  • In this study we first explain details of the semiconductor manufacturing processes and cluster tools. Then we discuss the problems in current fab layout and cluster tool architecture. As a solution to these problems, we propose the ILE (In-Line EFEM) architecture in which wafer movements are conducted through interconnected EFEMs (Equipment Front End Modules) instead of AMHS (Automated Material Handling System). Then we model the pilot ILE system using discrete event simulation and analyze the cycle time. Finally we compare three different scenarios of equipment layout in the ILE system in terms of cycle time.

  • The purpose of this research is to develop a method for part-machine grouping subject to production and management constraints. In the proposed integer programming model, minimization of operating and material-handling costs are considered as an objective function. The model allows one to recognize the existing parts and machines into disaggregated cells. New constraints are introduced in the model to resolve unbalancing capacity and bottleneck problems. It is found that this approach could have a better flexibility on cell size design for mote alternatives than conventional methods. Experimental grouping and comparison studies with ROC algorithm are given for evaluation purposes.

  • Transparent and hard materials such as sapphire are used for many industrial applications as optical windows, hard materials on mechanical contact against abrasion, and substrate materials for opto-electronic semiconductor devices such as blue LED and blue LD etc. The materials should be cut along the proper shapes possible to be used for each application. In case of blue LED, the blue LED wafer should be cut to thousands of blue LED pieces at the final stage of the manufacturing process. The process of cutting the wafer is usually divided into two steps. The wafer is scribed along the proper shapes in the first step. It is inserted between transparent flexible sheets for easy handling. And then, it is broken and split in the next step. Harder materials such as diamonds are usually used to scribe the wafer, while it has a problem of low depth of scribing and abrasion of the harder material itself. The low depth of scribing can induce failure in breaking the wafer along the scribed line. It was also known that the expensive diamond tip should be replaced frequently for the abrasion. (omitted)

  • For the robot manipulator in performing precision task, it is indispensable that the robot utilize the various sensors for intelligence. This paper presents the development and implementation of an integrated control system for the control of robotic manipulator, a feeder, a conveyor belt system, force/torque sensor system, and a photo sensor system. Micro controller board was constructed for hierarchical control of the system. To set up the program interactively, a user can make use of the software which includes the full-down menu and a dialog box. The user can make progress the program quickly and easily by a mouse. The related software was written in C and assembly languages.

  • One of the most important and powerful tools available for design and/or study of the operation of complex systems and processes is simulation. Since automated material handling systems like AS/RS are often quite complex, a network-based simulation model is developed to analyze an automobile part supplier's automated storage and retrieval system(AS/RS). The network simulation model is implemented in the SLAM Ⅱ on a VAX 8800 computer. Performance of the AS/RS was tested for 3 dispatching rules, 3 work load levels, 2 storage policies, 3 levels of stacker crane break-down, and 2 conveyor system layouts. Results indicate that the AS/RS performance is primarily affected by the dispatching rule and work load level.

  • Static electricity in electronics manufacturing plants causes the economic loss, yet it is one of the least understood and least recognized effects haunting the industry today. Today's challenge in semiconductor devices is to achieve greater functional density pattern and to miniaturize electronic systems of being more fragile by electrostatic discharges(ESD) phenomena. As the use of automatic handling equipment for static-sensitive semiconductor components is rapidly increased, most manufacturers need to be more alert to the problem of ESD. One of the most common causes of electrostatic damage is the direct transfer of electrostatic charge from the human body or a charged material to the static-sensitive devices. To evaluate the ESD hazards by charged human body and devices, in this paper, characteristics of electrostatic attenuation in domestic semiconductor devices is investigated and the voltage to cause electronic component failures is investigated by field-induced charged device model(FCDM) tester. The FCDM simulator provides a fast and inexpensive test that faithfully represents ESD hazards in plants. Also the results obtained in this paper can be used for the prevention of semiconductor failure from ESD hazards.

  • The nanoscale sensing and manipulation have become a challenging issue in micro/nano-robotic applications. In particular, a feedback sensor-based manipulation is necessary for realizing an efficient and reliable handling of particles under uncertain environment in a micro/nano scale. This paper presents a piezoresistive MEMS cantilever for nanoscale force measurement in micro robotics. A piezoresistive MEMS cantilever enables sensing of gripping and contact forces in nanonewton resolution by measuring changes in the stress-induced electrical resistances. The calibration of a piezoresistive MEMS cantilever is experimentally carried out. In addition, as part of the work on nanomanipulation with a piezoresistive MEMS cantilever, the analysis on the interaction forces between a tip and a material, and the associated manipulation strategies are investigated. Experiments and simulations show that a piezoresistive MEMS cantilever integrated into a micro robotic system can be effectively used in nanoscale force measurements and a sensor-based manipulation.

  • Recently, the design problem of heat insulation have been reappraised in the aspect of energy saving due to the rising trend of energy cost. For example, that design problem is increasingly requsted in the fields of accommodation air conditioning systems, hot water supply systems, cargo handling systems, district heating or cooling systems. The rational design of heat insulation of piping systems can not only improve the overall efficiency of energy transfer but also give energy saving. In this paper, the heat insulation problem of district heating systems is therefore modeled as the multi-stage decision processes, suitable for dynamic programming technique. And take the object function as the sum of heat insulation material cost involved construction cost and heat loss cost, and propose the design method to minimize the object function for overall piping systems by dynamic programing. Effectiveness of design method presented here is proved by a computer simulation.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate risk factors and ergonomically improve the manufacturing lines of compressors for prevention of work-related musculoskeletal disorders, enhancement of productivity, and workers satisfaction We executed questionnaire survey, ergonomic risk factors investigation of manufacturing lines and ergonomic intervention of work methods, workplace and hand tools. The results of the questionnaire showed that $7.9\%$ of respondents were positive in WMSDs symptom survey. In ergonomic evaluation, the analysis methods such as RULA and NIOSH lifting equation were used and 28 processes in the lines were evaluated to be potentially hazardous. We ergonomically improved the processes to reduce potential WMSDs hazards : manual material handling, carts, work tables, transport methods, working posture and hand tools.
