  • The effects of humidity on friction performance of automotive brake materials were studied using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. Three different friction materials based on a simple formulation were investigated by changing the solid lubricant graphite, MoS$_2$, and Sb$_2$S$_3$. Friction materials without solid lubricants were also examined to study the effect of other ingredients in the matrix on humidity. The friction material containing graphite was strongly affected by the humidity showing lower friction coefficient at high humidity level than other conditions. On the other hand, the friction material containing MoS$_2$exhibited higher friction coefficient at initial stage under high humidity level. The friction material without solid lubricant or with Sb$_2$S$_3$ was not affected by humidity conditions. However, the friction material containing barite showed strong speed dependence.

  • The wear characteristics in supre-A dental material have been investigated. The wear tests were performed by using pin-on-disk wear tester at room temperature. Vickers hardness and fracture toughness measurement of dental materials were preformed. Microscopic observations on worn surfaces of specimens were conducted by SEM. The friction coefficient of supper-A material was investigated according to weight and slinging velocity. The hardness of supper-A material was a half of the enamel of natural teeth.

  • Friction and wear test for two kinds of Cu-based sintered metallic friction material against cast iron disk was carried out by plate-on-disk type friction and wear tester to investigate the friction and wear characteristics of brake system in severe condition. In this experimental study, the counter specimen was cast iron which is being used generally in brakes of heavy duty equipments. Test friction materials were A type which was manufactured by foreign company and B type by domestic company. Friction coefficient and wear volume were measured and compared with each other. The experiment was performed under room temperature. The worn surface of cast iron disk and friction material were observed by scanning electron microscope. The temperature of surface of disk was measured continuously by the non-contacting thermometer. It was found that A type friction material had stable friction coefficient over the wide range of sliding condition, but B type friction material had unstable friction coefficient and lower value of 0.2 under the severe sliding condition.

  • The wetting property and reflectivity of Sn-3.5Ag solder which was dip coated on a LED lead frame were investigated. The wettability of molten solder on Cu substrate was evaluated by the wetting balance tester, and surface tension was calculated from maximum withdrawal force and withdrawal time. Temperature of the molten solder in a bath was varied in the range of $250-290^{\circ}C$. With increasing temperature, the surface tension decreased a little. The reflectivity of Sn-3.5Ag coated on a substrate became a little lower than the highest current LED lead frame reflectivity.

  • In this paper hardened SCM440 material and annealed SCM440 material are for cutting experiments by the cutting con-dition which is chosen respectively by tool three components of cutting force are recorded using multicorder, Then the surface roughness for various force are measured by Roughness Tester. The results of the experiment are summarized as follow. The hardened material cut by ceramic tool(BX20) gives the highest radial component values among the cutting resistance radial components is increased higher for the higher cutting speed even though vertical component and axial component tend to decrease. But when the annealed material was cut increase in cutting speed results in the increase of three component forces. Since ceramic insert tip used the experiment hardly affect Built-up Edge and heat the cutting resistance decrease slightly regardless of the increased of cutting speed. The hardened material has higher three compo-nent force value than the annealed material because the material of high hardness is increased cutting resistance. The low-est cutting forces for hardened material and annealed material are shown in the cutting speed of 60m/min and 180m/min. respectively.

  • In the industrial chemical process involving combustible materials, reliable safety data are required for design prevention, protection and mitigation measures. The accurate combustion properties are necessary to safely treatment, transportation and handling of flammable substances. The combustion parameters necessary for process safety are lower flash point, upper flash point, fire point, lower explosion limit(LEL), upper explosion limit(UEL)and autoignition temperature(AIT) etc.. However, the combustion properties suggested in the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) are presented differently according to the literatures. In the chemical industries, tetralin which is widely used as a raw material of intermediate products, coating substances and rubber chemicals was selected. For safe handling of tetralin, the lower and flash point, the fire point, and the AIT were measured. The LEL and UEL of tetralin were calculated using the lower and upper flash point obtained in the experiment. The flash points of tetralin by using the Setaflash and Pensky-Martens closed-cup testers measured $70^{\circ}C$ and $76^{\circ}C$, respectively. The flash points of tetralin using the Tag and Cleveland open cup testers are measured $78^{\circ}C$ and $81^{\circ}C$, respectively. The AIT of the measured tetralin by the ASTM E659 apparatus was measured at $380^{\circ}C$. The LEL and UEL of tetralin measured by Setaflash closed-cup tester at $70^{\circ}C$ and $109^{\circ}C$ were calculated to be 1.02 vol% and 5.03 vol%, respectively. In this study, it was possible to predict the LEL and the UEL by using the lower and upper flash point of tetralin measured by Setasflash closed-cup tester. A new prediction method for the ignition delay time by the ignition temperature has been developed. It is possible to predict the ignition delay time at different ignition temperatures by the proposed model.

  • In this study, accelerated pavement tester(APT) was performed on long-life asphalt pavements that can save maintenance and user costs by increasing the design life twice longer than conventional asphalt pavements. Basic material testings are first conducted on a high modulus base(HMB) mixture developed in this study. Four different pavement sections including thin and thick conventional and thin and thick HMB courses are constructed to compare the load-carrying capacities and to investigate the fatigue and rutting performances using an accelerated pavement tester. Tensile strain values at the bottom of base courses under the various loading levels are measured. The tensile strain values of the HMB sections are lower than those of the conventional sections. It is observed from the APT performed on the thin pavement sections that no significant cracks are developed up to the 180,000 cycles of a wheel load. In terms of rutting, only 3mm of rutting is developed in the thick HMB section while 5.3mm of rutting is developed in the thick conventional section at the 90,000 cycles of the wheel load. The HMB material developed in this study can be successfully used in the long-life asphalt pavements because of its excellent fatigue and rutting performances. It is estimated from a series of structural analysis that the use of the HMB material instead of the conventional base materials may reduce the asphalt thickness at least 5cm because of its better load-carrying capacity.

  • Examined in this paper is the effect of B$_{4}$C addition on the frictional characteristics of Cu-Sn based sintered friction material. For the specimens 1%, 2% and 4% of B$_{4}$C were added into the reference material. A pin-on-disk type friction tester was used to measure the friction and wear with respect to the surface temperature and sliding distance. Wear mechanism of each specimen is analyzed in the view point of the oxide film formation. The specimen containing 4% of B$_{4}$C showed stable friction and low wear since the oxide film was sustained up to higher surface temperature ranges.

  • Recently, rotating elements which use mechanical and electrical systems have been utilized for high speed and accuracy to increase the performance. The most important thing to get a more reliable system is to understand the friction, wear and characteristics which has an effect on various coated surfaces. In this study, the tribologicali characteristics of various soft/hard materials were investigated by using a custom-built pin-on-reciprocator tester From the experimental results, it was found that the friction coefficients of the soft material coated surfaces were lower under various normal loads due to trier self-lubricating ability and material transfer to the counter surface.
