  • In mode choice decision, travelers consider not only travel time but also reliability of its modes. In this paper, reliability was expressed in terms of standard deviation and maximum delay that were measured based on triangular distribution. In order to estimate value of time and value of reliability, the Multinomial and Nested Logit models were used. The analysis results revealed that reliability is an important factor affecting mode choice decisions. Elasticity is used to estimate the impacts of the different policies and system improvements for water transportation mode. Among these policies, decision maker can assess and select the best alternative by doing the benefit and cost analysis based on a new market share, the value of time, and the value of reliability. Finally, a set of promising policies and system improvement of the water transportation were proposed.

  • This study estimated the delay factor, which is the ratio of travel time at the speed limit and travel time at the actual speed using real-time traffic information in Seoul. The actual travel speed on the road was lower than the maximum speed of the road and the travel speed was the slowest during the rush hour. As a result of accessibility analysis based on travel speed during the rush hour, the travel time at the actual speed was 37.49 minutes on average. However, the travel time at the speed limit was 15.70 minutes on average. This result indicated that the travel time at the actual speed is 2.4 times longer than that at the speed limit. In addition, this study proposedly defined the delay factor as the ratio of accessibility by the speed limit and accessibility to actual travel speed. As a result of delay factor analysis, the delay factor of Seoul was 2.44. The results by the administrative district showed that the delay factor in the north part areas of the Han River is higher than her south part areas. Analysis results after applying the relationship between road density and traffic volume showed that as the traffic volume with road density increased, the delay factor decreased. These results indicated that it could not be said that heavy traffic caused longer travel time. Therefore, follow-up research is needed based on more detailed information such as road system shape, road width, and signal system for finding the exact cause of increased travel time.

  • This study developed an algorithm for real-time signal control based on the detection system that can collect sectional travel time. The signal control variable is maximum queue length per cycle and this variable has a sectional meaning. When a individual vehicle pass through the detector, we can gather the vehicle ID and the detected time. Therefor we can compute the travel time of an individual vehicle between consecutive detectors. This travel time informations were bisected including the delay and not. We can compute queue withdrawing time using this bisection and the max queue length is computed using the deterministic delay model. The objective function of the real-time signal control aims equalization of queue length for all direction. The distribution of the cycle is made by queue length ratios.

  • In order to analyze the influence of the noise on a cross-well traveltime tomography to detect a small scale low velocity body in a homogeneous medium, the first arrival travel times were computed one a tunnel model by a finite-difference ray tracing scheme. Three different types and four different intensity levels of white noises were added to the computed first arrival travel times, and velocity tomograms were constructed using an iterative inversion method (SIRT). Tomograms with the noise intensity up to 10% of the maximum traveltime delay in the tunnel model, showed the exact location of the tunnel. However, the velocity shown at the tunnel location was not close to air velocity but only slightly less than the velocity of the background medium. The additive random noise showed significantly less degree of influence on the resulting tomogram than the source- and receiver consistent noise.

  • A baggage handling system (BHS) in airport is an unified system for moving the passengers' baggage in designated time. Input baggage from the check-in counter travels to the baggage claim area or cargo handling terminal through this system. In particular, entryway BHS consists of conveyors, X-ray and sorters such as tilt-tray to send the baggage to departing airplane and it could have various problems for handling certain amount of baggage in restricted time such as baggage jamming at certain merge point. This causes systemic error such as delay of the time, omissions of the baggage and even breakdown of the equipment and inefficiency. Also the increasing maximum time of the baggage passing through the BHS could delay the flight schedule and finally decrease the service level. Thus, the algorithm for controlling the flow of the merge is essential to the system. The window reservation algorithm is the one of the most frequently used methods to control the merge configuration. Above all, the reserve location, so called reserve ahead point, that allocates the window is important for the performance of the algorithm. We propose the modified window reservation algorithm and the best reserve locations by changing the reserve ahead point in the induction conveyors. The effect of various reserve ahead points such as the capacity and utility of the system were analyzed and the most effective reserve ahead point combination was found. The total baggage processing time and the utilization of the tilt-tray are properly considered when choosing the optimal Reserve ahead point combination. In the layout of this study, the configuration of four conveyors merged into one tilt-tray is studied and simulation analysis is done by AutoMod(R), 3D simulation software. Through the simulation, the window reservation algorithm is effectively operated with the best combination of reserve ahead point which reduces the maximum baggage travel time.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze traffic flow characteristics according to the market penetration rate (MPR) of autonomous vehicles (AV) on road sections where bus rapid transit (BRT) is actually operating. Furthermore, the maximum traffic volume was set through estimation of future traffic demand, and traffic flow characteristics were analyzed through traffic simulation for each scenario considering of a combination of BRT introduction and AV's MPR. To test statistical significance, Kruskal-Willis test and Jonckheere-Terpstra test were used to examine the impact of the market penetration rate of Autonomous vehicles on travel time and delay time etc. At the same time, the existence of the order relationship among travel time data according to the market penetration rate of autonomous vehicle was examined. As a result of the analysis, it was founded that the travel time significantly decreased as the MPR of AV increases in both intermittent flow and continuous flow environments. In particular, in the case of continuous flow, the law of increasing returns was satisfied in the effect of increasing travel speed and reducing travel time as the MPR of AV increases. The results of this study are expected to be used as a basic information for design plans for road reconstruction and space utilization after the commercialization of AV in the future.

  • Traffic accidents at highway-rail crossing result in larger social and economic damages than the accidents at the typical highway intersections. The traditional control and warning systems of the highway-rail crossing have limitations in that 1) they do not recognize the differences of the trains' arrival times because they rely on the distance-based control system, rather than the time-based one, and 2) thereby they usually cause longer delays of vehicles and pedestrians at the highway-rail crossings. The objective of this study is to develop a time-based railroad crossing control system which takes into account the speed and expected arrival time of trains. using the spot speeds and acceleration rates of trains measured at three points, the developed system was found to be able to accurately estimate the arrival time of train. VISSIM simulation package was utilized to compare system effect of the developed time-based railroad crossing control system with that of the conventional distance-based one. It was found that the developed time-based railroad crossing control system reduced the average travel time, maximum delay length, average delay time, and average number of stop-experienced vehicles as much as 7.0$\%$, 75.6$\%$, 12.7$\%$, and 60.0$\%$, respectively, compared with those from the conventional distance-based one.

  • Existing shortest-path algorithms mainly consider a single attribute. But traveler actually chooses a route considering not single attribute but various attributes which are synthesized travel time, route length, personal preference, etc. Therefore, to search the optimal path, these attributes are considered synthetically. In this study route searching algorithm which selects the maximum utility route using discrete choice model has developed in order to consider various attributes. Six elements which affect route choice are chosen for the route choice model and parameters of the models are estimated using survey data. A multinomial logit models are developed to design the function of route choice model. As a result, the model which has route length, delay time, the number of turning as parameter is selected based on the significance test. We use existing shortest path algorithm, which can reflect urban transportation network such as u-turn or p-turn, and apply it to the real network.
