  • Aluminum alloy matrix composites reinforced by SiC particles were prepared by rheocompocasting, a process which consists of the incoporation and distribution of reinforcement by stirring within a semi-solid alloy. When the volume fraction of SiCp and stirring speed were fixed, the dispersion of SiCp in Al-matrix alloy depended on stirring time and solid volume fraction in slurry. The results were as follows : 1) As a dispersed SiCp during stirring at $647^{\circ}C$ in 6063-Al alloy, SiC was better dispersed than that other temperature, where solid volume fraction was 43% in slurry. 2) When increased solid fraction in slurry, rate of dispersing SiC increased during stirring and porosities decreased in matrix alloy after casting. 3) Inspite of stirring with 800rpm, since solid particles of matrix alloy in slurry joined each other and occured joining growth, so that SiC was not dispersed into solid particle.

  • The concrete stiffness matrices of membrane elements used in the finite element analysis of wall-type structures are reviewed and discussed. The behavior of cracked reinforced concrete membrane elements is first described by summarizing the constitutive laws of concrete and steel established for the two softened truss models (the rotating-angle softened-truss model and the fixed-angle softened-truss model). These constitutive laws are then related to the concrete stiffness matrices of the two existing cracking models (the rotating-crack model and the fixed-crack model). In view of the weakness in the existing models, a general model of the matrix is proposed. This general matrix includes two Poisson ratios which are not clearly understood at present. It is proposed that all five material properties in the general matrix should be established by new biaxial tests of panels using proportional loading and strain-control procedures.

  • The objective of this study is to find the change of signal characteristics of matrix cracks due to the different specimen shapes. As the concept of the smart structure, monitoring of acoustic emission (AE) can be applied to inspect the fracture of the structures in operating condition using built-in sensors. To understand the characteristics of matrix crack signals, we performed tensile tests by changing the thickness and width of the specimens. This paper describes the implementation of time-frequency analysis such as wavelet transform (WT) fur the quantitative evaluation of fracture signals. The experimental result shows the distinctive signal features in frequency domain due to the different specimen shapes.

  • This note proposes a robust LQR method for systems with structured real parameter uncertainty based on Riccati equation approach. Emphasis is on the reduction of design conservatism in the sense of quadratic performance by utilizing the uncertainty structure. The class of uncertainty treated includes all the form of additive real parameter uncertainty, which has the multiple rank structure. To handle the structure of uncertainty, the scaling matrix with block diagonal structure is introduced. By changing the scaling matrix, all the possible set of uncertainty structures can be represented. Modified algebraic Riccati equation (MARE) is newly proposed to obtain a robust feedback control law, which makes the quadratic cost finite for an arbitrary scaling matrix. The remaining design freedom, that is, the scaling matrix is used for minimizing the upper bound of the quadratic cost for all possible set of uncertainties within the given bounds. A design example is shown to demonstrate the simplicity and the effectiveness of proposed method.

  • The following "Periodic Jacobi Procrustes" problem is studied: find the Periodic Jacobi matrix X which minimizes the Frobenius (or Euclidean) norm of AX - B, with A and B as given rectangular matrices. The class of Procrustes problems has many application in the biological, physical and social sciences just as in the investigation of elastic structures. The different problems are obtained varying the structure of the matrices belonging to the feasible set. Higham has solved the orthogonal, the symmetric and the positive definite cases. Andersson and Elfving have studied the symmetric positive semidefinite case and the (symmetric) elementwise nonnegative case. In this contribution, we extend and develop these research, however, in a relatively simple way. Numerical difficulties are discussed and illustrated by examples.

  • It is a great challenge to design and develop biologically inspired hierarchical platforms composed of nano and sub-nanopatterned topography for cell and tissue engineering. In this work, we have developed the novel platforms as a synthetic extracellular matrix using graphene and nanopatterned substrates for promoting functions of cells. Monolayer graphene was coated on the nanopatterned matrix with various nanoscale parallel ridges and grooves as scaffolds with hierarchical structures. Strictly, it was found that graphene-matrix nanotopography platforms could promote the functions of cells including stem cells, osteoblast cells, and endothelial cells through the synergically controlled cell-substrate and cell-cell interactions. Our results proposed that the graphene-based nanopatterned scaffolds would allow us to set up an efficient strategy for designing advanced biomimetic engineering systems toward stem cell-based tissue regeneration.

  • A new vector algorithm is presented for computing the stiffness matrices of layered reinforced concrete shell elements. Each element stiffness matrix is represented in terms of three vector arrays of lengths 78, 96 and 36, respectively. One element stiffness matrix is calculated at a time without interruption in the vector calculations for the uncracked or cracked elements. It is shown that the present algorithm is 1.1 to 7.3 times more efficient then a previous algorithm developed by us on a Cray Y-MP supercomputer.

  • To study the seismic vulnerability of the composite material structure of adobe and timber, we collected and statistically analysed empirical observation samples of 542,214,937 m2 and 467,177 buildings that were significantly impacted during the 179 earthquakes that occurred in mainland China from 1976 to 2010. In multi-intensity regions, combined with numerical analysis and a probability model, a non-linear continuous regression model of the vulnerability, considering the empirical seismic damage area (number of buildings) and the ratio of seismic damage, was established. Moreover, a probability matrix model of the empirical seismic damage mean value was provided. Considering the coupling effect of the annual and seismic fortification factors, an empirical seismic vulnerability curve model was constructed in the multiple-intensity regions. A probability matrix model of the mean vulnerability index (MVI) was proposed, and was validated through the above-mentioned reconnaissance sample data. A matrix model of the MVI of the regions (19 provinces in mainland China) based on the parameter (MVI) was established.

  • In the dynamic analysis of cable structures, geometrical non-linearity due to the flexibility of cables must be considered efficiently. In this paper, formulation of tangent stiffness matrix of elastic catenary cable is derived by using relative nodal displacements, self-weight and unstressed cable length. Free vibration analysis of simply supported cable using elastic catenary cable elements is conducted and compared with that using truss elements. The result shows that elastic catenary cable elements are more compatible than truss elements in the case of analysis of cable structures. Furthermore, the characteristic of dynamic behaviors of cable structures by temporary unstability phenomenon is confirmed.

  • Recently, a new output-only modal identification method based on time-frequency independent component analysis (ICA) has been developed by the authors and shown to be useful for even highly-damped structures. In many cases, it is of interest to identify the complex modes of structures with non-proportional damping. This study extends the time-frequency ICA based method to a complex ICA formulation for output-only modal identification of non-proportionally-damped structures. The connection is established between complex ICA model and the complex-valued modal expansion with sparse time-frequency representation, thereby blindly separating the measured structural responses into the complex mode matrix and complex-valued modal responses. Numerical simulation on a non-proportionally-damped system, laboratory experiment on a highly-damped three-story frame, and a real-world highly-damped base-isolated structure identification example demonstrate the capability of the time-frequency complex ICA method for identification of structures with complex modes in a straightforward and efficient manner.
