Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of providing information on Stress and maternal role confidence of pregnant women with preterm labor. Methods: The sample were 66 pregnant women with preterm labor admitted at 1 hospital in Busan. In the subjects, 33 were the experimental group and 33 were the control. Data was collected from March 1st to October 31st, 2007. A hand-out including the knowledge of preterm labor, fetus state and curing process. The tool for the stress had 14 questionnaires including the levels of anxiety and depress. And the tool for the maternal role confidence had 23 questionnaires. The data analyzed by $X^2$-test, t-test and pearson correlation coefficient with SPSS 12.0/pc program. Results: After providing information, the stress of the experimental group decreased significantly than the control(t=1.95, p=.048). And the maternal role confidence of the experimental group increased significantly than the control(t=-2.40, p=.016). There is a significant correlation between the stress and maternal role confidence(p<.01). Conclusion: The special program or educational nursing intervention should be created for each pregnant women with preterm labor and ante-natal nursing service may assessed and consulted on anxiety-depression and maternal role confidence.
Purpose: This study was done to analyze the effectiveness of simulation-based integrated practice program (maternal-child) on nursing knowledge, self-confidence, and clinical competence of nursing students. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pre-post experimental design was used to compare experimental and control group. The experimental group received the integrated simulation practice and the control group received a separate simulation for maternal care and for newborn care. Results: The experimental group who had the integrated simulation had significantly higher scores for self-efficacy on nursing handover (F=0.480 p=.012) and oxygen therapy in newborn care (F=3.262 p=.037), and for clinical competence (F=2.639, p<.001) and personal satisfaction with debriefing compared to the control group (F=2.179, p=.044). But the experimental group did not have significantly higher scores in nursing knowledge. Conclusions The results indicate that an integrated simulation practice is an effective practice method to improve self-confidence, clinical competence and satisfaction. Also this study had significance in providing a setting similar to the clinical situation.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate parenting attitudes and to identify factors influencing this parenting attitude in mothers of children with hemophilia. Method: The participants in this study were 119 mothers of children with hemophilia (under 18 years of age) who were registered members of the Korea Hemophilia Foundation. Data were collected using the Mother-Infant Attachment Scale, Maternal Guilt Scale and Parenting Attitude Scale. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS program. Results: The parenting attitude was 3.02 (total possible score=4). By subcategories, achievement attitude was the highest (3.45). Of the factors influencing parenting attitudes, mother-child attachment, maternal guilt and self-esteem account for 45.6% of the variance. Conclusion: The findings of this study show that attitudes of parents of children with hemophilia were positive. As mother-child attachment and maternal guilt were identified as major factors in predicting parenting attitudes, there is a need to consider interventions that will increase mother-child attachment and decrease maternal guilt.
Purpose: This study analyzes the effects of smoking behaviors of women of reproductive ages in terms of maternal conditions and conditions arising during the perinatal period in Korea. Methods: We used the National Health Insurance Corporation's medical panel data. Subjects included 382 individuals suffering from maternal conditions and conditions arising during the perinatal period from 2013 to 2014. A t-test was used to analyze the individual differences between maternal conditions and conditions arising during the perinatal period-A hierarchical regression analysis was performed in two steps to measure the effects of smoking behaviors on diseases. Results: The amount and duration of smoking are significant factors causing maternal conditions and conditions arising during the perinatal period. In the regression analysis, the explanatory power of model was significantly increased by adding smoking behavior to the maternal conditions and conditions arising during the perinatal period. Smoking behavior during pregnancy displayed a significant influence on diseases. Conclusion: Results of this study showed that the effects of smoking behavior on maternal conditions and conditions arising during the perinatal period were significant. Therefore it is necessary to develop a smoking cessation education program for pregnant women in Korea.
