  • This study was carried out to derive optimal design floods by Weibull-3 distribution with the annual maximum series at seven watersheds along Man, Nagdong, Geum, Yeongsan and Seomjin river systems. Adequacy for the analysis of flood data used in this study was acknowledged by the tests of Independence, Homogeneity, detection of Outliers. Parameters were estimated by the Methods of Moments and L-Moments. Design floods obtained by Methods of Moments and L-Moments using different methods for plotting positions in Weibull-3 distribution were compared by the rotative mean error and relative absolute error. It has shown that design floods derived by the method of L-moments using Weibull plotting position formula in Weibull-3 distribution are much closer to those of the observed data in comparison with those obtained by method of moments using different formulas for plotting positions in view of relative mean and relative absolute error.

  • This study was conducted to estimate the design flood by the determination of best fitting order of LH-moments of the annual maximum series at six and nine watersheds in Korea and Australia, respectively. Adequacy for flood flow data was confirmed by the tests of independence, homogeneity, and outliers. Gumbel (GUM), Generalized Extreme Value (GEV), Generalized Pareto (GPA), and Generalized Logistic (GLO) distributions were applied to get the best fitting frequency distribution for flood flow data. Theoretical bases of L, L1, L2, L3 and L4-moments were derived to estimate the parameters of 4 distributions. L, L1, L2, L3 and L4-moment ratio diagrams (LH-moments ratio diagram) were developed in this study.

  • In this study, we search some parameters well-related to floating-sinking pulse by statistical analysis, because these pulses are frequently used in clinic. Pulse signals were acquired by 3D pulse analyzer and 30 subjects consist of 15 people diagnosed as floating pulse and 15 people diagnosed as sinking pulse by oriental doctors who have over 5 years clinical experience. Then, we made a representative beat template for each subject and, through a peak detection algorithm, we calculated several pulse parameters. To find the parameters related to floating-sinking pulse, we performed statistical testing with 17 parameters through the independence sampling, t-test. As a result, there is the biggest difference between pressure, the maximum pulse pressure, diastolic area(Ad) and float-sink data. (p < .05).

  • We propose a Ku-band driver and high-power amplifier monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) employing a compensating gate bias circuit using a commercial 0.5 ${\mu}m$ GaAs pHEMT technology. The integrated gate bias circuit provides compensation for the threshold voltage and temperature variations as well as independence of the supply voltage variations. A fabricated two-stage Ku-band driver amplifier MMIC exhibits a typical output power of 30.5 dBm and power-added efficiency (PAE) of 37% over a 13.5 GHz to 15.0 GHz frequency band, while a fabricated three-stage Ku-band high-power amplifier MMIC exhibits a maximum saturated output power of 39.25 dBm (8.4 W) and PAE of 22.7% at 14.5 GHz.

  • In this paper, we propose a discriminative training algorithm for the stochastic segment model (SSM) in continuous speech recognition. As the SSM is usually trained by maximum likelihood estimation (MLE), a discriminative training algorithm is required to improve the recognition performance. Since the SSM does not assume the conditional independence of observation sequence as is done in hidden Markov models (HMMs), the search space for decoding an unknown input utterance is increased considerably. To reduce the computational complexity and starch space amount in an iterative training algorithm for discriminative SSMs, a hybrid architecture of SSMs and HMMs is programming using HMMs. Given the segment boundaries, the parameters of the SSM are discriminatively trained by the minimum error classification criterion based on a generalized probabilistic descent (GPD) method. With the discriminative training of the SSM, the word error rate is reduced by 17% compared with the MLE-trained SSM in speaker-independent continuous speech recognition.

  • The characteristics of image quality of a color CRT (cathode ray tube) monitor are studied by changing the contrast and brightness levels. The resolution is assessed by SQRI (square root integral) measured at 9 different combinations of the contrast and brightness levels. The chromaticity coordinates and luminances of red-green-blue channels as a function of the digital value are measured at these combinations and the relationships among the constant-channel chromaticity, color gamut, maximum luminance of a white point with the channel independence are analyzed. From the results, the optimized combination of levels is obtained.

  • This paper examines the parameter observability of a calibration system that consrains a mobile platform to a planar table to take the calibration data. To improve the parameter observability, we find the optimal configurations providing the calibration with maximum contribution. The QR-decomposition is used to compute the optimal configurations that maximize the linear independence of rows of an observation matrix. The calibration system is applied to the parallel type manipulator constructed for a machining center. The calibration results show that all the necessary kinematic parameters assigned in a Stewart-Gough platform are identifiable and convergent to desirable accuracy.

  • Current trend of design technologies shows engineers to objectify or automate the given decision-making process. The numerical optimization is an example of such technologies. However, in numerical optimization, the uncertainties are uncontrollable to efficiently objectify or automate the process. To better manage these uncertainties, Taguchi method, reliability-based optimization and robust optimization are being used. Based on the independence axiom of axiomatic design theory that illustrates the relationship between desired specifications and design parameters, the designs can be classified into three types: uncoupled, decoupled and coupled. To best approach the target performance with the maximum robustness is one of the main functional requirements of a mechanical system. Most engineering designs are pertaining to either coupled or decoupled ones, but these designs cannot currently accomplish a real robustness thus a trade-off between performance and robustness has to be made. In this research, the game theory will be applied to optimize the trade-off.

  • This study was carried out in order to investigate the correlation among test items of export raw silk. The results obtained from the study are summarized as follows. 1. The highest correlation was between evenness and low evenness in case of the filaments made of autumn cocoons and the coefficient of correlation was 0.854. 2. Among following items, viz.; evenness and cleanness, neatness and low neatness and elongation and cohesion, the correlation phisically was not acknowledged, but the coefficients of correlation were high figures. 3. Poor correlation existed between following items, viz.; size deviation and maximum deviation, evenness and low evenness, neatness and low neatness, cleanness and low neatness. 4. It is considered that the high correlation exists between tenacity and elongation, but in this study the correlation existed among some items. 5. In this study it is a new fact that the correlation between neatness and cohesion as well as low neatness and tenacity existed enough highly. 6. As a conclusion the independence of ten items tested at present was acknowledged.
