This literature review focuses on the history of research on elementary students' mathematics anxiety. The results of analysis shows the characteristics, measurement tools, causes and the treatments of mathematics anxiety. The purpose of this study is to provide analytical views of elementary students' mathematics anxiety to teachers, researchers and policymakers. I categorize the results of analysis according to the key words of literatures: (1) the relationship between mathematics anxiety and students' behavior (2) measurements of mathematics anxiety (3) the causes of mathematics anxiety and (4) the treatment of mathematics anxiety.
This study investigated highschool students' brain waves on functional tasks such as a transition(F task) from equation to graph and the other transition(G task) vice versa. A total of 39 students participated in the study who attended a high school located in Gyunggi province. These students were divided into two groups, HMA and LMA by MASS test revised by Ko, & Yi (2012). The functional tasks for the stroop task to measure EEG were provided from a previous study, Seok(2015). The results indicated two groups on G tasks showed deeper and wider brain waves which demonstrated G tasks were more difficult than F tasks. However, HMA group had an effect of the non-psychological program which had given more chances on G tasks rather than F tasks within Students' Zone of Proximal Development. Also, HMA group's brain waves had more ranges in amplitude and width of waves. These results imply that the characteristics of students' brain waves with math anxiety are consistent to the previous studies.
In this study, I used McAnallen Anxiety in Mathematics Teaching Survey Tool to analyze 214 South Korean elementary teachers' anxiety for teaching mathematics. From the analysis of ANOVA and Regression Model, I found that there are statistically significant differences among teachers regarding anxiety for teaching mathematics according to their academic backgrounds, certification levels and teaching experiences. On the other hand, there is no statistically significant difference according to their gender. From the findings of this study, I found that there is a possibility of reducing teachers' anxiety for teaching mathematics with teacher education programs.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of using graphing calculators on students' understanding of the linear and quadratic function concepts. The populators of this study are tenth graders at high school in Seoul, one class for the treatment group and another class for the comparison group, and experiment period is 14 weeks including two weeks for school regular exams.Function tests used in the study was proposed which described a conceptual knowledge of functions in terms of the following components: a) Conceptual understanding, b) Interpreting a function in terms of a verbal experission, c) Translating between different representations of functions, and d) Mathematical modeling a real-world situation using functions. Even though the group test means of the individual components of conceptual understanding, interpreting, translating, mathematical modeling did not differ significantly, there is evidence that the two groups differed in their performance on conceptual understanding. It was shown that students learned algebra using graphing calculators view graphs more globally. The attitude survey assessed students' attitudes and perceptions about the value of mathematics, the usefulness of graphs in mathematics, mathematical confidence, mathematics anxiety, and their feelings about calculators. The overall t-test was not statistically significant, but the students in the treatment group showed significantly different levels of anxiety toward mathematics.

The purposes of this study are to find out differences of the causes of mathematics anxiety in elementary school students according to the Grades and sex, and to find out which causes have more influence on achievement of mathematics and how much it is. For this purposes, the problems of this study are defined as follows: First, are there any differences in the influences of each super-causes and sub-causes of mathematics anxiety according to the Grades? Second, are there any differences in the influences of each super-causes and sub-causes of mathematics anxiety according to the sex? Third, what relation do the super-causes of mathematics anxiety have to the achievement of mathematics? The conclusions of this study are as follows: First, mathematics anxiety is much more affected by the internal cause like the cause of student attitude than the external cause like the causes of circumstance and the cause of teacher. Second. mathematics anxiety is much more affected by a direct experience like the causes of a shortage of time and the causes of student interest than indirect experience like the causes of teacher's authority and the causes of the application of daily life. Third, the causes of circumstance and parent's attitude. its sub-cause, have greater influence on the female group than on the male group. Fourth, in the middle Gradess, the female group is more affected by the cause of student attitude and the cause of circumstance than the male group, but in the higher Grades. the differences disappear and those two become common causes of anxiety. Fifth, As the students go up to the next Grades in school, the cause of teacher, the characteristic of the curriculum and the cause of prejudice have more influence on the mathematics anxiety. Sixth, the causes of teacher, the causes of mathematical curriculum and the causes of student attitude among super-causes of mathematics anxiety have a negative effect on the achievement of mathematics. But the causes of circumstance have a positive effect on it. And also, the causes of mathematical curriculum among super-causes is much related to the causes of teacher and the causes of circumstance.
This case study examined mathematics anxiety of a public high school sophomore who was unable to perform well in mathematics but later overcame his fear of mathematics. In this study, he showed high levels of mathematics anxiety in the assessment tools that evaluate mathematical anxiety factors. Cognitive and behavior treatments were carried out to alleviate his anxiety. First, cognitive treatments that were implemented include: understanding his own problems, writing down his thoughts on a record sheet, and changing intermediate and core beliefs. This paper explored cognitive and affective changes and reactions during the treatment process. Second, behavioral treatments that were conducted include: the divided-page method and peer tutoring. The divided-page technique involves the test subject to write down and solve his problems on a note to see what kind of cognitive and affective changes occur during the process. This paper also explored how Su-chul, an overly competitive student, changed and reacted cognitively and affectively through peer tutoring. The results revealed that Su-chul's exam anxiety, as well as other factors, has decreased. Moreover, he regained his self-confidence by solving math problems that he had felt difficult. His competitive attitude also has turned into a cooperative and thoughtful one.
The purpose of this study is to develop a mathematics self-efficacy test tool for elementary school students based on the sub-factors of mathematical self-efficacy derived from current studies. In this study, I verified the validity and reliability of the test tool by statistically evaluating the results of applying the test tool to the 3rd-6th grade students. In this study, Principal Component Analysis was performed on the tool for measuring the self efficacy of mathematics for elementary school students. For the validity test, the mathematics anxiety status of the participants was measured. The mathematics anxiety who were known to have a negative correlation with the mathematical self efficacy. The mathematics self efficacy tool developed in this study consists of 16 items with three subcategories: master experience, social persuasions, and emotional and physiological state. The mathematical self efficacy test tool developed in this study is expected to provide grounds for diagnosing the mathematics self-efficacy status of elementary school students and looking for ways to improve it.
Permutation and combination are the subjects that most teachers feel difficult to teach in Mathematics. This paper investigated evaluation items and factors of anxiety of students for permutation and combination, and further examined the way to lessen the factors of anxiety. Two high school students participated for over a year from December 2007 to February 2008. Also, two teachers joined for the analysis of evaluation items. We found that the ill-structured problems and word problems are the main factors to bring about the anxiety, whereas cooperative learning with high intelligent peers, practice to read word problems and write the process of problems solving are helpful in lessening the mathematical anxieties. Further we propose that the study of appropriate teaching and learning method for permutation and combination should be performed in the future.
This study systematically examined the influence of preservice teachers' self-efficacy and AI anxiety, on the intention to use AI programs 'knock-knock! mathematics expedition' in mathematics lessons based on a technology acceptance model. The research model was established with variables including self-efficacy, AI anxiety, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and intention of use from 254 pre-service teachers. The structural relationships and direct and indirect effects between these variables were examined through structural equation modeling. The results indicated that self-efficacy significantly affected perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and intention to use. In contrast, AI anxiety did not significantly influence perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness. Perceived ease of use significantly affected perceived usefulness and intention to use and perceived usefulness significantly affected intention to use. The findings offer insights and strategies for encouraging the use of 'knock-knock! mathematics expedition' by preservice teachers in mathematics lessons.