In September 1974, a survey was conducted towards 900 women respondents, each representing a household, residing in 18 selected Myuns(townships) of 18 Guns(counties) in Kyunggi-Do. Fifty households were selected randomly in each Myun and the sample Myuns were also randomly selected from the 18 Guns home-visiting interviews were carried out by Myun level maternal and child health workers with questionnair forms designed to measure the maternal and child health status at each household. Major findings obtained from this survey can be summarized as follows: 1. Of the women responents who were investigated in this survey, 13.1% of them were comprised in the illiterates, indicating no difference in literacy rate from that in most urban areas. 2. Most(93.8%) of the respondents were found to have married at ages of 20-24 years old. 3. Most(85.8%) of the respondents were found to have delivered their first babies at ages of 20-24, while only 13.4% had their first babies at 25-29. 4. About 22% of the respondents had 2 children, while 19% and another 19% had 2 and 4 children, respectively. 5. A great majority of the respondents (78%) experienced not a single death of a child within the family, while about 17% experienced death of one child. 0.7% of the women experienced deaths of 4 or more children. 6. 18% and 17% of the women experienced 4 and 3 pregnancies, respectively, and 12% of them experienced 7 or more pregnancies. 7. About 29% of the women experienced an induced abortion at least once. Nearly 2% of them were found to have experience of 4 or more induced abortions. 8. One half (51%) of the women were found to have received prenatal guidances in the latest pregnancies by (Ub(town) and Myun (township) level maternal and child health workers at least once or more times. 9. 52% women received professional prenatal care in the latest pregnancies: 24% at hospitals or clinics and 20% at health centers. 10. Most (89%) of the last-born children were delivered at home, while only 8.7% were delivered at hospital or clinics. 11. Materials used at delivery comprise vinyl (40%), cement bags (32%) ana gauzed or absorbent cottons (19%). 12. The largest preportion of the attendants at delivery comprises mothers in-law (48). Only 24% were found to be attended by either doctors, midwives or maternal and child health workers. 13. In most (90%) of the deliveries scissors were used to cut the umbilicus. But most (7%) of them used unsterilized scissors, 6 while only 20% of them used sterilized ones. 14. About 68% of the last-born babies were breast-fed for 12 months or more. Those who weaned during 6-12 months were 21%. 15. During 12 months after birth, 65% of the last-born babies were breast-fed, while 24% were given a combination of breast milk and cooked rice. 16. About nine out of the 10 births were found to be registered. 17. 71% of babies received BCG vaccination, while 79% and 56% received samllpox and DPT vaccinations, respectively within a year after birth. Those who were vaccinated against poliomyelitis were about 50%. 18. About 87% of the respondents recogninized the existence of government-sponsored maternal and child health guidance program.
The impact of childhood experience has lifelong significance on subsequent health and development. Especially, the experience of infant is mostly affected by the quality of parental care and rearing environment. But the new mothers usually do not know what to do because of the lack of experience in these days. Therefore, an educational program regarding maternal role would be necessary. This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the maternal role education program for mother-infant interaction, child-rearing environment, and infant development. Non-equivalent control group time-series design was used, and Barnard's mother-infant interaction model was used as a conceptual framework of this study. The subjects were the healthy infants weighing over 2,500gm at birth, whose gestational age was more than 37 weeks, and their mothers. The final sample consisted of 19 mother-infant dyads for intervention group and 18 dyads for control group. Data were collected from March 15th to September 3rd in 1999. For the intervention group, programmed education which focused on mother-infant interaction, breast feeding, and infant care was provided before discharge. Telephone counselling was provided within one week after discharge. Home visiting for maternal role education was provided twice, one month and three months postpartum. For the control group, home visiting was also conducted but only for data collection. The data were analyzed using chi-square test and t-test to test the equivalence of two groups, and the effectiveness of intervention program was determined with repeated measure ANCOVA and t-test. The results were as follows: 1. Significant differences were found in mother-infant interaction between two groups(p=.000). It indicates that intervention program was effective in improving mother- infant interaction. In subscale analysis, four out of six subscale showed significant differences between the groups: sensitivity to cues (p=.000), social-emotional growth fostering (p=.000), cognitive growth fostering(p=.000) in mothers, and responsiveness to caregiver (p=.019) in infants. 2. The difference in the mean score of childrearing environment (HOME) between the intervention group and control group was significant(p=.003). When each subscale of HOME was examined individually, intervention group showed significantly higher scores in the diversity of stimulation(p=.000), and mother's involvement(p=.001). 