  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the loading capacity of lattice girder according to loading position. 3-point flexible strength tests were performed on three types of lattice girder, such as LG-$50{\times}20{\times}30$, LG-$70{\times}20{\times}30$, and LG-$95{\times}22{\times}32$, mainly used in Korea. Two types of loading position for each flexible strength test were used to analyze the behavior of load-deformation. In 3-point flexible strength test, the difference of the average of maximum flexible strength according to loading position had the range from 10% to 33%.

  • A series of hydrophobic dodecyl-terminated 6th-generation poly(amidoamine) dendrimer (H)-encapsulated cadmium sulfide ((CdS)n@H) nanoparticles in a co-solvent (toluene: methanol = 6.8: 3.2 v/v) are synthesized. The diameters of CdS nanoparticles within the dendrimer were estimated by analyzing the positions of the first excitonic absorption peaks of CdS in UV-vis spectra. The size of the CdS nanoparticle within the dendrimer shows a saturation value as the CdS/H ratio (n) increases, which is believed to be due to the limited physical size of the void cavity within the dendrimer. This simple and convenient method of estimating the saturation of the size of CdS in dendrimers may be useful in determining the maximum void space within other dendrimers under various solvent conditions.

  • This study propose cutting body portion-high strength mechanical fasteners to improve deformation capacity of High strength bolts, which are the mechanical fasteners used for End-plate connections. And, we report that loading test results of steel beam-to-column connection using high deformation capacity-high strength bolts in accordance with SAC2000 loading program. As a result, the initial stiffness and the maximum strength of the connection using high deformation capacity-high strength bolts, are approximately the same in comparison with those of the end-plate connection using the existing high strength bolts. But the deformation capacity of the connection is more than twice as much as those.

  • Tire chips and tire chips-soil mixtures can be used as alternative fill material in many civil engineering applications. In this study, the potential benefits of using tire chips as lightweight material to improve the bearing capacity and the settlement behavior of sand slope was investigated experimentally. For this aim, a series of direct shear and model loading tests were conducted. In direct shear tests, the effect of contents of the tire chips on the shear strength parameters of sand was investigated. Different mixing ratios of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20% by volume were used and the optimum mixing ratio was obtained. Then, laboratory model tests were performed on a model strip footing on sand slope reinforced with randomly distributed tire chips. The loading tests were carried out on sand slope with relative density of 65% and the slope angle of $30^{\circ}C$. In the loading tests the percentage of tire chips to sand was taken as same as in direct shear tests. The results indicated that at the same loading level the settlement of strip footing on sand-tire chips mixture was about 30% less than in the case of pure sand. Addition of tire chips to sand increases BCR (bearing capacity ratio) from 1.17 to 1.88 with respect to tire chips content. The maximum BCR is attained at tire chips content of 10%.

  • Although the pile Load test provides various informations to predict the bearing capacity of a pile, it has a considerable difficulty of requiring a large amount of weight to enable the test pile to be loaded sufficiently until the yielding or ultimate load is obtained. Many graphical and mathematical methods have been attempted to estimate the bearing capacity from the result of a vertical load test without loading to failure. In the previous work an analytical method to estimate the failure load using the maxi mum curvature which was based on the Southwell's theory was presented by the author. The failure load, as proposed by Crowther, should be defined as the load at which the predefined that criteria are exceeded. The allowable loads by Davisson's method and DIN 4014 were compared with the loads of piles using the maximum curvature, and this paper proposed the allowable load in which the safety factor of the maximum curvature was 2.5. As a result of study, it was reasonable to conclude that the allowable load determined by the maximum curvature method could estimate the vertical bearing capacity from the pile load test without loading to failure.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on damage evolution laws of solid-web steel reinforced concrete (SRC) T-shaped columns along the direction of the web under various loadings. Ten specimens with a scale ratio of 1/2 and a shear span ratio of 2.5 were designed and fabricated. The influences of various parameters, including the axial compression ratio, steel ratio, and loading mode, were examined. The mechanical performances including load-displacement curve and energy dissipation capacity under the monotonic and low cyclic loadings were analyzed. Compared with the monotonic loading, bearing capacity, ultimate deformation capacity, and energy dissipation capacity of the specimens decrease to some extent with the increase of the displacement amplitude and the number of loading cycle. The results show that the damage process of the SRC T-shaped column can be divided into five stages, namely non-damage, slight-damage, steadily-developing-damage, severe-damage and complete-damage. Finally, based on the Park-Ang model, a modified nonlinear damage model which combines the maximum deformation with hysteretic energy dissipation is proposed by taking into account the dynamic influence of the aforementioned parameters. The results show that the modified model in this paper is more accurate than Park-Ang model and can better describe the damage evolution of SRC T-shaped columns.

