  • This study was performed to evaluate the fracture toughness of seven commercially available dental ceramics by indentation fracture method. All specimens were fabricated to the final dimensions of approximately 12mm in diameter 2mm in thickness. The characte-ristic indentation dimensions of Vickers or Knoop indentation were measured to calculate the fracture toughness values and Young’s moduli. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. Young’s modulus and Vickers hardness of Vita In-Ceram showed the maximum values of $154.4{\pm}49.2$ Gpa and $12.60{\pm}0.71$Gpa, respectively. Results of Scheff test exhibited the significant difference between Vita In-Ceram group and others(p<0.01). 2. Maximum fracture toughness of $2.562{\pm}0.37 MPam^{1/2}$ for Vita In-Ceram and the maxi-mum one of $0.908{\pm}0.132MPam^{1/2}$ for Vitadur-N were calculated. Results of Scheff test showed the significant difference between Vita In-Ceram group and Vita Hi-Ceram(p<0.05) : also between Vita In-Ceram or Vita Hi-Ceram and others(p<0.01). 3. The alumina-based core ceramics showed the aspect of Palmqvist crack for the indentation load of 49.0N, but others showed the median/lateral crack for the indentation load of 9.8N.

  • This study examined the ideal image and fashion of Korean women in the 1970s from a socio-cultural context. This study used information on the 1970s politics, economy, and culture provided by "Chosun Ilbo" and "Yosungjungang" as well as their presentation of the ideal image and fashion for Korean women in the 1970s. The ideal image and fashion of women were considered from the viewpoint of Hamilton's Meta-theory. The ideal image of women in the 1970s is divided into two aspects. The image from the traditional Confucian perspective was prevalent and restricted the lives of women to housekeeping chores. On the contrary, women have increasingly participated in society vis-$\grave{a}$-vis education and employment opportunities to present a progressive image of women. These aspects coexisted during the turmoil of social change. Progressive women had money to buy clothes because they were economically independent. These women embraced styles that included mini, midi, maxi, and bell-bottom pants. Further, pants were developed into different styles such as pant suits. T-shirts and blue jeans as casual wear were very popular among the youth. At the end of the 1970s, the tailored look and the big look (which copied men's clothing) were in fashion. Masculine styles such as wide shoulders with pads and neckties strengthened gender equality. Other fashions were dominated by feminine styles described as beautiful, sweet, and elegant that reflected Korean society's tendency to regard women as sex objects. Clothing that exposed the body highlights this sexual objectification aspect. Women wore miniskirts, hot pants, and bikinis because they wanted to enhance their sex appeal, propagating the view of women as sex objects. In conclusion, all aspects of society and culture were closely interrelated with a fashion style that reflected the values of those aspects.

  • Background: RB1 (retinoblastoma 1) was reportedly one of the major determinative factors for sensitivity to taxanes in previous studies. In this study, we investigated the influence of RB1 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on the efficacy of platinum-taxane regimens in advanced NSCLC patients. Materials and Methods: 234 cases of patients with advanced NSCLC who were treated with first-line platinum-taxane agents were enrolled in this study. Genomic DNA was extracted from patients' peripheral blood samples using a QIAamp DNA Maxi Kit, and genotyped by iSelect HD Bead-Chip. Results: Regression analyses were conducted through the univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards model in the 234 patients. The results showed that of the eight RB1 tagSNPs, only rs4151510 was a positive predictive factor for the advanced NSCLC patients treated with platinum taxanes regimen. The patients with G/G genotype of RB rs4151510 had longer overall survival (OS) than the non-G/G genotype (p=0.018). The histology was also correlated with OS in the whole advanced NSCLC patients. Three tagSNPs of RB1, rs4151510, rs4151465, rs9568036 were significantly associated with OS in the advanced NSCLC patients with squamous cell histology using Kaplan-Meier overall survival analysis stratified by histology. Conclusions: RB1 genomic variants were correlated with the efficacy of platinum-taxanes regimen. RB rs4151510 is an independent factor of the prognosis of NSCLC patients receiving platinum-taxane chemotherapy.

