  • Aquatic plants grow in water with photosynthesis and purify water quality as taking organic and inorganic matter in water. Polluted water in stagnant stream channel where nutritive salts load is great can be purified by activities of aquatic plants. Aquatic plants should be fixed to bed easily to plant and sustainable environment is needed. So in this study, Mattress/Filter system is suggested to plant aquatic plant in stagnant stream channel. In the result of study, coverage of Phragmites australis, Zizania latifolia and Typha angustifolia which planted in mattress was $78\%,\;62\%\;and\;82\%$ and numbers of species in each mattress system were 7, 11, 3. The evenness index of each mattress system was 0.86, 0.91 and 0.79 and diversity index of each mattress system was 1.67. 2.18 and 0.87. Removal rates of phosphorus at Phragmites australis, Zizania latifolia and Typha angustifolia which planted in mattress were $68.7\%,\;62.7\%,\;55.3\%$ and removal rates of nitrogen of them were $79.8\%,\;74.7\%,\;64.9\%$. The removal rate of nitrogen was greater than phosphorus at all system and both removal rates were greater at Phragmites australis than at Zirania latifolia and at Typha angustifolia the rate was the least. Removal rates of $PO_4^{-3},\;NH_4-N,\;NO_{3-}N$ at Phragmites australis were $57.4\%,\;52.8\%,\;47.8\%$ and at Zizania latifolia were $82.6\%,\;77.2\%,\;67.5\%$ and at Typha angustifolia were $80.6\%,\;73.7\%,\;64.3\%$. It seems that removal effect is great by the planted mattress system.

  • Mattress foundations using geogrids are often used on soil foundations to increase the supporting capability of a mattress-soil foundation system, in which the mattress foundation trasmits a point load applied above to a wider area of the soil foundation underneath. To examine this load dispersion capability of the mattress foundation, model experiments were carried out on lab-floor. Expecially, the effect of the thickness of the mattress and the subgrade modulus of the soil foundation on load dispersion are considered. The load distribution and the tensile force generated on geogrid of the upper part of the mattress are examined in the paper.

  • Revetment Mattress/Filter is the porous structure filled fillers in meshed structure so that it cail use the fillers of various sizes and form various pores. The porous structure of the Mattress/Filter increases drainage so that it decreases the energy and erosion of flow therefore the tractive force is decreased and the erosion of revetment is mitigated. The filler of Mattress/Filter uses gravels, waste concretes and slags so that the surface is rough and the roughness coefficient increases and the increase of the roughness coefficient decreases flow velocity and tractive force. On the other hand Mattress/Filter and vegetation are combined so that the increase of roughness coefficient and flow velocity still more progress therefore the effect of decrease of tractive force is increased after a few months have passed since the Mattress/Filter is constructed so that the vegetation is developed and be stabilized. The vegetation channel of Mattress/Filter is set tip and the inspection comes into operation by varing flowrate and vegetation spacing to examine these characters of the Mattress/Filter The coefficient of flow velocity U/U*' is decreased exponentially as vegetation esity aH' or $\lambda$ is increased and the coefficient of friction f is increased as vegetation desity aH' is increased but decreased as the coefficient of flow velocity U/U*' is increased. The effective tractive force $F_0$ is decreased exponentially as the vegetation desity aH' is increased. From the inspection the results are obtained that the porous and vegetation structure of the revetment Mattress/Filter system increases the coefficient of friction of revetment so that flow velocity and effective are decreased therefore greatly contributes the stability of the revetment.

  • Water quality improvement in mattress/filter system using porous material like slag from industrial activity and zeolite that has been studied for environment improvement and pollution abatement is very useful in polluted stagnant stream channel. Slag is consisted of CaO, $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$ and $Fe_2O_3$. Slag with large specific surface area of porosity has been used such as sludge settling and adsorptive materials. Because slag is porous, it can be used for purification filter. As slag is used as filled materials of mattress/filter system and the system has good advantages for the waste water treatment, water recycling, and the improvement of water quality at the same time and so on. Because zeolite has much advantage of cation exchange, adsorption, catalyst and dehydration characteristics, It is used for environment improvement of livestock farms, treatment of artificial sewage and waste water, improvement of drinking water quality, radioactive waste disposal and radioactive material pollution control. In this study, according to verifying effects of water quality improvement of fill materials by porosity that 38.6%, 45.8% and 49.8% respectively in the stagnant stream channel, water quality monitoring of inflow and outflow was conducted on pH, DO, BOD, COD, SS, T-N and T-P. Mattress/filter system was able to accelerate water quality improvement by biofilter as waste water flows through gap of mattress/filter fill materials and by contact catalysis, absorption, catabolism by biofilm. Mattress/filter system used slag and zeolite forms biofilm easily and accelerates adsorption of organic matter. As a result, mattress/filter system increases water self-purification and accelerates water quality improvement available for stream water clean-up.

