Using machine learning for anomaly detection on a system-on-chip under gamma radiation

  • The emergence of new nanoscale technologies has imposed significant challenges to designing reliable electronic systems in radiation environments. A few types of radiation like Total Ionizing Dose (TID) can cause permanent damages on such nanoscale electronic devices, and current state-of-the-art technologies to tackle TID make use of expensive radiation-hardened devices. This paper focuses on a novel and different approach: using machine learning algorithms on consumer electronic level Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) to tackle TID effects and monitor them to replace before they stop working. This condition has a research challenge to anticipate when the board results in a total failure due to TID effects. We observed internal measurements of FPGA boards under gamma radiation and used three different anomaly detection machine learning (ML) algorithms to detect anomalies in the sensor measurements in a gamma-radiated environment. The statistical results show a highly significant relationship between the gamma radiation exposure levels and the board measurements. Moreover, our anomaly detection results have shown that a One-Class SVM with Radial Basis Function Kernel has an average recall score of 0.95. Also, all anomalies can be detected before the boards are entirely inoperative, i.e. voltages drop to zero and confirmed with a sanity check.

Cascade Network Based Bolt Inspection In High-Speed Train

  • The detection of bolts is an important task in high-speed train inspection systems, and it is frequently performed to ensure the safety of trains. The difficulty of the vision-based bolt inspection system lies in small sample defect detection, which makes the end-to-end network ineffective. In this paper, the problem is resolved in two stages, which includes the detection network and cascaded classification networks. For small bolt detection, all bolts including defective bolts and normal bolts are put together for conducting annotation training, a new loss function and a new boundingbox selection based on the smallest axis-aligned convex set are proposed. These allow YOLOv3 network to obtain the accurate position and bounding box of the various bolts. The average precision has been greatly improved on PASCAL VOC, MS COCO and actual data set. After that, the Siamese network is employed for estimating the status of the bolts. Using the convolutional Siamese network, we are able to get strong results on few-shot classification. Extensive experiments and comparisons on actual data set show that the system outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms in bolt inspection.

Image Captioning with Synergy-Gated Attention and Recurrent Fusion LSTM

  • Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) combined with attention mechanism is extensively used to generate semantic sentences of images in image captioning models. However, features of salient regions and spatial information are not utilized sufficiently in most related works. Meanwhile, the LSTM also suffers from the problem of underutilized information in a single time step. In the paper, two innovative approaches are proposed to solve these problems. First, the Synergy-Gated Attention (SGA) method is proposed, which can process the spatial features and the salient region features of given images simultaneously. SGA establishes a gated mechanism through the global features to guide the interaction of information between these two features. Then, the Recurrent Fusion LSTM (RF-LSTM) mechanism is proposed, which can predict the next hidden vectors in one time step and improve linguistic coherence by fusing future information. Experimental results on the benchmark dataset of MSCOCO show that compared with the state-of-the-art methods, the proposed method can improve the performance of image captioning model, and achieve competitive performance on multiple evaluation indicators.

Optimization of the Travelling Salesman Problem Using a New Hybrid Genetic Algorithm

  • The travelling salesman problem is very famous and very difficult combinatorial optimization problem that has several applications in operations research, computer science and industrial engineering. As the problem is difficult, finding its optimal solution is computationally very difficult. Thus, several researchers have developed heuristic/metaheuristic algorithms for finding heuristic solutions to the problem instances. In this present study, a new hybrid genetic algorithm (HGA) is suggested to find heuristic solution to the problem. In our HGA we used comprehensive sequential constructive crossover, adaptive mutation, 2-opt search and a new local search algorithm along with a replacement method, then executed our HGA on some standard TSPLIB problem instances, and finally, we compared our HGA with simple genetic algorithm and an existing state-of-the-art method. The experimental studies show the effectiveness of our proposed HGA for the problem.