  • In the settlement analysis of shallow foundation soil properties, loads and soil strata involve many uncertainties so it is necessary to do analysis of settlement that considers the probabilistic properties of each variable. This study is performed to probabilistic analysis for settlement of shallow foundation consisted of individual footings by using Monte Carlo Method. To consider the uncertainty of variables, both the soil properties and loads are assumed to be normal distribution random variables and get settlement mean and coefficient of variation of individual footing. And the settlement of each individual footing is also assumed to be normal distribution. Settlement of each individual footing which considers the probability of soft soil pockets in soil strata follows Markov process. Then it is performed to do sensitivity analysis which is involved to excess probability of allowable criteria of maxi mum settlement and differential settlement according to varity of each variable. It is thought to be proper that the settlement analysis of shallow foundation should be analyzed considering uncertainty of variables and soil stratum conditions.

  • Human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBM-MSCs) represent a potentially valuable cell type for clinical therapeutic applications. The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of long-term culturing (up to $10^{th}$ passages) of hBM-MSCs from eight individual amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients, focusing on functional ion channels. All hBM-MSCs contain several MSCs markers with no significant differences, whereas the distribution of functional ion channels was shown to be different between cells. Four types of $K^+$ currents, including noise-like $Ca^{+2}$-activated $K^+$ current ($IK_{Ca}$), a transient outward $K^+$ current ($I_{to}$), a delayed rectifier $K^+$ current ($IK_{DR}$), and an inward-rectifier $K^+$ current ($K_{ir}$) were heterogeneously present in these cells, and a TTX-sensitive $Na^+$ current ($I_{Na,TTX}$) was also recorded. In the RT-PCR analysis, Kv1.1,, heag1, Kv4.2, Kir2.1, MaxiK, and hNE-Na were detected. In particular, ($I_{Na,TTX}$) showed a significant passage-dependent increase. This is the first report showing that functional ion channel profiling depend on the cellular passage of hBM-MSCs.

  • This study was conducted to estimate the contents of heavy metals 'Hg, Cd, Pb, As, Zn, Cu, Cr, Mn' in some vegetables which were produced in Korea. The levels of heavy metals were determined using a mercury analyzer, an ICP(inductively coupled plasma spectrometer) and an AAS(atomic absorption spectrophotometer) after wet digestion. The values of heavy metals "mean(mini.~maxi.)" ppm(mg/kg) in some vegetables(raw of perilla leaf, chard, small water dropwort, water dropwort, kale, bud of aralia, pumpkin(round type) and pumpkin(long type) were as follows : Hg : 0.0021(0.0006~0.0054)mg/kg, Cd : 0.0035(ND*~0.0377)mg/kg, Pb : 0.0191(0.0023~0.0928)mg/kg, As : 0.0757(ND~0.5294)mg/kg, Zn : 2.6299(0.4478~6.8567)mg/kg, Cu : 1.0261(0.2046~8.9417)mg/kg, Cr : 0.1535 (0.0240~0.4982)mg/kg, Mn : 3.2476(0.3283~9.8280)mg/kg. This results showed that Mn was generally simillar to previous reports and Cd, Hg, Pb were lower than other reseaches, but As was little higher or Zn, Cu, Cr were higher than the levels of those reported contents in some vegetables on domestic supermarkets in Korea, Although tolerable limit of Hg and Cd is not in a regulation of WHO/FAO, these mean levels(Pb, As, Zn, Cu) are lower than recommended levels of WHO/FAO, Pb "0.1~2.0" mg/kg, As "1.0" mg/kg, Zn "5.0" mg/kg and Cu "0.1~50"mg/kg from vegetables in 'the tolerable contents of food' by the FAO/WHO, therefor some vegetables has set to evaluate their safeties.