  • Air mattress is now used widely to prevent the pressure ulcer by reducing the localized pressure peaks. In this paper an air-cell mattress and its pressure control method based on an approximate anthropometric model are presented. The air-cell mattress has eighteen cylindrical air cells made of porous material allowing air leakage to contribute in reducing the development of pressure ulcer by lowering the pressure peak, temperature and humidity. To determine an optimal air-cell pressure appropriate for each user, we divide the parts of the body into four sections such as head, trunk, hip, and leg. Then, the pressure of each section is independently calculated from the weight of each part based on the individual body height and weight and the approximate anthropometric model. Air supply system for the air-cell mattress is implemented by using four electronic solenoid valves and an air compressor, and it is driven by a real-time micro-controller. The experimental results with seven subjects shows that the proposed air-cell mattress is effective for the prevention of the pressure ulcer.

  • The present study proposes a system that can detect sleep-disordered breathing automatically using an air mattress and oxygen saturation. A thin air mattress was fabricated to reduce discomfort during sleep, and respiration signals were acquired. The system was configured to be synchronized with a polysomnography to receive signals simultaneously with other bio-signals. The present study has been conducted with nine adult male and female patients with sleep-disordered breathing, and sleep-disordered breathing events have been detected by applying the signals acquired from the subjects to the rule-based detection algorithm. The sensitivity and positive predictive values were found to evaluate the performance of the system, which are 91.4% and 89.7% for all events, respectively. The comparison of apnea hypopnea index(AHI) between the polysomnography and the proposed method showed squared R-value of 0.9. This study presents the possibility of detecting sleep-disordered breathing at hospitals or homes using the proposed system.

  • For home healthcare, the unconstrained measurement of physiological signal is highly required to avoid the inconvenience of users. The recording and analysis of the fundamental parameters during sleep like respiration and heart beat provide valuable information on his/her healthcare. Using the air mattress sensor system, the respiration and heart beat movements can be measured without any harness or sensor on the subject's body. The differential measurement technique between two air cells is adopted to enhance the sensitivity. The balancing tube between two air cells is used to increase the robustness against postural changes during the measurement period. The meaningful frequency range could be selected by the pneumatic filter with balancing tube. ECG (Electrocardiography) and respiration sensor (plethysmography) were measured for comparison with the signal from air mattress. To extract the heart beat information from air pressure sensor, digital signal processing technique was used. The accuracy for breathing interval and heart beat monitoring was acceptable. It shows the potentials of air mattress sensor system to be the unconstrained home sleep monitoring system.

  • Continuous monitoring of heart rates and respiratory rates for newborns or infants is very important since the abnormal breathing and heart problems can threaten the life of newborns or infants. A noncontact baby monitoring system based on a Doppler radar and an air mattress was designed. The Doppler radar was used to acquire respiratory signals and the air mattress was employed to obtain heart rates. The performance of the designed system was evaluated using a commercialized infant simulator ($Simbaby^{TM}$) and a respiration belt transducer was used to measure respiration rates as a reference. Results for respiratory rates revealed that the correlation coefficients between I-and Q-channel and the respiration belt were 0.84 and 0.91 and the mean ${\pm}$ standard deviations of errors between them were $1.66{\pm}1.92$ (bpm) and $0.88{\pm}1.65$ (bpm). Heart rates showed that the correlation coefficient between air mattress and set value of the simulator was 0.73 and the mean ${\pm}$ standard deviation of errors between them was $1.09{\pm}3.45$ (bpm). These results indicate that the designed system holds the potential as an effective monitoring tool for continuous monitoring heart rates and respiratory rates of newborns or infants.
