  • In this paper we study the effects of transmission noise on fixed-length coded wavelet coefficients. We use a posteriori detectors which include inter-bitplane information and determine which transmitted codeword was most likely corrupted into a received erroneous codeword We present a simple method of recovering from these errors once detected and demonstrate our restoration methodology on scalar-quantized wavelet coefficients that have been transmitted across a binary symmetric channel.

  • Images with high resolution are desired and often required in many visual applications. When resolution can not be improved by replacing sensors, either because of cost or hardware physical limits, super resolution image reconstruction method is what can be resorted to. Super resolution image reconstruction method refers to image processing algorithms that produce high quality and high resolution images from a set of low quality and low resolution images. The method is proved to be useful in many practical cases where multiple frames of the same scene can be obtained, including satellite imaging, video surveillance, video enhancement and restoration, digital mosaicking, and medical imaging. The method can be either the frequency domain approach or the spatial domain approach. Much of the earlier works concentrated on the frequency domain formulation, but as more general degradation models were considered, later researches had been almost exclusively on spatial domain formulations. The method in spatial domains has three stages: i) motion estimate or image registration, ii) interpolation onto high resolution grid and iii) deblurring process. The super resolution grid construction in the second stage was discussed in this paper. We applied the Maximum APosteriori(MAP) reconstruction method that is one of the major methods in the super resolution grid construction. Based on this method, we reconstructed high resolution images from a set of low resolution images and compared the results with those from other known interpolation methods.

  • In this paper we design an irregular low-density parity-check (LDPC) code for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, using a simple extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart method. The MIMO systems considered are optimal maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) detector. The MIMO detector and the LDPC decoder exchange soft information and form a turbo iterative receiver. The EXIT charts are used to obtain the edge degree distribution of the irregular LDPC code which is optimized for the MIMO detector. It is shown that the performance of the designed LDPC code is better than that of conventional LDPC code which was optimized for either the Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel or the MIMO channel.

  • In this paper, we investigated baseline estimation methods for remove background noise using Raman spectra from acute alcohol liver injury and acute ethanol-induced chronic liver fibrosis. Far the baseline estimation, we applied first derivative, linear programming and rolling ball method. Optimal input parameter of each method were determined by the training rate of MAP (maximum a posteriori probability) classifier. According to the experimental results, classification results baseline estimation with the rolling ball algorithm gave about 89.4%, which is very promising results for classification of acute alcohol liver injury and acute ethanol-induced chronic liver fibrosis. From these results, to determined the appropriate methods and parameters of baseline estimation impact on classification performance was confirmed.

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive MAP (Maximum A Posteriori) high-resolution image reconstruction algorithm using local statistics. In order to preserve the edge information of an original high-resolution image, a visibility function defined by local statistics of the low-resolution image is incorporated into MAP estimation process, so that the local smoothness is adaptively controlled. The weighted non-quadratic convex functional is defined to obtain the optimal solution that is as close as possible to the original high-resolution image. An iterative algorithm is utilized for obtaining the solution, and the smoothing parameter is updated at each iteration step from the partially reconstructed high-resolution image is required. Experimental results demonstrate the capability of the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, a turbo equalizer is proposed for the digital video broadcasting for terrestrial - 2nd generation (DVB-T2) system. The proposed turbo equalizer is consisted with the maximum a posteriori (MAP) and low density parity check (LDPC) decoder. The channel information for the soft-input-soft-output (SISO) MAP equalizer is based on the least square (LS) channel estimator. The performance is analyzed through computer simulations in terms of the iteration number.

  • In this paper, the general formula of disparity estimation based on Bayesian Maximum A Posteriori (MAP) algorithm is derived. The generalized formula is implemented with the plane configuration model and applied to multiple baselined stereograms. The probabilistic plane configuration model consists of independence and similarity among the neighboring disparities in the configuration. The independence probabilistic model reduces the computation and guarantees the discontinuity at the object boundary region. The similarity model preserves the continuity or the high correlation of disparity distribution. In addition, we propose a hierarchical scheme of disparity compensation in the application to multiple-view stereo images. According to the experiments, the derived formula and the proposed estimation algorithm outperformed other ones. The proposed probabilistic models are reasonable and approximate the pure joint probability distribution very well with decreasing the computations to O(n(D)) from O(n(D)4) of the generalized formula. And, the hierarchical scheme of disparity compensation with multiple-view stereos improves the performance without any additional overhead to the decoder.

  • In digital mobile communication system, the transmission errors affect the quality of output speech seriously. There are many error concealment techniques using a posteriori probability which provides information about any transmitted parameter. They need knowledge about channel transition probability as well as the 1st order Markov transition probability of codec parameters for estimation of transmitted parameters. However, in applications of mobile communication systems, the channel transition probability varies depending on nonstationary channel characteristics. The mismatch of designed channel transition probability of the estimator to actual channel transition probability degrades the performance of the estimator. In this paper, we proposed a new parameter estimator which adapts to the channel characteristics using short time average of maximum a posteriori probabilities(MAPs). The proposed scheme, when applied to the LSP parameter estimation, performed better than the conventional estimator which do not adapt to the channel characteristics.

  • Speaker verification systems can be implemented using speaker adaptation methods if the amount of speech available for each target speaker is too small to train the speaker model. This paper shows experimental results using well-known adaptation methods, namely Maximum A Posteriori (MAP) and Maximum Likelihood Linear Regression (MLLR). Experimental results using Korean speech show that MLLR is more effective than MAP for short enrollment utterances.

  • This paper presents a novel de-interlacing algorithm that can make up motion compensation errors by using maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimator. First, a proper registration is performed between a current field and its adjacent fields, and the progressive frame corresponding to the current field is found via MAP estimator based on the computed registration information. Here, in order to obtain a stable solution, well-known bilateral total variation (BTV)-based regularization is employed. Next, so-called feathering artifacts are detected on a block basis effectively. So, edge-directional interpolation is applied to the pixels where feathering artifact may happen, instead of the above-mentioned temporal de-interlacing. Experimental results show that the PSNR of the proposed algorithm is on average 4dB higher than that of previous studies and provides the better subjective quality than the previous works.
