The effects of changes in area and location of fire source, fire growth rate, and volume of compartment on the major fire characteristics, including heat release rate, in closed compartment fires were examined. To this end, a fire simulation using Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) was performed for ISO 9705 room with a closed opening. As main result, it was found that the changes in the area and location of fire source did not significantly affect the thermal and chemical characteristics inside the compartment, such as maximum heat release rate, total heat release, maximum temperature at upper layeras well as species concentrations. However, increasinthe fire growth rate and volume of compartment resulted in increase of the maximum heat release rate and total heat release, decrease in the limiting oxygen concentration and increase in the maximum CO concentration. Finally, a methodology for the application of fire growth curves to closed compartment fires was proposed by deriving the correlation of the maximum heat release rate expressed as a function of the fire growth rate and the volume ratio of compartment based on the ISO 9705 room.

A cylindrical constant volume combustion bomb is used to investigate the combustion characteristics and to analyze the heat quantity of homogeneous charge methane-air mixture under various initial pressures, excess air ratios and ignition times. As the overall pressure increase, the values of maximum combustion pressure, maximum heat release rate and cumulative heat release have been increased. But it is not very meaningful to compare with some values such as maximum combustion pressure, maximum heat release rate and cumulative heat release for different overall pressure due to the different heat energy of supplied fuel. So the each value is needed to be compared with normalized value, which is divided by the entered fuel energy. To analyze the heat quantity, some definitions including the CHR ratio, the UHC ratio and the HL ratio are needed and are calculated. As the overall pressure increase, the CHR ratios and the UHC ratios have been decreased, while the HL ratios have been increased. The CHR ratio of 300 ms has the higher value than that of 10000ms, and the HL ratios of 300 ms have a lower value.

To measure the full scale fire test and heat release rate of bed mattresses according to the building compartment space, a fire test was performed using the Standard test method to determine the heat release rate of mattresses and mattress sets (KS F ISO 12949: 2011). Both test locations showed similar fire growth until approximately 3 minutes after burner ignition. After 3 minutes, the heat release rate in the test room was higher than the open calorimeter. For bed mattresses (SS), the maximum heat release rate in the open calorimeter was 735 kW and the maximum heat release rate in the test room was 992 kW. For bed mattresses (Q), the heat release rate in the test room increased more rapidly than the open calorimeter. The maximum heat release rate in the open calorimeter was 1,087 kW (346 s) and the maximum heat release rate in the test room was 2,127 kW (287 s). The difference between the maximum heat release rate and the measurement time according to the test location was confirmed.

Accurate heat release analysis of cylinder pressure data is important for evaluating performance in the development of diesel engine However, traditional single zone first law heat release model(SZM) has significant limitations due to the simplified assumption of uniform charge and neglecting local temperature inside cylinder during combustion process. In this study. heat release rate based on single zone heat release model has been evaluated by comparison with computational analysis results using Fire code which is based on multi-dimensional model(MDM). To overcome limitations due to simplicity of single zone assumption. especially the influence of specific heat ratio on gross heat release has been esteemed and newly suggested were the equation $\gamma$= $\gamma$(${T/T}_{max}$) which describes the variations of gases thermodynamic properties with mean temperature and maximum mean temperature inside cylinder Single zone heat release model applied with this equation is shown to give very good results over whole range of operating conditions when compared with computational analysis results based on multi-dimensional model.
A study on combustion characteristics using emulsified fuel in a diesel engine were performed experimentally. In this paper, the experiments were performed at engine speed 1800rpm, emulsion ratios were 0%, 10%, 20%, and main measured items were specific fuel consumption, cylinder pressure, rate of pressure rise, rate of heat release etc. The obtained conclusions were as follows. 1) Specific fuel consumption increased maximum by 19.8% at low load, but was not affected at full load. 2) Rate of pressure rise and rate of heat release were about the same in the case of 10% and 20% of emulsion ratio. 3) Cylinder Pressure increased 9.6%, rate of pressure rise increased 53.4% in case of emulsion ratio 20% at full load. 4) Rate of heat release increased 72.4% in case of emulsion ratio 20% at full load.

