  • Characteristics of radiation field in the steam generator(S/G) water chamber of a PWR were investigated and the anticipated effective dose rates to the worker in the S/G chamber were evaluated by Monte Carlo simulation. The results of crud analysis in the S/G of the Kori nuclear power plant unit 1 were adopted for the source term. The MCNP4A code was used with the MIRD type anthropomorphic sex-specific mathematical phantoms for the calculation of effective doses. The radiation field intensity is dominated by downward rays, from the U-tube region, having approximate cosine distribution with respect to the polar angle. The effective dose rates to adults of nominal body size and of small body size(The phantom for a 15 year-old person was applied for this purpose) appeared to be 36.22 and 37.06 $mSvh^{-1}$) respectively, which implies that the body size effect is negligible. Meanwhile, the equivalent dose rates at three representative positions corresponding to head, chest and lower abdomen of the phantom, calculated using the estimated exposure rates, the energy spectrum and the conversion coefficients given in ICRU47, were 118, 71 and 57 $mSvh^{-1}$, respectively. This implies that the deep dose equivalent or the effective dose obtained from the personal dosimeter reading would be the over-estimate the effective dose by about two times. This justifies, with possible under- or over- response of the dosimeters to radiation of slant incidence, necessity of very careful planning and interpretation for the dosimetry of workers exposed to a non-regular radiation field of high intensity.

  • In an accidental release of radioactive materials to the environment the contaminative influence of animal products due to the inhalation of air and the ingestion of soil of livestock, both of which are dealt with as minor contaminative pathways in most radioecological models but may not be neglected, was investigated with the improvement of the Korean dynamic food chain model DYNACON Although mathematical models for both contaminative pathways have been established for considering all animal products and incorporated into the model, investigation was limited to milk. As a result, it was found that both pathways are influential in the contamination of milk in the case of an accidental release during the non-grazing period of dairy cows. In the case of an accidental release during the non-grazing period, the inhalation of air was more influential than the ingestion of soil in the early days following an accidental release. While, it was the opposite with the lapse of time. If precipitation is encountered during an accidental release, contaminative influence due to the ingestion of soil was greater compared with the cases of no precipitation, in general, because of a stealer deposition of radionuclides onto the ground. Precipitation during an accidental release was a less influential factor in $^{131}I$ (elemental iodine) contamination compared with the $^{137}Cs\;and\;^{90}Sr$ contaminations. In the case of an accidental release during the grazing period of dairy cows, the contaminative influence due to the inhalation of air was negligible.

  • As spatial data resources become more abundant, the potential for conflict among them increases. Those conflicts can exist between two or many spatial datasets covering the same area and categories. Therefore, it becomes increasingly important to be able to effectively relate these spatial data sources with others then create new spatial datasets with matching geometry and topology. One extensive spatial dataset is US Census Bureau's TIGER file, which includes census tracts, block groups, and blocks. At present, however, census maps often carry information that conflicts with municipally-maintained detailed spatial information. Therefore, in order to fully utilize census maps and their valuable demographic and economic information, the locational information of the census maps must be reconciled with the more accurate municipally-maintained reference maps and imagery. This paper formulates a conceptual framework and two map models of map conflation to make geometrically and topologically consistent source maps according to the reference maps. The first model is based on the cell model of map in which a map is a cell complex consisting of 0-cells, 1-cells, and 2-cells. The second map model is based on a different set of primitive objects that remain homeomorphic even after map generalization. A new hierarchical based map conflation is also presented to be incorporated with physical, logical, and mathematical boundary and to reduce the complexity and computational load. Map conflation principles with iteration are formulated and census maps are used as a conflation example. They consist of attribute embedding, find meaning node, cartographic 0-cell match, cartographic 1-cell match, and map transformation.

  • This study was conducted to improve the insufficiency of fruit vegetable grafting system developed by National Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Rural Development Administration. When the rotary blade cut the stem of scions and rootstocks, the grafting failure at curved cutting surfaces happened. The cutting depth of a tomato seedling by a rotated cutter was calculated 0.11 mm even when the cutting arm length and the maximum stem diameter were 50 mm and 5 mm, respectively. Mathematical analysis and high-speed photography showed that there was no problem by cutting in straight the stem of scions and rootstocks. The compression test of seedling stems to design the optimal shape of gripper showed that stems were not completely restored when they were compressed above 0.8 mm and 0.6 mm in case of rootstocks and scion, respectively. This study found that the bending angle of stem of tomato seedlings at the grafting period was 10 degree on average. The optimal gripper finger was the edge finger type which could be precisely set center point by adjusting the distance between fingers. In addition, it was found that most of seedling could be grasped without damage when the finger-to-finger distances is set to 2.5 mm for scion and 3.0 mm for rootstocks and finger are coated by 1 mm-thick flexible material.

  • A model of substrate utilization witbin bacterial films has been developed and simulated for a better understanding of fixed film treatment processes. The model consists of two parts, a deep biofilm and a thin biofilm, which are classified based on substrate penetration into the biofilm. Substrate concentration and flux within a biofilm can be computed from the model. Three dimensionless parameters, ${\phi}_1$, ${\phi}_2$ and $\bar{S}_b$ were obtained during model construction, and the substrate concentration and flux can be expressed in terms of these parameters. It has been found that an. increase of ${\phi}_1$ or a decrease of ${\phi}_2$ results in an increase of treatment efficiencies. It has also been found that systems maintaining high efficiencies belong to a deep biofilm. Among the constants involved, the mass transfer coefficient is the only controllable term and it depends Largely on fluid velocity near the biofilm surface. Substrate removal efficiency may be increased with an increase of fluid velocity for a biofilm of fixed depth. However, film depth is decreased due to sloughing with increasing velocity, and the system reaches a new steady state. Because changes in film depth are not well defined quantitatively yet, the efficiency can not be clearly described at a new steady state.

  • Underwater gliders do not typically have separate propellers for forward motion. They generate propulsive forces based on the difference between their buoyancy and gravity. They can control the volume from the buoyancy engine to adjust the propulsive force. In addition, the attitude of the underwater glider is controlled by a rubberless motion controller. The motion controller can change the mass center and moment of inertia of the inner moving mass. Owing to the change in these parameters, the attitude of the underwater glider is changed. In this study, we derive nonlinear, six degree of freedom (DOF) mathematical models for the motion controller and buoyancy engine. Using these equations, we perform dynamic simulations of the proposed underwater glider, and verify the suitability of the design and dynamic performances of the proposed underwater glider. We then perform the motion control simulation for the pitch and roll angle, and analyze the dynamic performance according to the pitch and roll angles.

  • Experiments and simulation were done to study the impact of contrast agent when CT scan was used to attenuation correction for PET Images in PET/CT system. Whole body phantom was imaged with various concentration of iodine-based contrast agent using CT. Mathematical emission and transmission density map with liver were made to simulate for whole body FDG Imaging. A variety of factors were estimated, including non-uniform enhancement of contrast agent, concentration and distribution size of contrast agent, noise level, image resolution, reconstruction algorithm, hypo-attenuation of contrast agent, and different time phases for contrast agent. Experimental studies showed that Hounsfield unit depends on the concentration of contrast agent and tube voltage. From the simulation data, contrast agents Introduced artifacts and degraded image quality on the attenuation-corrected PET images. The severity of these effects depends on a variety of factors, including the concentration and distribution size of contrast agent, the noise levels, and the Image resolution. These results Indicated that the impact of contrast agents should be considered with a full understanding of their potential problems in clinical PET/CT images.