3. Three-month-Infants of the intervention group showed higher GQ in the Griffiths mental development scale(p=.026). In subscale analysis, significant differences were found in the personal-social(p=.005), and the hearing and speech(p=.003). In conclusion, the maternal role education program proved to be effective in promoting the mother-infant interaction, organizing the childrearing environment, and fostering the infant development. These results are very meaningful that we found maternal role education necessary for normal infants' mothers, and that nurses can make a great contribution in promoting health of infants and mothers.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the level of perceived self-esteem and maternal caretaking behaviors of college students. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires in which maternal caretaking behaviors and self-esteem were included. This study chose 293 students studying at universities and a college in Busan and a college in Taebaek as subjects. The data were analyzed by the SPSS program. The results were as follows ; 1. The mean score of the subjects on self-esteem was 29.6(Range=10-40). 2. The mean score of the subjects on maternal caretaking behaviors was 82.7(Range=22-110). The mean scores of subsets on the maternal caretaking behaviors were as follows ; achievement(4.03), affection(3.86), rational direction(3.79), active participation (3.60), consistent restriction(3.59), authoritative control(3.49) and over-protection(3.28). 3. The level of maternal caretaking behavior revealed some difference according to the students' gender and their mothers' academic career. 4. The level of self-esteem was positively correlated to the level of maternal caretaking behaviors in subjects. In conclusion, the above findings indicate that mothers' positive pattern of maternal caretaking behaviors are closely related to the students' higher self-esteem.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to demonstrate a two-year global health project to improve maternal and child health (MCH) in Ethiopia. Methods: This is a descriptive case study. The target area is Kilte Awlaelo Woreda in Tigray Regional State, Ethiopia. A baseline survey was conducted to identify the needs of community residents and health care professionals. A MCH program was developed according to a project design matrix that included: infrastructure renovation of health centers; continuing education for midwives, nurses, and health extension workers (HEWs); and improvement of residents' MCH awareness. Project evaluation will examine the structure, process, and outcomes of the program. Results: The baseline survey showed low rates of family planning (31%) and antenatal and postnatal care use (36.1% and 69%, respectively). The institutional birth rate was 13.5%. Midwives and nurses received 2~4 educational programs about family planning and perinatal care. HEWs were also given practical education. Water and electrical infrastructure of all five health centers in the Kilte Awlaelo Woreda were renovated. Additionally, medical supplies and equipment were provided. Community health education on perinatal care, family planning, and personal hygiene was presented. Conclusion: This study highlights the role of nursing in global health and provides basic information on the development and outcomes of the global health project.
Purpose: The purposes of this study are: to evaluate the effectiveness of organizations engaged in MCH programs; and to suggest the executive organizational system of maternal and child health (MCH) services linked to HP services at public health centers. Method: This study analyzes data on the present conditions and evaluates the organizational effectiveness of MCH workers at public health centers nationwide. The organizational effectiveness of MCH organization is assessed by MCH workers. Finally, this study seeks to obtain consensus among experts in the field of MCH. Result: The results are as follows. Of public health centers, 61.9% have a MCH organization for their MCH programs. For the other 38.2%, MCH services are undertaken by HP organization. Executive organizational systems for MCH services at leading MCH health centers are classified into three types: Type I (provides MCH and HP services through MCH organizations); Type II (provides MCH and HP Services through HP organizations) ; and Type III (provides MCH services through MCH organizations and HP services through HP organizations). The evaluation of the organizational effectiveness of MCH organizations shows that Type II is the most effective in terms of teamwork, autonomy, service quality and resource utilization. Conclusion: This study suggests that executive organizations for MCH and HP services for women and children should be established in accordance with lifetime health programs in order for public health centers to utilize the limited MCH and HP resources efficiently.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of music therapy on postpartum stress and maternal attachment of puerperal women. Methods: The participants were puerperal women who agreed to participate in this study and through a convenience sampling, 84 puerperal women were recruited (40 in the experimental group, 44 in the control group). After measuring postpartum stress and maternal attachment, music therapy was provided to the experimental group over 60min, three times a week, and for 2 weeks. Then, postpartum stress and maternal attachment for the experimental and control group were measured again before discharge. The data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 14.0 program. Results: The first hypothesis that "the degree of postpartum stress for the experimental group who participated in music therapy would be lower than that of the control group" was accepted. The second hypothesis that "the degree of maternal attachment the experimental group who participated in music therapy would be higher than that of the control group" was accepted. Conclusion: These findings indicate that music therapy has positive influences on decreasing postpartum stress and increasing maternal attachment of puerperal women.