  • This paper statistically analyses the freezing soil by frost group and frost depth in Korea with data from soil testing in the Korea National Housing Corporation, the climate data provided by the Central Weather Office and the data on the frost depth from the National Construction Laboratory Institute. In this paper, freezing variable are analysed such as percentage finer than 0.02 m by weight, plasticity index, freezing index, water contents of soil and frost depth etc‥‥ The result of the analysis is as follows. 1) The frost depth of Korea depends on the properties of soil rather thank the characte fistic of area. 2) The distribution map of design freezing index in 57 cities is drawn up with the maxi- mum freezing index, during past 14 years, calculated by the average of the air temperature observed four times(03 : 00.09 00, 15 : 00, 21 : 00) a day. 3) By correcting the OLS line estimated from the relationship between freezing index and frost depth, a method of utlizing the line with the upper confidence limit of 99.9% int-distribution as predicted maximum frost depth is newly introduced.

  • Two main characteristics of VBR MPEG video traffic are different statistics according to different picture types and the periodic traffic pattern due to GOP structure. Especially, the I-pictures at the beginning of each GOP generate $$\mu$h more traffic than other pictures. When several VBR Mpeg video sources are superposed, the I-picture starting times of these sources may significantly affect the cell loss characteristics of ATM $$\mu$tiplexers. In this paper, we propse a performance model for ATM $$\mu$tiplexers with VBR MPEG video sources whose starting times are arbitrary given. For analysis, both single and superposed source traffic are modeled as NDPPs (non-deterministic periodic processes), and the ATM $$\mu$tiplexer is modeled as a U-state NDPPD/D/1/B queueing system. It is hown that the numerical results are very close to the si$$\mu$ation results. From the relationships between the starting tiem distributions and the corresponding $$\mu$tiplexer performances, some considerations for designing a scheduling policy in order to obtain the maxi$$\mu$ $$\mu$tiplexing gain are presented.

  • Although the pile Load test provides various informations to predict the bearing capacity of a pile, it has a considerable difficulty of requiring a large amount of weight to enable the test pile to be loaded sufficiently until the yielding or ultimate load is obtained. Many graphical and mathematical methods have been attempted to estimate the bearing capacity from the result of a vertical load test without loading to failure. In the previous work an analytical method to estimate the failure load using the maxi mum curvature which was based on the Southwell's theory was presented by the author. The failure load, as proposed by Crowther, should be defined as the load at which the predefined that criteria are exceeded. The allowable loads by Davisson's method and DIN 4014 were compared with the loads of piles using the maximum curvature, and this paper proposed the allowable load in which the safety factor of the maximum curvature was 2.5. As a result of study, it was reasonable to conclude that the allowable load determined by the maximum curvature method could estimate the vertical bearing capacity from the pile load test without loading to failure.

  • Quercetin (3,3',4',5,7-pentahydroxyflavone) is an attractive therapeutic flavonoid for cancer treatment because of its beneficial properties including apoptotic, antioxidant, and antiproliferative effects on cancer cells. However, the exact mechanism of action of quercetin on ion channel modulation is poorly understood in bladder cancer 253J cells. In this study, we demonstrated that large conductance $Ca^{2+}$-activated $K^+$ ($BK_{Ca}$) or MaxiK channels were functionally expressed in 253J cells, and quercetin increased $BK_{Ca}$ current in a concentration dependent and reversible manner using a whole cell patch configuration. The half maximal activation concentration ($IC_{50}$) of quercetin was $45.5{\pm}7.2{\mu}m$. The quercetin-evoked $BK_{Ca}$ current was inhibited by tetraethylammonium (TEA; 5 mM) a non-specific $BK_{Ca}$ blocker and iberiotoxin (IBX; 100 nM) a $BK_{Ca}$-specific blocker. Quercetin-induced membrane hyperpolarization was measured by fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) with voltage sensitive dye, bis (1,3-dibutylbarbituric acid) trimethine oxonol ($DiBAC_4$2(3); 100 nM). Quercetin-evoked hyperpolarization was prevented by TEA. Quercetin produced an antiproliferative effect ($30.3{\pm}13.5%$) which was recovered to $53.3{\pm}10.5%$ and $72.9{\pm}3.7%$ by TEA and IBX, respectively. Taken together our results indicate that activation of $BK_{Ca}$ channels may be considered an important target related to the action of quercetin on human bladder cancer cells.