  • Fractal which was named by Mandelbrot in 1975 and its theory have been taken notice of many fields of scholarship, namely mathematics, physics, geography, architecture, art, philosophy and so on. If we approach Fractal on the basis of the designing cogitation, it can be used not only as one of materials to take a crease thinking in design, also as a due of the methods to assess the design problem with a new point of view. Based on above background, in this study, it was studied on the graphic artist, Morits Collelius Escher who has been well known as the great artist of illusion," and on the attributes of Fractal which were contained in his various work\ulcorner As a reset, the four attributes, namey ′fractal dimension′, ′self-similarity, ′recursiveness′and ′infinity were founded in his works. Also, it was founded that Escher had employed the attributes of Fractal in his almost works for "the representation of the condition of unified-duality," that is to say, for the union of two different dimensions. After this, it is expected that this study shoed be extended to the development of the principle of Fractal-Design on the basis of ′Fractal which can be defined as the phenomenon of repetitious pattern between chaos and order and′the formative beauty of Fractal′.

학사과정 공학프로그램의 설계교육모델 (A Design Education Model in Undergraduate Engineering Program)

  • 학사과정 공학프로그램에서는 기초과학, 공학이론(engineering science), 공학설계(engineering design), 공학관련 인문학 및 사회과학 등 4개 분야를 다루어야 하는데 우리나라의 경우는 후자의 2개 분야를 제대로 교육하지 못하고 있다. 그 큰 이유는 이 분야 교과목 개발이 어렵고 그 교과목을 교육하기도 힘들기 때문이다. 그러나 우리의 교육여건이 점차 개선되고 있고 산업체에서도 강도높게 요구하고 있기 때문에 이들 2개 분야의 교육을 시급히 강화할 필요가 있다. 이 연구에서는 이들 2개 분야를 종합적으로 교육시킬 수 있는 하나의 설계교육 모델을 제안하였다. 설계교육을 세단계로 구성하였는데 제1단계는 공학의 본질 및 설계과정을 이해시키고, 창의력향상에 주안점을 둔 설계, 제2단계는 전공이론을 이용한 정밀하고 경제적인 해를 찾는 설계방법, 제3단계는 실사회 문제를 해결할 수 있는 설계능력을 배양하는 것으로 구성하였다. 그리고 각 전공교과목에서도 여러 지식을 종합하는 설계과제를 다루도록 하였다.

  • STEAM 교육은 과학 기술 공학 예술 수학 교과의 연계 지도를 통해 학습자의 과학기술에 대한 흥미와 이해를 높이고 융합적 사고와 문제해결능력을 배양할 수 있도록 주제 중심의 학습 내용으로 교육과정을 재구성하여 가르치는 것이다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 초등학교에서 운영할 수 있는 STEAM 교육과정을 프로젝트 기반 학습 형태로 설계하고 운영에 필요한 교수 학습 자료를 제작하였다. 또한 STEAM 교육에서 IT 기술이 모의실험 도구로 활용될 수 있는 방안을 모색하여 프로젝트 기반 학습의 교육 효과를 높이고자 안드로이드 기반에서 애플리케이션을 개발하였다.

우리나라의 초록시스템 - 현황, 문제 및 개선방안 (The Abstracting Services in Korea: The Present State, Problems and Some Suggestions for Action in the Future)

  • The main purpose of the present study is to survey the major abstracting bulletins of national nature in Korea, to define such problem areas as lacunae, duplicates and limitation in coverage in the abstracting services currently available in Korea, and to make some suggestions for action for improving the abstracting services in the light of general principles and the tradition and situations unique to Korea. The major conclusions reached at this study are summarised as follows: (A) A new abstracting bulletin of general nature covering the whole field needs to be created in each of the following fields where no established abstracting service is available for the outcome of research and development activities in Korea. (1) Language (2) Religion (3) Art (4) Language (5) Literature (6) History (B) A new specialised abstracting bulletin needs to be created in each of the following fields of science where abstracting services limited in coverage are partially available. (a) Statistics (b) Sociology (c) political science (d) Public administration (e) Law (f) Folk lore (g) Military science (2) Pure sciences (a) Mathematics (b) Chemistry (c) Astronomy (d) Geology (e) Mineralogy (f) Life sciences (g) Botany (h) Zoology (3) Applied sciences (a) Agriculture (b) Architectural engineering (c) Mechanical engineering (d) Electrical engineering (e) Chemical engineering (f) Manufacturing industry (g) Domestic science (C) Publication of the abstracting bulletins suggested in (A) and (B) above may be ideally carried on by a qualified learned society established in the respective field. and should be financially supported by the public fund under the provisions of Art. 27 of the Research Promotion Act of 1979. (D) The current practice of adding the author's abstract and keywords to each of the records of the "Doctoral Theses in Humanities and Social Sciences" part of the" Catalogue of Doctoral and Master's Theses Submitted to the Universities in Korea" published by the National Assembly Library should be applied to all the other parts, i. e. to the parts of the "Master's Theses in Humanities and Social Sciences" and of the "Doctoral and Master's Theses in Natural Sciences': which will not only increase the Catalogue's use value but also discourage appearance of various theses abstracts of individual academic institutions such as the" Abstracts of the Doctoral and Master's Theses Submitted to Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology" which will in turn reduce inefficiency involved in the abstracting services at national level. (E) A general abstracting bulletin covering most part of the outcome of research and development activities in Korea other than that covered by the existing abstracts needs to be created to be temporarily. used till the abstracting journals suggested in this study will be fully available. A realistic way of having such a bulletin may be to expand the present coverage of "The Abstracts of the Reports of the Government-sponsored Projects" currently published by Korean Research Foundation.

