A two stage ac drive configuration consisting of a single-phase line commutated rectifier and a three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI) is very common in low and medium power applications. The deterministic pulse width modulation (PWM) methods like sinusoidal PWM (SPWM) could not be considered as an ideal choice for modern drives since they result mechanical vibration and acoustic noise, and limit the application scope. This is due to the incapability of the deterministic PWM strategies in sprawling the harmonic power. The random PWM (RPWM) approaches could solve this issue by creating continuous harmonic profile instead of discrete clusters of dominant harmonics. Insufficient filtering at dc link results in the amplitude distortion of the input dc voltage to the VSI and has the most significant impact on the spectral errors (difference between theoretical and practical spectra). It is obvious that the sprawling effect of RPWM undoubtedly influenced by input fluctuation and the discrete harmonic clusters may reappear. The influence of dc link fluctuation on harmonics and their spreading effect in the VSI remains invalidated. A case study is done with four different filter capacitor values in this paper and results are compared with the constant dc input operation. This paper also proposes an ingenious RPWM, a ripple dosed sinusoidal reference-random carrier PWM (RDSRRCPWM), which has the innate capacity of suppressing the effect of input fluctuation in the output than the other modern PWM methods. MATLAB based simulation study reveals the fundamental component, total harmonic distortion (THD) and harmonic spread factor (HSF) for various modulation indices. The non-ideal dc link is managed well with the developed RDSRRCPWM applied to the VSI and tested in a proto type VSI using the field programmable gate array (FPGA).
Multi-pulse topology of converters using elementary six-pulse GTO - VSC (gate turn off based voltage source converter) operated under fundamental frequency switching (FFS) control is widely adopted in high power rating static synchronous compensators (STATCOM). Practically, a 48-pulse ($6{\times}8$ pulse) configuration is used with the phase angle control algorithm employing proportional and integral (PI) control methodology. These kinds of controllers, for example the ${\pm}80MVAR$ compensator at Inuyama switching station, KEPCO, Japan, employs two stages of magnetics viz. intermediate transformers (as many as VSCs) and a main coupling transformer to minimize harmonics distortion in the line and to achieve a desired operational efficiency. The magnetic circuit needs altogether nine transformers of which eight are phase shifting transformers (PST) used in the intermediate stage, each rating equal to or more than one eighth of the compensator rating, and the other one is the main coupling transformer having a power rating equal to that of the compensator. In this paper, a two-level 48-pulse ${\pm}100MVAR$ STATCOM is proposed where eight, six-pulse GTO-VSC are employed and magnetics is simplified to single-stage using four transformers of which three are PSTs and the other is a normal transformer. Thus, it reduces the magnetics to half of the value needed in the commercially available compensator. By adopting the simple PI-controllers, the model is simulated in a MATLAB environment by SimPowerSystems toolbox for voltage regulation in the transmission system. The simulation results show that the THD levels in line voltage and current are well below the limiting values specified in the IEEE Std 519-1992 for harmonic control in electrical power systems. The controller performance is observed reasonably well during capacitive and inductive modes of operation.

Structural damage detection using modal strain energy (MSE) is one of the most efficient and reliable structural health monitoring techniques. However, some of the existing MSE methods have been validated for special types of structures such as beams or steel truss bridges which demands improving the available methods. The purpose of this study is to improve an efficient modal strain energy method to detect and quantify the damage in complex structures at early stage of formation. In this paper, a modal strain energy method was mathematically developed and then numerically applied to a fixed-end beam and a three-story frame including single and multiple damage scenarios in absence and presence of up to five per cent noise. For each damage scenario, all mode shapes and natural frequencies of intact structures and the first five mode shapes of assumed damaged structures were obtained using STRAND7. The derived mode shapes of each intact and damaged structure at any damage scenario were then separately used in the improved formulation using MATLAB to detect the location and quantify the severity of damage as compared to those obtained from previous method. It was found that the improved method is more accurate, efficient and convergent than its predecessors. The outcomes of this study can be safely and inexpensively used for structural health monitoring to minimize the loss of lives and property by identifying the unforeseen structural damages.