To study the combustion characteristics of forest fuel by fire intensity, the experiment of combustion characteristics on Pinus Densiflora living leaves, which is the weakest species to the forest fire, was delivered, using variables of heat flux(25 kW/$m^2$, 50 kW/$m^2$, 75 kW/$m^2$). With the equipment of Cone calorimeter, the characteristics of ignition, heat, smoke release, CO and $CO_2$ release, and mass loss were analyzed. Pinus Densiflora living leaves containing moisture of 60.66% were not ignited at the heat flux of variables 25 kW/$m^2$, 50 kW/$m^2$, 75 kW/$m^2$. In proportion to the heat flux value, heat release amount and heat release rate reached maximum value rapidly: higher variables came to the maximum by the half rapidity and the maximum value were twice higher than the former lower variables respectively. As for the smoke release, the less heat flux the variable had, the more smoke release it had, due to incomplete combustion. The release amount of CO and $CO_2$ had more maximum value as the heat flux increased and more radiant heat meaned more carbon oxide. When the forest fire breaks out, therefore, a great amount of CO and $CO_2$ will be released by Pinus Densiflora.
The present study has been conducted to investigate the fire combustion properties and fire behavior of an IEEE-383 qualified flame retardant cable. The reference reaction rate and reference temperature which are commonly used in pyrolysis model of fire propagation process was obtained by the thermo-gravimetric analysis of the cable component materials. The mass fraction of FR-PVC sheath abruptly decreased near temperature range of $250{\sim}260^{\circ}C$ and its maximum reaction rate was about $2.58{\times}10^{-3}$[1/s]. For the XLPE insulation of the cable, the temperature causing maximum mass fraction change was ranged about $380{\sim}390^{\circ}C$ and it has reached to the maximum reaction rate of $5.10{\times}10^{-3}$[1/s]. The flame retardant cable was burned by a pilot flame meker buner and the burning behavior of the cable was observed during the fire test. Heat release rate of the flame retardant cable was measured by a laboratory scale oxygen consumption calorimeter and the mass loss rate of the cable was calculated by the measured cable mass during the burning test. The representative value of the effective heat of combustion was evaluated by the total released energy integrated by the measured heat release rate and burned mass. This study can contribute to study the electric cable fire and provide the pyrolysis properties for the computational modeling.

The influences of number of spark plug on ignitability, combustion characteristics and combustion promotion effect were examined to establish the design conception of spark ignition system for lean burn. Ignitability was increased remarkably by increasing of number of spark plug at combustion wall. Combustion duration was shortened and maximum combustion pressure was increased in accordance with increasing of spark plug number. Rate of overall combustion promotion considered of combustion duration and combustion pressure was 28% in two point ignition and 40% in four point ignition. It was verified that heat release, heat loss and combustion duration were affected by flame area, heat transfer area and maximum flame travel distance respectively.

The study performed an actual fire experiment in order to propose the heat release rate of automobile that is the most basic architectural element for the fire safety design in a tunnel, whose importance has been recognized as the underground traffic tunnels are planned in Korean metropolitan cities. The heat release rate of a van is measured by the large scale calorimeter, in which the law of oxygen consumption is applied, and the fire expansion characteristics in a tunnel by placing two passenger cars nearby one another in the tunnel. As the results, the heat release rate of the van was revealed to be 5.9 MW, and carbon monoxide was emitted 482 ppm at a maximum. In case of two passenger car experiment for the fire expansion characteristics, the adjacent car was ignited about 3 minutes 30 seconds after the fire occurrence, and the complete fire was developed after 15 minutes. The maximum heat release was 9 MW. The results from the actual fire experiment can be an important input data for future quantitative analysis as well as an element applicable to a tunnel disaster preventive equipment design.