초등학교 과학과 검정 교과용 도서에 제시된 창의·융합 활동의 STEAM 요소 분석(II): 5~6학년군을 중심으로 (Analysis of STEAM Elements of Creative and Convergent Activities Presented in Elementary School Science Authorized Textbooks(II) : Focusing on the 5th and 6th Grade Group)

  • 이 연구에서는 초등학교 과학과 5~6학년 검정 교과용 도서의 창의·융합 활동에 나타난 STEAM 요소와 융합유형을 분석하였다. 이 연구를 위해 5~6학년 과학 교과서 9종에 제시된 창의·융합 활동을 선정하여 출판사별, 학년-학기별, 과학 영역별로 STEAM 요소와 융합유형을 분석하였다. 이 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 출판사별 창의·융합 활동에 나타난 STEAM 요소의 전체 빈도와 각 요소별 빈도의 편차가 크게 나타났다. 둘째, 전체적으로 2개 요소로 구성된 융합유형의 비율이 매우 높게 나타났고, 융합된 요소의 수가 많은 유형일수록 나타나는 비율이 점차 낮아졌다. 또한 출판사별 융합유형은 교과서마다 매우 다르게 나타났다. 셋째, 모든 학년-학기에서 예술(A) 요소의 빈도가 가장 높게 나타났고, 기술(T), 공학(E), 수학(M) 요소는 학년-학기별로 빈도의 분포에 차이가 있었다. 넷째, '통합' 영역에서는 공학(E) 요소가, '운동과 에너지', '물질', '지구와 우주', 그리고 '생명' 영역에서는 에술(A) 요소의 빈도가 가장 높게 나타났다.

MCU '페이즈3'영화에 나타난 기하학적 상상력 (The Geometrical Imagination of the MCU 'Phase 3' Movie)

  • 이 연구는 MCU의 보편적 세계관을 기하학의 관점으로 해석하고 서사적 요소를 수학적 상상력으로 스토리텔링 하는 데 목적이 있다. 스토리텔링을 위해 2016년부터 2019년까지 방영된 페이즈3 시리즈 자료를 활용하였다. 페이즈3 시리즈는 기하학 이론과 미래기술에 대한 다양한 예측을 바탕으로 서사와 이미지에 나타난 실재감이 대중의 상상력을 자극한다. 상상력은 경험하지 않은 것에 대해 다양하고 독창적인 사고를 이루는 원동력이며 혼란 속에서 질서를 찾고 물질에 대해 새로운 인식을 창조하는 능력이다. 예술 활동뿐만 아니라 논리와 합리성이 중시되는 과학 분야에도 상상하는 힘이 매우 필요하다. 바슐라르 상상력은 인간의 원초적 영역인 예술을 지향하고 자연과 만물의 경이로움을 향한 진정함과 열정을 담고 있다. 기하학적 논리와 상상력에 의한 이미지적 몽상으로 MCU의 세계관과 슈퍼히어로 서사를 탐구하면 영화에 나타난 우주적 메시지와 법칙을 이해할 수 있다. 예술과 학문의 융합적 관점에서 MCU 영상 제작에 활용된 수학과 과학적 상상력을 바탕으로 한 다양하고 독창적인 기법은 영상분석의 질을 높이는 데 도움이 될 것이다.
