Impoved Performance of Sensorless Induction Motor Drive in Low Speed Range Using Variable Link Voltage (가변 링크전압에 의한 센서리스 유도전동기의 저속운전 성능개선)

  • Variable-speed drives are being continually innovated. Recently, sensorless induction motor drives have been much studied due to several advantages. Most sensorless algorithms are based on the mathematical modeling of motors, and all the information is obtained from the monitored voltages and currents. Therefore, the accuracy of such variables largely affects the performance of a sensorless induction motor drive. However, the output voltage of the SVPWM-VSI which is widely used in a sensorless induction motor drive has a considerable error, especially in a low speed range. This paper proposes a variation of the dc link voltage as a high-performance strategy for overcoming the above problem. The proposed strategy leads to an improved resolution of the output voltage of the SVPWM-VSI in a sensorless induction motor drive. Simulation and experiment have been performed for the verification of the proposed strategy.

An On-line Rotor Resistance Estimator for Induction Machine Drives

  • Rotor resistance variation due to changing rotor temperature is a significant issue in the design of induction motor controls. In this work, a new on-line rotor resistance estimator is proposed based on an alternate qd induction machine model which provides better mathematical representation of an induction machine than the classical qd model (which uses constant parameters). This is because the former simultaneously includes leakage saturation, magnetizing path saturation, and distributed circuit effects in the rotor conductors. The comparisons via computer simulation studies show the ability of the proposed estimator to accurately track rotor resistance variation. For the experimental studies, due to the difficulty in measuring the actual rotor resistance, comparison of the controller performance using the proposed estimator, the classical qd model based estimator, and no estimator is made.

  • Recently, not only in the Middle East and Southeast Asia but in African area, too, industrial plant construction is being actually done. But unlike in Korea, a lot of them are small-scale isolated industrial plants. And because of the characteristics of industrial plants, induction motors' load forms a large part. The influence of stability resulted from the maneuver and operation of induction motors' load may lead to serious result in the isolated system. This study analyzed it through mathematical modeling on induction motors' maneuver phenomena in the isolated system, realized a case system with the E-TAP program, and simulated load follow performances according to the control variables of a generator inside the isolated system.

  • An induction motor is one of the most popular electrical apparatuses owing to its simple structure and robust construction. Parameter identification of the induction motor has long been researched either for a vector control technique or fault detection. Since vector control is a well-established technique for induction motor control, this paper concentrates on successive identification of physical parameters with on-load data for the purpose of condition monitoring and/or fault detection. For extracting six physical parameters from the on-load data in the framework of the induction motor state equation, unmeasured initial state values and profiles of load torque have to be estimated as well. However, the analytic optimization methods in general fail to estimate these auxiliary but significant parameters owing to the difficulty of obtaining their gradient information. In this paper, the univariate dynamic encoding algorithm for searches (uDEAS) newly developed is applied to the identification of whole unknown parameters in the mathematical equations of an induction motor with normal operating data. Profiles of identified parameters appear to be reasonable and therefore the proposed approach is available for fault diagnosis of induction motors by monitoring physical parameters.

Students' Mathematical Reasoning Emerging through Dragging Activities in Open-Ended Geometry Problems (개방형 기하 문제에서 학생의 드래깅 활동을 통해 나타난 수학적 추론 분석)

  • In the present study, we analyze the four participating 9th grade students' mathematical reasoning processes in their dragging activities while solving open-ended geometry problems in terms of abduction, induction and deduction. The results of the analysis are as follows. First, the students utilized 'abduction' to adopt their hypotheses, 'induction' to generalize them by examining various cases and 'deduction' to provide warrants for the hypotheses. Secondly, in the abduction process, 'wandering dragging' and 'guided dragging' seemed to help the students formulate their hypotheses, and in the induction process, 'dragging test' was mainly used to confirm the hypotheses. Despite of the emerging mathematical reasoning via their dragging activities, several difficulties were identified in their solving processes such as misunderstanding shapes as fixed figures, not easily recognizing the concept of dependency or path, not smoothly proceeding from probabilistic reasoning to deduction, and trapping into circular logic.

