COD removal at 18 hours of hydraulic retention time (HRT) gave 93.7%, COD removal during the experimental period, where maximum COD removal was observed. Under same condition, average removal of total nitrogen and total phosphorus were 82.3% and 25.9%, respectively Organic and nitrogen were efficiently removed with the HRT of 18 hours or more.

  • A hybrid discharge type ozonizer, which is superposed silent and surface discharges, has been designed and manufactured to apply for Nitrogen Oxides(NO) gas removal. The ozonizer consists of three electrodes, and is classified three types of ozonizer by changing applied voltage. Investigation was carried out variance with the flow rate of supplied oxygen gas, discharge power and the sorts of superposed discharge type ozonizer. Moreover, NO(1200[ppm])/$N_2$ gas removal investigation was also conducted to apply for environment improvement field. Two kinds of NO gas removal investigations were conducted. It distinguishes the investigations into NO gas reaction method. According to these studies, maximum removal rate of 100[%] in NO gas was obtained, and 8334[ppm] and 3249[mg/h] of maximum ozone concentration and generation were also obtained respectively.

  • Bacillus species predominantly outgrown in a night soil treatment system were isolated and characterized. Cell interactions took place among them and cell population changed under various culture conditions. Maximum removal of $NH_4\;^+-N$ and cell production occurred under the conditions of 30% DO and C/N ratio of 8. Additions of 0.8% peptone and 0.3% yeast extract to a basal medium influenced the growth of isolates and the removal of $NH_4\;^+-N$ in flask culture, and metal ions such as Ca, Fe and Mg also did. During the flask experiment of nitrogen removal under an aerobic condition, active nitrification by the isolates occurred largely in 1 h with the decrease of COD and alkalinity destructed was only 74.6% of theoretical value. From the nitrogen balance, the percentage of nitrogen lost in the flask culture was estimated to be 29.0%. This conversion of ammonia to $N_2$ under an aerobic condition was confirmed by GC analysis. The B3 process using the Bacillus species seemed to have some economic advantage.

  • This study was focused to find how each factors effect on the biological nitrification in wastewater treatment under high ammonia nitrogen concentration. Batch reactors in aerobic conditions were used to test the treatment efficiency of mixed liquor, nightsoil and piggery wastewater. The results are summeried as follows; Initial ammonia nitrogen concentration and pH were the direct influencing factors of nitrite build-up. More than 250 mg NH$_{4}$$^{+}$ - N/L in initial concentration built up nitrite and then the inhibition rate to Nitrobacter was above 70 percentage. And maximum nitritation rate was showed at pH 8.3 and nitrification could be completely achieved by pH control. Temperature and dissolved oxygen were the indirect influencing factors of nitrite build-up. These were a great effect on the activity of nitrifying microbes and ammonia nitrogen removal. Maximum nitritation rate was showed at 30 $\circ $C. The effect of DO concentration was negligible at more than 3 mg/L.