  • Air-lift biofilm reactor should be an admirable process substituting conventional activated sludge process, because of its small area requirement as well as high volumetric loading capacity and stability against loading and chemical shocks. However most of the past research on the performance of ABR was focused on the sewage treatment. This research studied the applicability of ABR to treat high strength wastewater. A bench-scale ABR was operated to treat high strength synthetic wastewater, tannery wastewater and petrochemical wastewater, and its applicability was conclusive In case of synthetic wastewater, ABR showed good performance in which the substarate removal efficiency was higher that 80% even under short HRT(1.4 hr) and high volumetric loading rate(9.3 kgCODcr/$m^3$.day). When ABR was applied to treat tannery wastewater, it was suggested that the maximum volumetric loading rate and F/M ratio should be 7.7kgCODcr/$m^3$.day, 0.76 $day^{-1}$, respectively. And high substrate removal efficiency over than 90 % was observed with 4,000 mgCODcr/L of petrochemical wastewater. Even though effluent concentration was quite high, ABR should be applicable to treat the high strength wastewater, because of its high loading capacity.

  • Cabbage is one of the most important vegetable in Korea. The cabbage production was mainly based on human labor A comprehensive research fur substituting the human labor by machines has been performed until now. In general, cabbage is cultivated on hillside in Korea. Picking up the harvested cabbages in field and carrying to a vehicle fur transportation are very laborious work. Manual transportation of cabbage is likely to damage the quality and is also a cause to increase the cost of cabbage production. This study was to develop and evaluate a prototype cabbage loader fur efficient and safe transportation of cabbage. The developed loader was a semi-tracked vehicle operated by a hydraulic system, allowing the safe transportation and loading of cabbage in a steep field. The maximum loading weight of the loader was 1.0 ton. By using two sets of safety devices attached to the loader to avoid the roll-over in a steep field, the static rollover slopes were increased up to 34.0% and 37.4% fur the left and the rear direction, respectively The maximum field speed was about 6km/hr with two cabbage pallets of 750kg at a 25% inclined field. The loading capacity of the loader was about 35 pallets/hr when picking up, carrying, and unloading two cabbage pallets for one loading operation. The loading capacity was more than 8 times in comparison with the conventional human labor. The developed loader could be used fur loading and carrying the other vegetables. The study suggested a possible approach for designing the field machines operated on hillside.

  • This study is to categorize the loading of multiple persons on a vertical building elements into three types to test the size of crowd pressure under each loading patterns. The loading patterns is divided under the combination of loading method and loading persons. The loading method is categorized into the method of instantaneous loading of hand on a force plate and the method of continuous loading. The loading persons has been composed of 1~5 persons under the loading patterns. The loading patterns is also divided into lateral loading, longitudinal loading, and agglomeration loading. The subject group has been composed of 12 males in 20s. The load measurement device(size 1800×600×36mm, capacity 20kN, rigidity 28kN/cm) has been designed and manufactured directly. To eliminate the difference of individual, the size of crowd pressure has been converted into the strength to weight ratio (maximum load/weight) for computation. The strength to weight ratio in lateral loading was about 0.91 under instantaneous loading and about 0.47 under continuous loading. The strength to weight ratio in longitudinal loading was about 0.65 under instantaneous loading and about 0.36 under continuous loading. The strength to weight ratio in agglomeration loading was about 0.65 under instantaneous loading and about 0.36 under continuous loading.

  • This study investigated the influence of scale ratio and vertical load on the seismic performance of Puzuo joints in traditional Chinese timber structures. Three low-cyclic reversed loading tests were conducted on three scaled specimens of Bujian Puzuo in Yingxian Wooden Pagoda. This study focused on the deformation patterns and analyzed seismic performance under varying scale ratios and vertical loads. The results indicated that the slip and rotational deformations of Bujian Puzuo were the primary deformations. The scale of the specimen did not affect the layer where the maximum interlayer slip occurred, but it did decrease the proportion of slip deformation. Conversely, the reducing vertical load caused the layer with the maximum slippage and the position of the damaged Dou components to shift upward, and the proportion of slip deformation increased. When the vertical load was decreased by 3.7 times, the maximum horizontal bearing capacity under positive and negative loadings, initial stiffness, and energy dissipation of the specimen decreased by approximately 60%, 58.79%, 69.62%, and 57.93%, respectively. The horizontal bearing capacity under positive loading and energy dissipation of the specimen increased by 35.63% and 131.54%, when the specimen scale was doubled and the vertical load was increased by 15 times.