The full nonlinear equations of an unmanned aerial vehicle ground taxiing mathematical dynamic model are built based on a type of unmanned aerial vehicle data in LMS Virtual.Lab Motion. The flexible landing gear model is considered to make the aircraft ground motion more accurate. The electric braking control system is established in MATLAB/Simulink and the experiment of it verifies that the electric braking model with the pressure sensor is fitted well with the actual braking mechanism and it ensures the braking response speediness. The direction rectification control law combining the differential brake and the rudder with 30% anti-skid brake is built to improve the directional stability. Two other rectifying control laws are demonstrated to compare with the designed control law to verify that the designed control is of high directional stability and high braking efficiency. The lateral displacement increases by 445.45% with poor rectification performance under the only rudder rectifying control relative to the designed control law. The braking distance rises by 36m and the braking frequency increases by 85.71% under the control law without anti-skid brake. Different landing conditions are simulated to verify the good robustness of the designed rectifying control.

In this paper we proposed a Weight-Update-Control Adaptive Noise Canceller which improves speech when environmental noise is stationary and it is hard to acquire a reference signal. Adaptive Noise Canceller(ANC) needs a reference signal, but it is not easy to measure pure noise without voice for reference in factory. Because there are mixed various mechanical noise and workers' voice. Therefore ANC is not suitable to reduce background noise. So we proposed the method that uses an arbitrary constant as an input signal and inputs microphone signal to the reference signal. The noise is eliminated using updated weights in non-speech range. In speech range the weight is fixed and the modified voice is acquired then voice is restored through transversal filter. The proposed method is based on facts that the factory noise is stationary and the noise is not changed in short conversation range. As a result of simulation using MATLAB, we confirmed that the proposed method is effective for reducing factory noise and has high signal to noise ratio(SNR).
Dynamic behavior of the harmonic detection part of an active power filter (APF) has an essential role in filter compensation performances during transient conditions. Instantaneous power (p-q) theory is extensively used to design harmonic detectors for active filters. Large overshoot of p-q theory method deteriorates filter response at a large and rapid load change. In this study the harmonic estimation of an APF during transient conditions for balanced three-phase nonlinear loads is conducted. A novel fuzzy instantaneous power (FIP) theory is proposed to improve conventional p-q theory dynamic performances during transient conditions to adapt automatically to any random and rapid nonlinear load change. Adding fuzzy rules in p-q theory improves the decomposition of the alternating current components of active and reactive power signals and develops correct reference during rapid and random current variation. Modifying p-q theory internal high-pass filter performance using fuzzy rules without any drawback is a prospect. In the simulated system using MATLAB/SIMULINK, the shunt active filter is connected to a rapidly time-varying nonlinear load. The harmonic detection parts of the shunt active filter are developed for FIP theory-based and p-q theory-based algorithms. The harmonic detector hardware is also developed using the TMS320F28335 digital signal processor and connected to a laboratory nonlinear load. The software is developed for FIP theory-based and p-q theory-based algorithms. The simulation and experimental tests results verify the ability of the new technique in harmonic detection of rapid changing nonlinear loads.

The positioning technology for a moving object is an important and essential component of ubiquitous computing environment and applications, for which Radio Frequency Identification(RFID) has been considered as a core technology. RFID-based positioning system calculates the position of moving object based on k-nearest neighbor(k-nn) algorithm using detected k-tags which have known coordinates and kcan be determined according to the detection range of RFID system. In this paper, RFID-based positioning system determines the position of moving object not using weight factor which depends on received signal strength but assuming that tags within the detection range always operate and have same weight value. Because the latter system is much more economical than the former one. The geometries of tags were determined with considerations in huge buildings like office buildings, shopping malls and warehouses, so they were determined as the line in I-Dimensional space, the square in 2-Dimensional space. In 1-Dimensional space, the optimal detection range is determined as 125% of the tag spacing distance through the analytical and numerical approach. Here, the analytical approach means a mathematical proof and the numerical approach means a simulation using matlab. But the analytical approach is very difficult in 2-Dimensional space, so through the numerical approach, the optimal detection range is determined as 134% of the tag spacing distance in 2-Dimensional space. This result can be used as a fundamental study for designing RFID-based positioning system.

