  • This paper describes a scaled model development of PMSG wind power system using wind turbine simulator and matrix converter. The wind turbine simulator, which consists of an induction motor with vector drive, calculates the output torque of a specific wind turbine using simulation software and sends the torque signal to the vector drive after scaling down the calculated value. The operational feasibility of interconnected PMSG system with matrix converter was verified by computer simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC software. The feasibility of hardware implementation was conformed by experimental works with a laboratory scaled-model of wind power system. The simulation and experimental results confirm that matrix converter can be effectively applied for the PMSG wind power system.

  • In this paper, an improved direct torque control (DTC) method for sensorless matrix converter drives is proposed which enables to minimize torque ripple, to obtain unity input power factor, and to achieve good sensorless speed-control performance in the low speed operation, while maintaining constant switching frequency and fast torque dynamics. It is possible to combine the advantages of matrix converters with the advantages of the DTC strategy using space vector modulation and a flux deadbeat controller. To overcome the phase current distortion by the non-linearity of a matrix converter drive, the simple non-linearity compensation method using PQR power theory are presented in the proposed scheme. Experimental results are shown to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed strategy.

  • This paper presents supervisor control methods at a matrix converter controlled overhead crane system based on a controller area network (CAN). Four induction motors are used to drive the gantry, trolley, and hoist at he crane and each motor is controlled by the matrix converter with direct torque control (DTC). Both the position control algorithm and the supervisor control system using CAN are introduced. Simulation and experimental results are carried out to verify the performance of position control at the matrix converter controlled crane system.

  • This paper proposes a novel single-phase ac-ac converter topology based on the Z-source concept. The converter provides buck-boost function and plays the role of frequency changer. Compared to the traditional ac-dc-ac converter, it uses fewer devices, realizes direct ac-ac power conversion, and has a simpler circuit structure, so as to have higher efficiency and better circuit characteristics. Compared to the traditional matrix converter, it provides a wider voltage regulation range. The circuit topology, operating principle, control method and simulation results are given in this paper, and the rationality and feasibility is verified.

  • The matrix converter provides sinusoidal input and output wave forms, bidirectional power flow, controllable input power factor and a long life, compared to the VSI(Voltage Source Inverter) with diode rectification stage at the input. However it has tasks, such as complexity of the control method, ride-through problem and low voltage-ratio limitation, to overcome for commercializing, This paper describes the design, construction and implementation of matrix converter based on space vector modulation technique. The implemented prototype of matrix converter is built using the exclusive IGBT module and control circuit constituted with DSP and CPLD and it has an input filter, overvoltage protection circuit and commutation means for overcoming practical issues. The good results tested using an induction motor are also presented.

  • In this paper a decoupled control of a doubly-fed induction machine(DFIM) feed by a matrix converter is presented. It provides a robust regulation of the stator side active and reactive powers by the direct and quadratic components of the stator current vector, presented in a line-voltage-oriented reference frame. In this case, the stator windings are directly connected to the line grid, while the rotor windings are supplied by this later through a matrix converter controlled by a space vector modulation technique. The proposed solution is suitable for both energy generation and electrical drive applications with restricted speed variation range.

  • This paper investigates analytical models of Conduction and Switching Losses (CASLs) of a matrix-Z-source converter (MZC). Two analytical models of the CASLs are obtained through the examination of operating principles for a Z-source inverter and ac-dc matrix converter respectively. Based on the two models, the analytical model of CASLs for a MZC is constructed and visualized over a range of exemplified operating- points, each of which is defined by the combination of power factor (pt) and modulation index (M). The model provides a measurable way to approximate the total losses of the MZC.

  • This paper proposes an open-switch fault tolerant strategy based on the model predictive control for a full bidirectional switches indirect matrix converter (FBS-IMC). Compared to the conventional Indirect Matrix Converter (IMC), the FBS-IMC can provide healthy current path when open-switch fault is occurred. To keep the continuous operation, the fault tolerant strategy is developed by means of reversing the DC-link voltage polarity regardless of the faulty switch location in the rectifier or inverter stage. Therefore, the proposed control strategy can maintain the same input and output performances during the faulty condition as the normal condition. The simulation results are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.