  • The purpose of this paper is to propose a teaching method which is focused on the mathematical thinking skills such as the use of induction, counter example, analogy, and so on mathematicians use when they explore their research fields. Many have indicated that students have learned mathematics exploring to use very different methods mathematicians have done and suggested students explore as they do. In the first part of the paper, the plausible whole processes from the beginning time they get a rough idea to a refined mathematical truth. In the second part, an example with Euler characteristic of 1. In the third, explaining the same processes with ${\pi}$, a model modified from the processes is designed. It is hoped that the suggested model, focused on a variety of mathematical thinking, helps students learn mathematics with understanding and with the association of exploring entertainment.

Analysis of the Bearing Fault Effect on the Stator Current of an AC Induction Motor (유도전동기의 고정자 전류에 미치는 베어링 고장 영향 분석)

  • Detection and diagnosis of incipient bearing fault in an induction motor is important for the prevention of serious motor failure. This paper presents an analysis of the effect of a faulty bearing on the stator current of an induction motor. A bearing fault leads to torque oscillations which result in phase modulation of the stator current. Since the torque oscillations cause specific frequency components at the stator current spectrum to rise sharply, the bearing fault can be detected by checking out the faultrelated frequency. In this paper, a mathematical model of the load torque oscillation caused by a bearing fault is presented. The proposed model can be used to analyze the physical phenomenon of a bearing fault in an induction motor. In order to represent the bearing fault effect, the proposed model is combined with an existing model of vector-controlled induction motors. A set of simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model and represent that bearing fault detection using a stator current is useful for vector-controlled induction motors.

  • This paper deals with the dynamic analysis of variable speed wind power systems with doubly-fed induction generators (DFIG). First, the mathematical modeling of wind farm which consists of turbine rotor, DFIG, rotor side and grid side converter and control systems is presented. In particular, the equation for dynamic modeling of the DFIG and the AC/DC/AC converter is expressed as dq reference frame. And then, on the basis of mathematical modeling for each component of wind farm, dynamic simulation algorithms for speed and pitch angle control of wind turbine and generated active and reactive power control of the DFIG and the AC/DC/AC converter are established. Finally, Using the MATLAB/SIMULINK, this paper presents dynamic simulation model for 6MW wind power generation systems with the DFIG considering distribution systems and performs the dynamic analysis of wind power systems in steady state. Moreover, this paper also presents the dynamic performance for the case when the voltage sag in grid source and phase fault in bus are occurred.

A Fuzzy Predictive Sliding Mode Control for High Performance Induction Motor Position Drives

  • This paper presents a fuzzy predictive sliding mode control for high performance induction motor position drives. A new simplified inner-loop sliding-mode current control scheme based on a nonlinear mathematical model of an induction motor is introduced. Novel predictive fuzzy logic PI and PID controllers are used in speed and position loops, respectively. Sliding-mode current controllers and fuzzy predictive logic controllers are designed based on indirect vector control. The overall system performance is examined under different dynamic operating conditions. The performance of the drive system is robust and stable, and insensitive to parameters and operating condition variations even though non-exact system parameters are used in the implementation of the proposed controllers.

  • Sensorless induction motor drive is much studied due to the cost and reliability of speed and position sensors. Most sensorless algorithms are based on the mathematical modeling of induction motor including electrical variables such as phase current and voltage. Therefore, the accuracy of such variables largely affects the performance of sensorless induction motor drive. However, the phase voltage does not have to be directly monitored because of switching noise, and they may be reconstructed by using the command voltage. The output voltage of SVPWM-VSI supplying the motor has a considerable error, especially in a low speed range because SVPWM-VSI has a poor resolution in a low command voltage. Such a voltage information effect in speed sensorless control of induction motor has been investigated in this paper.