This paper presents a constrained-based routing (CBR) algorithm called, Dynamic Possible Path per Link (D-PPL) routing algorithm, for MultiProtocol Label Switching (MPLS) networks. In MPLS on-line routing, future traffics are unknown and network resource is limited. Therefore many routing algorithms such as Minimum Hop Algorithm (MHA), Widest Shortest Path (WSP), Dynamic Link Weight (DLW), Minimum Interference Routing Algorithm (MIRA), Profiled-Based Routing (PBR), Possible Path per Link (PPL) and Residual bandwidth integrated - Possible Path per Link (R-PPL) are proposed in order to improve network throughput and reduce rejection probability. MIRA is the first algorithm that introduces interference level avoidance between source-destination node pairs by integrating topology information or address of source-destination node pairs into the routing calculation. From its results, MIRA improves lower rejection probability performance. Nevertheless, MIRA suffer from its high routing complexity which could be considered as NP-Complete problem. In PBR, complexity of on-line routing is reduced comparing to those of MIRA, because link weights are off-line calculated by statistical profile of history traffics. However, because of dynamic of traffic nature, PBR maybe unsuitable for MPLS on-line routing. Also, both PPL and R-PPL routing algorithm we formerly proposed, are algorithms that achieve reduction of interference level among source-destination node pairs, rejection probability and routing complexity. Again, those previously proposed algorithms do not take into account the dynamic nature of traffic load. In fact, future traffics are unknown, but, amount of previous traffic over link can be measured. Therefore, this is the motivation of our proposed algorithm, the D-PPL. The D-PPL algorithm is improved based on the R-PPL routing algorithm by integrating traffic-per-link parameters. The parameters are periodically updated and are dynamically changed depended on current incoming traffic. The D-PPL tries to reserve residual bandwidth to service future request by avoid routing through those high traffic-per-link parameters. We have developed extensive MATLAB simulator to evaluate performance of the D-PPL. From simulation results, the D-PPL improves performance of MPLS on-line routing in terms of rejection probability and total throughput.
Since composite structures are widely used in structural engineering, delamination in such structures is an important issue of research. Delamination is one of a principal cause of failure in composites. In This study the electrical potential (EP) technique is applied to detect and locate delamination in basalt fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) laminate composite pipe by using electrical capacitance sensor (ECS). The proposed EP method is able to identify and localize hidden delamination inside composite layers without overlapping with other method data accumulated to achieve an overall identification of the delamination location/size in a composite, with high accuracy, easy and low-cost. Twelve electrodes are mounted on the outer surface of the pipe. Afterwards, the delamination is introduced into between the three layers (0º/90º/0º)s laminates pipe, split into twelve scenarios. The dielectric properties change in basalt FRP pipe is measured before and after delamination occurred using arrays of electrical contacts and the variation in capacitance values, capacitance change and node potential distribution are analyzed. Using these changes in electrical potential due to delamination, a finite element simulation model for delamination location/size detection is generated by ANSYS and MATLAB, which are combined to simulate sensor characteristic. Response surfaces method (RSM) are adopted as a tool for solving inverse problems to estimate delamination location/size from the measured electrical potential changes of all segments between electrodes. The results show good convergence between the finite element model (FEM) and estimated results. Also the results indicate that the proposed method successfully assesses the delamination location/size for basalt FRP laminate composite pipes. The illustrated results are in excellent agreement with the experimental results available in the literature, thus validating the accuracy and reliability of the proposed technique.
