  • This study explores the relations between mathematics and the natural human language. At the very outset, a general definition of language was, given while it was attempted to make some comparisons between the words of natural language and mathematical symbols at that. Besides, the occupation of natural language functions within mathematics was handled. Consequently, it was tried to manifest that the language of mathematics enjoys the features of natural language as well. Mathematics makes use of many functional and structural features. The fact that fundamental ingredient of mathematics is symbols does not change this reality.

  • The aim of this study was to explore the grade 1-3 students' geometrical thinking level descriptors based on van Hiele level descriptors. The data were collected through collection of geometric curriculum materials such as indicators and learning standards in Basic Education Core Curriculum and mathematics textbook for grades 1-3. The findings were found that 1) Inconsistency between descriptors appeared on mathematics curriculum and Thai mathematics textbooks. 2) Using topics on textbooks as criterion for exploring 5 of 7 descriptors appeared on Thai mathematics textbook indicated geometrical thinking levels based on van Hiele's model merely level 0 (Visualization) across textbooks for grades 1-3.

  • Russia is a country which is interested in mathematics education for the gifted students for a long time. Some aspect of education for the gifted students in Russia (for example, mathematics curriculum of the Russian physio-mathematics school, mathematics education by correspondence for sifted students etc.) has been partially studied. The purpose of this work is to introduce various systems of the mathematics education for the gifted students in Russia, and to draw significant conclusion for systematizing gifted education in Korea. In order to achieve this goal, we analyzed Russian literatures and articles published in Russia by the physio-mathematics school, ministry of education, and etc. In this article, we gave some characteristics of the various types of gifted education in Russia, and the practical curriculum for the gifted education.

  • Spatial ability has been valued as a talent domain and important skill in mathematics education because it enhanced an intuitive view and an understanding in many areas of mathematic. In addition, spatial ability highly correlates with mathematics achievement, indicating its crucial role in success in mathematics education. Some researchers founded gender differences in mathematics and spatial ability, and indicated that spatial ability served as a mediator of gender difference in mathematics. This study explored the spatial ability of 349 Korean middle school students (Grade 7-9), and investigated the association among students' spatial ability and their mathematics achievement, gender, and grade. The result of this study shows that spatial ability correlates positively with mathematics achievement. While gender difference did not exist in mathematics, significant gender difference existed in spatial ability favoring male students.

  • In this paper, in order to explicate how mathematics education can contribute to humanity education, I enquired in which position mathematics occupy in Froebel's For this, I examined Froebel's theory of humanity education, his theory of mathematics education, and the applicational problem of his thoughts to nowaday education. Froebel's educational theory is based on the concept of the Divine Unity which is relevant to the notion of 'The Absolute' of Fichte, Schelling, Hegel. He claims that from inanimate objects to human being, all is subject to the eternal law, which is presided by God. So the world itself is the representation of this law of the Divine Unity and education consists in leading man to conscious and free representation of it. The revealing process of the inner law of the Divine Unity can be attained through the awareness of the divinity which resides in the self. And this process of self-consciousness is dialectical movement of the two opposites, i.e. 'inner' and 'outer' Froebel suggests that mathematics is the mediator between the inner and outer world, i.e. he suggests that since both human being and nature are the representations of the Divine Unity, mathematics is both the pure human spirits and the law of nature. Having such a role, mathematics becomes the main discipline in education. Though there are some criticism on Froebel's educational thoughts on mathematics discussed in this paper, it can provide a typical answer to the question about how mathematics education contributes to humanity education.

  • Social awareness of mathematics and academic attitudes toward the value of mathematics education has kept changing according to the intellectual, political and religious contexts. In this article, we examine how mathematics was defined and recognized in liberal arts education of the Roman Empire and early medieval Western Europe. This study analyzes how mathematics was described in encyclopedic works written in the Roman era after the mid-second century BC and in the Western European monasteries and cathedral schools after the fifth century. Ancient Greek mathematics took a clear place in liberal arts education through encyclopedia writings and prepared a mathematics curriculum for medieval universities. I hope this study will contribute to understanding the origin and context of the mathematics curriculum of medieval universities.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine mathematics teachers' perceptions of multicultural education. To achieve this goal, the study explored how 10 elementary mathematics teachers noticed multicultural content in a mathematics textbook. Building upon noticing framework (Jacobs, Lamb, & Philipp, 2010), we first examined teachers' attention toward multicultural content in a mathematics textbook. Then, we examined teachers' interpretation of the content. We employed a content analysis approach to examine the collected data. The results indicated that most mathematics teachers held a content integration perspective. Their view was that "multicultural education" referred to learning about the diverse cultures of different countries. Moreover, although they noticed some multicultural content in the textbook, they wanted to discuss them in superficially descriptive ways and avoid talking about social justice issues. Additionally, some teachers believed that mathematics is a culture-free subject. They argued that multicultural content should not be presented in mathematics textbooks. We also discussed uncommon themes, which were reported by only a few mathematics teachers.
